09.01.2022 15 years ago I became a celebrant so I bought myself a serious suit with massive shoulder pads, a serious black briefcase, and put together a package with some pretty serious ceremonies. This was serious business. My husband Mike said tenderly with a touch of concern, "Darl, just be yourself" I freaked out because I believed that celebrants were serious and my inner self was a little (wild) Mike's art department at his studios worked on me being me and came up with some in ...situ branding photos of the real me. I got business cards from Vista Print because I received a gift with purchase. I was ready. Around many chardonnay sipping circles, I got shot down by serious celebrants tut tutting that I wouldn't last...I wasnt taking this "seriously" I even received some mean comments that my tinted sistas would understand. Many tears were shed. In those days there were no cool communities to support celebrants, I was on my pat malone. I decided to channel Aung San Suu Kyi, and Beyonce because girls run this motha yeah, in other words, women who don't take shit. Especially from other women. Hmm... 15 years later, I'm on various expert panels, a celebrant trainer with a loyal following, and thousands of happy couples and families - weddings and funerals. I'm eternally grateful to every couple and family who have put their faith in me as their celebrant And I'm still going at the same busy pace, without a shoulder pad in sight!
