11.01.2022 I never thought I could lose sleep over a plant but I was wrong! The first year we moved to Beechworth, I pitched a tent in the vineyard and slept there overnight. My outer self was adamant that it was for my daughter and a bit of an adventure, but truth be told, it was sort of a way of bonding with my vines - as though being out there amongst them, in the middle of the night, would somehow grant me secret insight ... Ok so I got over that pretty quickly and have learnt loads about my own vineyard site since, but there are things that happen (mostly weather related) that never stops the worrying. Right now, we are at various stages of flowering and anything from excessive heat, to excessive cold, to wind or rain has me holding my breath hoping there is no disruption to the fertilisation process required to produce each and every berry. Pic 1 Shiraz Pic 2 Chardonnay Pic 3 Albariño Pic 4 Tempranillo Farmers may seem only to talk about the weather but it really is everything - it’s not just shooting the breeze, superficial chit chat - weather matters! Heck, we labelled our wine Weathercraft for this reason! But what’s this talk of Caps on, Caps off? Well Flower parts of a vine are contained inside a cap. These caps normally fall off at the start of flowering, revealing the reproductive parts of the flower. This year, being a ‘wetter’ year, rain is definitely a concern. Excessive rain can cause stuck caps, which prevent fertilisation and berries may fail to fully form (we call these aborted berries). Stuck caps can also harbour bunch rot diseases, with the most common bunch rot being botrytis. Grapevines are wind pollinated with hermaphroditic flowers meaning they contain both bothmale(androecium) andfemale (gynoecium) reproductive parts. Each part of the collective can be affected in different ways by weather. Here’s praying for a quick flowering period and then it’s countdown to harvest! #nearlyhome #viticultureaustralia #grapevine #vineyard #winegrowing #wine #aussiewine #gtwine #grapeandwine #wbmmagazine #instawine #winecountry #wineaustralia #vintage2021 #lovewhatyoudo #100daystoharvest #wineeducation

10.01.2022 As the days get longer and summer approaches, farm activity intensifies. Out on the vineyard though, life seems to slow a little. It’s certainly peaceful walking amongst the vines - you forget about emails and phone calls and you remember to just breathe. Hugh and I certainly never wanted to live an ‘if only’ and ‘when this happens I’ll do this’ kind of life. ... What we did though (pivoting from a professional life to a farming one) isn’t for everyone. It was our dream. Yours may be very different. As complex as our little business is, we love it though because we get to grow, make, market, sell and drink wine! We consciously chose our best life, and we get to experience it together... . Anyone else out there living or thinking of following their dream? #dreamitdoit . . . . . #everysquareastory #lifeunscripted #reclaimthehappy #seeksimplicity #flashesofdelight #cornersofmyworld #darlingdaily #nothingisordinary #positiveintentions #highvibetribe #spiritjunkie #youaremagic #youarepowerful #theuniversehasyourback #lawofattraction #manifestyourlife #positivelife #thinkhappythoughts #seekthesimplicity #thehappynow #myunicornlife #dream #love #happy #vineyard #wine #couple #passion #entrepreneur

06.01.2022 My heart gets squeezed each time I watch this video This is our daughter Mia, five years ago, at 4 years of age telling us how you make wine! I so love her enthusiasm and the way she rests her hand on her hip as she points animatedly at her drawings on the white board. This is what a child’s passion looks like. In many ways her enthusiasm reflects my own. With how tumultuous this year has been - the past month has seen us more manic than ever trying to meet deadlines, mana...ge the farm and sales, prepare for vintage, meet and greet visitors and still manage to cook, clean, wash all whilst trying to find time to relax. I felt that I needed something today. A bit of perspective perhaps. Looking through past photos and videos like this one makes me feel so grateful for all that we have and really proud of how much we have achieved in such a short period of time. With borders reopening and not a case of Covid reported in the past 28 days - the future definitely looks bright. Here’s hoping your Tuesday is going well also. #likemotherlikedaughter #myminime #teachthemyoung #familyiseverything #mytinytribe #thefamilynarrative #thepursuitofjoyproject #lovemyfam #workingmumlife #mumpreneur #choosejoy #livethelittlethings #makeyousmilestyle #thehappynow #nothingisordinary #winerylife #winepassion #wineenthusiast #wineeducator #winestagram #winelife #wineenthusiasts #wineinfluencer #wineexpert #wineeducation

05.01.2022 The word gazpacho comes from the Latin word ‘caspa’ meaning leftovers or a little something, and dates back to pre-Roman times. In Spain, depending on where you are, gazpacho can mean two very different dishes. There is an old shepherds’ stew made from game and served upon a crispy dough base that serves as a plate and is very different to the vegetable-based soup most people know of. This game stew is called Gazpachos Manchegos and is a winter dish from the Albacete ...mountains which separate La Mancha region from Extremadura region in eastern Spain. Today though, I’m showing you Classic Gazpacho from Andalusia (Gazpacho Andaluz) a cold vegetable soup that is served as a refreshment on hot summer days. There are MANY interpretations of this dish, but the original version - eaten by shepherds during pre-Roman times - was made from stale bread, garlic, vinegar, oil and water. Vegetables were later added for more sustenance and the soup was consumed in the fields to quench both thirst and hunger in the sweltering heat of the day. Classic "Gazpacho Andaluz" is still made using a base of bread, garlic, vinegar and oil with tomato, cucumber and usually a pale, long green pepper is used. "Salmorejo Cordobes" is a version made with just tomatoes, whilst "Ajo Blanco" is a version made from garlic, bread, vinegar, oil and blanched almonds and hails from Málaga. I’ve stuck to the classic for this recipe and I suggest serving it alongside bowls of finely chopped 'additions' for guests to garnish their pureed canvas as they please. I hope you enjoy this soup as much as I do!
