11.01.2022 Shared from another group Monsoon low will deliver more heavy to flood falls of rain to northern and far northern Queensland. Northwest Queensland , the gu...lf and western peninsula will also receive heavy to flood falls. Some good falls also spreading to parts of the central west All major models have indicated a worrying scenario over the next 5 days at least with very heavy to flood falls of rain continuing as a strong monsoonal low develops from today across the southern gulf district. Initially this monsoonal low may drift a little west today and early tomorrow and be located just to the west of Burketown due to a strong ridge developing. The system then is expected to once again drift slowly east due to a strengthening monsoonal flow and become quasi stationary over the southern gulf as the ridge and monsoonal flow compete in a tug of war like scenario to steer the low. Due to the strength and positioning of the monsoonal low and the strengthening monsoonal flow very heavy to flooding rainfall is expected to continue over the east tropical coast between Cairns and Proserpine. This will be due to convergence and banding where the N to NE monsoonal flow clashes with the SE to E ridging. Heavy to flood rains also will develop from today across the western peninsula, the gulf region and likely become more widespread across the northwest district during the day due to this developing low. Rainfall will also extend into the central west with some good totals likely. It is quite unlikely this system will develop further into a cyclone at this stage. Rainfall amounts will be quite significant and lead to further flooding with severe flash flooding likely if convergent training of rainfall occurs. The coast and adjacent inland from about Cairns to Proserpine can expect 200 - 500mm across the next 5 day period with the section of coast and adjacent inland from Innisfail to Bowen likely to receive 500-800mm with higher totals of 800 - 1200 certainly possible along with higher spot totals if significant convergent training occurs. Areas across the western peninsula gulf and northwest can expect falls of 150 - 400mm with higher spot totals possible. Over the remainder of the peninsula falls of 50-200mm are likely. Further south across the central west falls of 20- 150mm are likely with higher spot totals. This will not break the drought but it is great news for those that have been heavily affected by drought for many years. Further south and east it is likely to remain mainly dry with only light falls expected across the central east and south east as well as far southern and southwest districts.
