25.01.2022 I don’t think I would be as passionate about politics if it wasn’t for Kool Kids Lizzie has been connected to Weave's Kool Kids Program for 12 years. Through Kool Kids, young people like Lizzie engage in programs that highlight their strengths and provide opportunities to build leadership skills. Kool Kids provides long-term connection to positive relationships, and support for children and young people to learn, grow and develop together with their peers in their community.... For 20 years, Kool Kids has been building resilience from the ground up and we need your support to keep this life-changing program going strong for the next 20 years. Any contribution you can make gives children and young people opportunities to thrive. You can make a donation here https://events.weave.org.au/donate #20YearsofKoolKids #WeaveKoolKids #WeaveCommunity #YoungLeaders

25.01.2022 Through our Kool Kids Program, children and young people engage in fun, skills-based activities that highlight their strengths, improve social and emotional wellbeing, foster respect and nurture resilience. Activities include surfing, cultural programs, camps, photography and creative writing programs. For 20 years we have been fighting, advocating and doing everything we can to keep this program going. Sadly, 20 years on, Kool Kids still does not have sustainable funding, b...ut Weave’s commitment to keep doing this critical, life-changing work remains strong. We need your support. Your donation creates opportunities for children and young people to thrive. You can make a donation here https://events.weave.org.au/donate #WeaveKoolKids #20YearsofKoolKids #EOFY #WeaveCommunity

25.01.2022 Over the last week, we have been sharing portraits and stories of 6 men who are connected to Weave and who embody the values of our ‘Be The Change’ campaign. At Weave, we believe we all have a responsibility to create a society where domestic and family violence and abuse is never tolerated or accepted. We created our ‘Be The Change’ campaign to raise awareness of this domestic and family violence and educate and empower our communities to be involved, to be vocal, to be tru...e, to be supportive, to be non-judgemental and to be an advocate. We encourage you to reflect on which ‘Be The Change’ values resonate the most with you. How will you commit to being true, being supportive, being non-judgemental, being vocal, being involved and being an advocate? #BeTheChange #16DaysOfActivism #BeAnAdvocate

25.01.2022 Be The Change is a campaign that was created to address attitudes that place domestic and family violence and abuse as a private issue, when in fact, it is a public issue and we all have a responsibility to be a part of changing this. Our Domestic and Family Violence Program has had significant success in supporting women and children to create new lives for themselves, free from violence. Our two caseworkers on the program are Aboriginal and Maori women, who are frequently... asked to contribute as experts in the field to research and development. Our caseworkers bring insight and cultural knowledge that create connection and shared understanding of lived experience for Aboriginal and First Nations women. You can support our Domestic and Family Violence Program by making a donation here: https://events.weave.org.au/donate #BeTheChange #TeamWeave #WayUpWayForward #StrongConnectedCommunity

25.01.2022 Be Involved. Be Vocal. Shannon specialises in the installation of premium security cameras and security lighting for women and children who are experiencing domestic and family violence. Through Weave’s Domestic and Family Violence Program, we work with women to provide home security upgrades, that allow women and children to safely remain in their own homes. Shannon’s calm, compassionate and respectful nature creates a sense of ease for each client that we work with which i...s invaluable in these sensitive situations. Domestic violence is a big issue in society and since having the opportunity to work with Weave, I’ve realised it’s an even bigger issue than what I thought. It’s rewarding to be able to make a difference, big or small. Being supportive and being involved is important. It’s not a general topic that comes up between men, unfortunately. Men can advocate for positive change in this area by speaking out more openly and educating themselves and each other about this issue. - Shannon Portrait by Tristan Stefan Edouard #BeTheChange #16DaysofActivism #DomesticandFamilyViolence #BeAnAdvocate #BeSupportive #BeTrue #BeNonJudgemental #BeVocal #BeInvolved

25.01.2022 At Weave, we believe when people are supported, they are empowered to change their lives. Our range of programs provide support to people facing complex social issues, and create a way up and a way forward to children, young people, women and families in the communities we work with. Sadly, today, these programs are at risk. The multitude of challenges we have already been confronted with this year make it more difficult than ever to raise essential funds. You can support ou...r work at Weave by making a donation. https://events.weave.org.au/donate #StrongConnectedCommunity #WayUpWayForward

24.01.2022 An important Survival Tip from one of our Weavers, Giulia. Which #WeaveSurvivalTips are you taking into the weekend?

24.01.2022 Karlie is a Caseworker at Weave and has been part of the Weave community for a long time. She is from Yuin Country on the South Coast of NSW, and has painted since she was young as a way to connect to her saltwater home and her culture. Karlie has just set up an Instagram account to share her incredible artwork @Katungalart and says "Ive chosen Katungal as a name to represent my artwork - it translates loosely to sea people in Dhurga, the language of my old people and our Co...untry. Follow Karlies journey @katungalart #KatungalArt #WeaveDigitalThreads #Art #Artist #Yuin

24.01.2022 Were very proud of Karlie and Trei Stewart who share their stories to advocate for systemic change for Aboriginal people. Karlie is now a caseworker at Weave, working with young people, and Trei is a Weave Youth Advocate and Just Reinvest NSW Ambassador. Both Karlie and Trei have had a long standing connection to Weaves Kool Kids Program and know first hand the difference that tailored support and continuity of care can make. Early intervention programs like Kool Kids are... perfect examples of community embedded initiatives that build childrens skills, confidence and self esteem and give them access to opportunities that allow them to thrive. For less than the cost of locking up one young person, our Kool Kids Program supports 182 children and young people a year. The program is focused on building resilience from the ground up, through purpose-driven activities designed to improve social and emotional health and wellbeing. 20.01.2022 Our range of holistic programs at Weave are focused on providing wrap-around support for people facing complex social issues, strengthening communities and empowering people to change their lives. As we continue to support the #RaiseTheAge campaign, the need for investing in community programs such as Weaves Kool Kids Program and our Creating Futures Justice Program is clear. Kool Kids continues to provide early intervention support to children aged 7 - 13 through a range ...of activities and mentoring. The program is focused on improving social health and wellbeing, connection to culture and promoting strength and resilience. You can read a recent reflection about Kool Kids and the importance of raising the age, written by our Kool Kids worker, Drew, in the News and Events section of our website. Creating Futures was established in response to community needs and developed to address the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system. The program is designed to help and empower Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who have recently been released from prison, and give them every chance to create a positive future for themselves. You can listen to Daniel Daylight, Program Manager of our Creating Futures Program, speak about the importance of investing in community programs and raising the age of criminal responsibility on ABCs Late Night Live with Phillip Adam. https://www.abc.net.au//raising-the-age-of-crimin/12483652 #RaiseTheAge #WeaveKoolKids #WeaveCreatingFutures #InvestInCommunity #WayUpWayForward #StrongConnectedCommunities

18.01.2022 Domestic and family violence and abuse is still considered a private domain when it is a public issue. Weave’s ‘Be The Change’ campaign was created to raise awareness of this issue and educate and empower our communities to be involved, to be vocal, to be true, to be supportive, to be non-judgemental and to be an advocate. At Weave, we believe we all have a responsibility to create a society where domestic and family violence and abuse is never tolerated or accepted. This ...year we are shining light on good men doing good things to Be The Change in our communities. Our hope is that more men will feel empowered to be involved in conversations about this issue and to take action if someone in their life is experiencing domestic violence and abuse. Over the next week, during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we will be sharing portraits and stories of 6 men who are connected to Weave and who embody the values of our ‘Be The Change’ campaign. We are committed to continuing to advocate for systemic change and being part of breaking the cycle of violence. Join us, and Be The Change. #BeTheChange #DomesticandFamilyViolence #BeAnAdvocate #BeSupportive #BeTrue #BeNonJudgemental #BeVocal #BeInvolved

18.01.2022 Friday Flashback to the time our good mates from True Vibenation came and ran a Hip Hip Workshop with our Kool Kids. The first week of program the kids learnt about the history of hip hop, and the different elements of rapping, DJing, graffiti and b-boying that are all important parts of hip hop culture. Bheki and Vuli showed the kids different styles and mixes on the turntables and the kids learnt some DJ skills. They spent lots of time writing their own rap verses, with so ...much incredible creative storytelling talent in the room! The kids did an amazing job and by the end of the term had recorded their own songs! These programs are so important in providing spaces for our Kool Kids to develop new skills and confidence. Thanks True Vibenation for running this program and for being part of the Weave fam! #StrongConnectedCommunity #TrueVibenation #HipHop #WeaveKoolKids #Storytelling #Storytellers

Dr. Peggy Dwyer is the Chairperson of our Board at Weave and a Barrister with extensive experience of the criminal justice system. 15.01.2022 ‘Dubays’ by Karlie Stewart consists of acrylic linework and dots on canvas. 'Dubays' seeks to tell a story of the strength, resilience and beauty of Aboriginal women, who are the backbones of Aboriginal communities. In many Aboriginal cultures across the country, including the artists' own, women are often regarded as the most sacred aspect of Aboriginal peoples' being, as it is through women and mother earth that we are born and that we learn our initial ways of being and ou...r responsibilities to our families and our communities. The twinkling of stars in the upper section of the painting represents our old people who have passed before us, that have passed down their stories and wisdoms, ensuring that we continue to live our sacred ways of life, whilst the yarning circle in the foreground and the many symbols often regarded as those belonging to women in the middle section, represents the passing on of systems of knowledges around being Aboriginal women. The birthing caves at the bottom of the artwork are a reflection of the ongoing connection and relationship that Aboriginal women share with sacred Country, and the opportunity this gives us to continue birthing generations of strong, resilient and connected babies. Karlie is a Wandi Wandian Woman from Yuin Country on the South Coast of New South Wales. She lived in Nowra throughout her childhood and spent time around the Nowra, Wreck Bay and Jerrinja Aboriginal communities with her family. Since the age of 10, Karlie has lived on Bidjigal land and has strong connections to the La Perouse Aboriginal community. In early 2019, Karlie graduated with an Honours in Social Work from the University of New South Wales and has since worked as a Child, Youth and Family caseworker at Weave. She has been part of the Healing Foundation’s Interim Youth Advisory Group and is passionate about healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, particularly from intergenerational trauma as a result of historic and current government interventions. ‘Dubays’ is featured on our Women & Children’s Centre Tees, available to pre-order here: https://events.weave.org.au/shop #KatungalArt #WeaveCommunity

12.01.2022 At Weave, we are privileged to walk alongside so many people and be part of their journeys - journeys that make us proud and journeys that inspire us every day. This beautiful photograph by @tristan_edouard captures the bond of three young men - Trei, Beau & Kobie. Their Weave journeys started on our Kool Kids Program in La Perouse when they were 8 years old, and they went on to become Switch Leaders on our peer mentoring program, and then Youth Advocates and Ambassadors for ...campaigns advocating for change on important social issues impacting young people. Today, their individual journeys include developing creative youth-led projects that celebrate the voices and perspectives of young people, working as an Activity Worker on our Kool Kids Program, and writing, recording and performing music that tells powerful stories. Their collective journey remains focused on supporting each other and other young men and women in their community. 11.01.2022 Be Supportive. Be Vocal. Uncle Dean, Aboriginal Community Cultural Leader. I’ve supported Weave through cultural programs for a number of years now. I recently did a camp with 9 young men from Weave who asked to come and do this cultural stuff and now I’m a Board Member for Weave. I see Weave as a really good organisation who are doing good things in the community so I’ll keep on supporting them. ... We look a lot at self and what we need to do as an individual to become better people and one of our first lessons is about respecting women. If we can learn that stuff pretty early we can make a change and make a difference in what we do. Domestic violence is not a topic a lot of men talk about. It’s a closed door thing, a lot of it happens out of sight out of mind. I think one of the barriers for men and being able to make change, is for them to deal with their own emotions, to be able to talk and not feel as though they’re being weak because they show emotion. Even to shed a tear is a strength because it shows you that you’re showing those emotions. It’s about men speaking about this stuff, and looking at their experiences, what they’ve seen and what they’ve lived. Once you’ve lived something you tend to never forget it, and then that living research can help others. - Uncle Dean Portrait by Tristan Stefan Edouard #BeTheChange #DomesticandFamilyViolence #BeAnAdvocate #BeSupportive #BeTrue #BeNonJudgemental #BeVocal #BeInvolved

10.01.2022 The Aboriginal view of health is holistic and encompasses mental health, physical health, social and emotional wellbeing, cultural and spiritual health. Land and being on country are central to wellbeing. Addressing our clients cultural and spiritual needs benefits all of our programs and contributes to a healthier community. This is the focus of our Aboriginal Cultural Program. Understanding and connecting to culture is key to a strong identity. Without knowing who we are ...and where we come from, it is difficult to know where we are going and it can be easy to go off track. Recently our Aboriginal Cultural Program Worker took one of our Weave Advocates Kobie Dee back home to Gomeroi country up in Moree. These are some of the pictures from the journey. 09.01.2022 As Aboriginal people we face entrenched systemic disadvantage after years of devastating government policy and neglect as a community We provide the kind of wrap around support Aboriginal people transitioning from prison back to their families and communities need. - Daniel Daylight, Program Manager Creating Futures. Our Creating Futures Justice Program exists to address the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system and the impacts of systemi...c disadvantage and intergenerational trauma. A recent independent evaluation of the program highlights the significant impact Creating Futures is having, and reinforces the need for community-led, culturally safe, trauma informed programs. 08.01.2022 #RaiseTheAge Right now, children as young as 10 years old can be imprisoned in every state and territory in Australia, including NSW. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are disproportionately impacted by these laws, accounting for 70% of children aged 10 - 13 in detention. Today, Daniel Daylight, Program Manager of our Creating Futures Justice Program joined PIAC for a panel discussion about why children need to be supported to reach their full potential, and not... locked up. 08.01.2022 Be Vocal. Kuyan and his younger brother Luis, pictured at the Royal National Park. Kuyan is a Wiradjuri man, from Cowra NSW who works as a caseworker at Youth Justice in Sydney. ... ‘Be vocal’ resonates with me as it highlights the important role of men being vocal in our peer groups and wider communities and talking about domestic violence. It’s rare for it to come up as a topic of conversation, but an important part of raising awareness and creating change is feeling confident to speak to your mates about these issues. Talking to a perpetrator about behaviour you deem as wrong is always difficult, especially when it’s someone close to you, but we have to call it out. Throughout my life, it’s been important to understand what it means to be an Aboriginal man. A strong part of our culture is respect for mother earth and through that respect for women and mothers. The respect for mother earth is at the very core, and that respect passes on to the women we come in contact with in our lives, whether that’s our mum, our grandmothers or any women that we have any type of relationship with. Whether it’s someone we have a passing contact with or someone we have a close relationship with. In my life I’ve been privileged to have different men who have been mentors to me and invested in me and I’ve learnt alot from them. I think it’s important to recognise the role and responsibility we have in sharing with men around us, particularly young people. For me that’s through my work and through being a big brother. Our mum is a domestic violence caseworker and a strong advocate for women, and my little brother and I feel grateful that awareness of these issues and conversations about this has always been around us. - Kuyan Portrait by Tristan Stefan Edouard #BeTheChange #16DaysOfActivism #DomesticandFamilyViolence #BeAnAdvocate #BeSupportive #BeTrue #BeNonJudgemental #BeVocal #BeInvolved

We created the Weave Survival Tips campaign in 2014, as a space to open the conversations about what we do to get through hard times, to support each other and celebrate our ways of coping and surviving. Visit our #WeaveSurvivalTips hashtag to see more tips. We must continue to have these conversatio...ns and create these spaces. Join us, share your Survival Tips with us and ask the people in your lives what they do to get through tough times and share with each other. If you or someone you know is struggling please speak to someone. You are not alone. You can find out more information about Weaves programs on our website www.weave.org.au. 05.01.2022 Be Supportive, Be Non-Judgemental, Be Involved. Matt started a removalist company Moving Against Domestic Violence (Movers) in 2015 and has been supporting Weave clients experiencing domestic violence who have to move to a safer housing option. One phone call from a friend was all it took for Matt to open his eyes to the issues of domestic violence and the need for practical help. A friend called me and asked if I still had my transport business. I said no but I could hook... him up. He said not for him but for a friend of his who was in a domestic violence situation and needed to get out urgently. I dropped everything called a mate with a truck and got her out. It all started from there. Men don’t speak about these topics until they’re invited. Given the chance to have a voice, men will. I feel comfortable talking to men in my life about these issues. What we try and do at Movers is allow men to get involved in making a change. We talk about a safe escape, a sustainable escape. So a safe escape is get the families out, and a sustainable escape is starting to look at helping them stay out. Our Board is all men attempting to drive change how we can, in a practical way. - Matt Portrait by Tristan Stefan Edouard #BeTheChange #DomesticandFamilyViolence #BeAnAdvocate #BeSupportive #BeTrue #BeNonJudgemental #BeVocal #BeInvolved
