24.01.2022 This is something I've become very much aware of as we continue to fight for an Aged Care facility in Wedderburn. Our elderly are not "things" to be dispatched ...to the economic junk pile. We have a moral, ethical and social responsibility to provide quality and affordable care. Hopefully the Royal Commission will come up with practical solutions to the issues we currently face and simply increase with our ageing population. See more
23.01.2022 Today Wedderburn Lions Club Aged Care sub committee members Ric Raftis (Presenter), Jon Chandler, Jude Raftis and Lance Ward attended the IDHS Board of Managem...ent meeting to present our proposal for an Aged Care Facility for Wedderburn. The presentation was well received and Chairperson Vanessa Hicks said the Board will contact us in a couple of weeks with a view to assisting us on our journey. See more
22.01.2022 How good are the people of Wedderburn- we have to date raised $214550 in pledges for our Aged Care Project to date. We still have a long way to go but a huge THANKYOU to those in our community who dug deep to support us. If you would like to make a pledge contact Jude on 0428165389 or get your form in Scoop & Scuttlebutt!
22.01.2022 It appears the Nationals have pledged 2.5million towards the sports complex at Donaldson Park. It would be great if they could do the same for an Aged Care Facility which the majority of the town supports!
21.01.2022 Not for profit aged care providers are confident the national conversation created by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety will help achieve r...eal outcomes in the next term of Parliament, regardless of who forms government. But the political parties cant use the Royal Commission as an excuse to delay urgent reform. There are practical solutions we can act on now to give older Australians better support and address sustainability issues confronting providers in delivering care. ACSA is asking all political parties to commit to Five Urgent Priorities for Aged Care - https://bit.ly/2PCKLwA. #ACSAElectioncampaign2019 #agedcare #5urgentpriorities #notforprofit
21.01.2022 With Council elections fast approaching it would be interesting to hear what the two candidates intend on doing to help Wedderburn Lions Club get an Aged Care Hostel for the community.
21.01.2022 Last night at the Wedderburn Lions Club Dinner Meeting LionRic Raftis have an excellent presentation of his and Judes recent visit to the Grace Munro Aged Care Centre in Bundarra NSW. This is an 11 bed facility run by the community and making a profit every year since 2009. Take a look at this short video for more information on this amazing facility.
21.01.2022 Jacque and Gary Roberts have very generously donated some of their fabulous garden art to raffle with proceeds to go to the Lions Aged Care Project. Wedderburn Lions thank them very much and when we are able to have raffles again we will be out and about selling tickets!
20.01.2022 On Sunday at 12.30pm, Landline on the ABC will be doing a story on how the community of Kilkivan, near Gympie in Queensland, are going about getting a community Aged Care Facility. Kilkivan is about the same size as Wedderburn, so there will be similarities in our objectives. We will post a link to the IView version next week. https://www.abc.net.au/landline/
20.01.2022 We have arrived in Bundarra to have a look at their Aged Care centre. Hopefully we will get some good ideas to help Wedderburn. The country is terribly dry. It ...looks like the end of our summer and its only September. Rain is desperately needed. The River Gwydir, where we are camped is not flowing and only has a few pools. Which reminds me that old Snaffy Andrews used to recite the poem, The Spider by the Gwydir. So here it is. By the sluggish river Gwydir lived a hungry red-backed spider, Who was just about as wicked as could be; An the place that he was camped in was an empty Joness jam tin In a paddock near the showgrounds, at Moree. Near him lay a shearer snoozin, he had been on beer an boozin All through the night and all the previous day; An the rookin of the rookers an the noise of showground spruikers Failed to wake him from the trance in which he lay. Then a crafty-lookin spieler with a dainty little Sheila Came along, collectin wood to make a fire. Said the spieler, "Hes a boozer, an hes goin to be a loser; If he isnt you can christen me a liar." "Hustle round and keep nit, honey, while I fan the mug for money And well have some dainty luxuries for tea." But she answered, "Dont be silly; you go back and boil the billy, You can safely leave the mug to little me." So she circled ever nearer till she reached the dopey shearer With his pockets bulgin, fast asleep and snug; But she didnt see the spider that was ringin close beside her For her mind was on the money an the mug. The spider sighted dinner. Hed been daily growin thinner; Hed been fastin an was hollow as an urn. As she eyed the bulgin pocket, he just darted like a rocket An bit the spielers Sheila on the stern. Then the Sheila started squealin an her clothes she was unpeelin, To hear her yells would make you feel forlorn. One hand the bite was pressin while the other was undressin An she reached the camp the same as she was born. Then the shearer, pale an haggard, woke, an back to town he staggered Where he caught the train an gave the booze a rest; An hell never know the spider that was camped beside the Gwydir Had saved him sixty smackers of the best. 19.01.2022 Aged & Community Services Australia has responded to recommendations made by the Royal Commissions special counsel earlier today. ACSA CEO Patricia Sparrow sa...id, ACSA understands the Royal Commission is looking to the long-term future of aged care and knows this will require major structural and funding reform. On the issue of todays comments at the Commission, we believe greater transparency is important, but even more important is having enough staff to begin with. To raise the standard so that all residents receive at least a 4-star level, which the special counsel suggested, will mean an overall increase of 37.2% in total care staffing. What we know now is that aged care simply isnt funded to provide the level of care people expect and deserve. A new direction like this could be exactly what we need to force a rethink and set up Australia for our ageing population and the decades to come, she said. 18.01.2022 This week is Dementia Week 2019 and Australians are called to change how we respond and behave around people living with dementia. With 70 per cent of the 447,0...00 Australians with dementia living in the community, we can choose how to interact with individuals who are living with this chronic condition. Assumptions might be made about a persons capacity to contribute to conversations, decision-making, whether they can still drive, cook or even continue to work. Friends and family might stop calling or inviting a person living with dementia to social occasions not out of deliberate neglect but possibly out of not knowing how to include them.", Dementia Australia CEO McCabe said. Lets help to better understand how discrimination occurs and what it would take to shift that behavior. You can learn more, attend an event near you, or complete a short survey here > https://bit.ly/2m1ahR7 #dementiadoesntdiscriminate #dementia
18.01.2022 Maggie Beer wants to get better food into aged care homes.
17.01.2022 As the spread of COVID-19 continues and residential aged care facilities apply visiting restrictions, it is important to remember why. This is to limit opportun...ities for possible exposure, to protect the elderly who are most at risk. The Government has limited visits within residential aged care facilities to a maximum of two visitors at one time per day. Some providers are implementing their own measures based on their capacity to safely administer and monitor physical distanced visits. Remember that these measures are solely to protect those who are vulnerable. Please respect and appreciate those who are enforcing these restrictions to keep your loved ones safe. http://ow.ly/luk150yUSCw #agedcare #residentialcare #coronavirus
17.01.2022 The Wedderburn Lions Club would like to thank Doug ODwyer for his very generous donation of $1000 towards the Aged Care Fund.

The research paper, written by the Australian Health Services Research Institute at the University of Wollongong, looked into the staffing levels of the Australian sector compared with international standards. 14.01.2022 This is a recording of the video Powerpoint Presentation given to the Lions Club regarding the operation of a small 11 bed facility in Bundarra, Northern NSW. It was established in 2009 and has made a profit every year since. https://youtu.be/1U2SE6Tc1nA
13.01.2022 Would you live in a nursing home if you got free rent? Hannah is living every university students dream - her rent is a grand total of $0. But the perk is comp...licated, and her neighbours are often 60 years her senior. "I live in a nursing home, which is pretty cool," the Toowoomba-born physiotherapy student said. The 25-year-olds living situation is thanks in part of the Gold Soul Companionship Program based at Scalabrini Bexley, a nursing home in Sydneys south. The intergenerational living program began in 2018 in an effort by the nursing home to improve the isolation and depression faced by many ageing Australians. "People in aged care can suffer from depression, and the engagement that the students have with the residents - Ive seen a change in some of them," said Tracey Gill, who is in charge of wellbeing at the facility. 13.01.2022 For people who may have missed the story on Landline about the need for Aged Care facilities in small communities, here is the link. There are many similarities that these towns have with Wedderburn. The ABC story articulates extremely well the need for local Aged Care. https://www.abc.net.au//aging-in-the-bush:-aged-/12470072
13.01.2022 What Does Aged Care & The NBN Have To Do With Each Other? You wouldn’t think that the Aged, who often have trouble coming to grips with new technology, would have a great interest in the Fibre to the Curb technology of the NBN. Yet this is very much the case in Wedderburn for the month of December. Wedderburn is about to get the next generation of NBN for our town area with the commencement of the Fibre to the Curb network. Those on other systems and the old ADSL will have ...the opportunity to see a huge increase in their speed and capacity. The best part about this is that Telstra, who will be in town on the corner of High St and Peters St, (where the library van used to park), are partnering with the Wedderburn Lions Club. For every new NBN connection signed up during the month of December, Telstra will donate $25 to the Wedderburn Lions Care Aged Care Fund. The Wedderburn Lions Club are very grateful for Telstra’s generous offer to our community and would encourage everyone in town who may use this service to visit the Telstra van on the 4th and 11th December. It’s a win/win when signing up to the NBN can provide a benefit to your community.
12.01.2022 Have you read the latest edition of Scoop & Scuttlebutt? Telstra are generously donating $25 for each NBN connection in Wedderburn . They will be in Wedderburn on Dec 4 and 11 at the corner of High and Peter Streets where the mobile library usually parks, so call in and get all the information you will need and remember by signing up you will be helping Wedderburn Lions at the same time! THANKYOU TELSTRA!

11.01.2022 Shocking #Estimates revelations today - over 30,000 older Australians have died in the last two years, while waiting for home care funding. But the Government can spend $1 million a day on advertising?
11.01.2022 What would happen if you built a school on the grounds of an aged care facility?

05.01.2022 The problem in the aged care sector is its become a cosy relationship between the industry & government- Some say the aged care industry wrote the aged care act and that produces the problem. Paul Versteege says aged care in Australia is a disaster and needs to be overhauled
05.01.2022 The latest Aged Care Financial Performance Survey from accounting firm StewartBrown highlights the enormous pressure on rural and remote aged care homes, with a...n astonishing three quarters running a deficit. Across the board were dealing with increased costs that arent being met, but in the regions, were really struggling, Pat Sparrow CEO of ACSA said. The numbers are pretty bad but whats worrying everyone the most is how this will affect the care we provide. Were seeing story after story about our workforce being under pressure, but all the solutions are being pushed back till after the Royal Commission. It shouldnt take a report like this to tell us that older people in the regions cant possibly all be getting the care they expect and deserve when providers and their workforce are under this much pressure. Were calling for more than band aid grants and one-off funding injections with a permanent $10 increase in the rural and remote supplement. We dont need a Royal Commission to tell us the situation for aged care is not OK in the regions and requires urgent action.
