24.01.2022 Although a range of new pre and post-emergent herbicides will be available in the coming seasons - helping to broaden weed control options - non-chemical tools remain vital to counter the herbicide resistance threat. Speaking at the northern GRDC Grains Research Update events, Greg Condon, from Grassroots Agronomy and WeedSmart, said new chemistry creates opportunities for targeting resistant weeds or managing resistance through alternative use patterns. via Grains Research and Development Corporation

23.01.2022 Barley grass has a number of tactics up its sleeve to help evade both herbicide and non-herbicide weed control methods. This has made it a weed of interest for The University of Adelaide Weed Science Group, led by Associate Professor Gurjeet Gill, who are investigating the ecology of emerging weeds in the low rainfall zones of southern Australia. With investment from Grains Research and Development Corporation, Dr Gill and his team analysed the dormancy traits and herbicide ...resistance status of 146 random samples of barley grass collected by agronomists in WA, SA, Victoria and NSW in 2018. Of the 146 random samples collected, 5% of populations showed resistance to Group A herbicides and 21% showed resistance to Group B herbicides. There was no evidence of resistance to glyphosate or paraquat. Read the full story here

23.01.2022 Chances are you have a suite of ‘go-to’ herbicides & chances are you use them regularly because they work. Jason Sabeeney, Syngentauz is challenging growers to consider breaking established patterns & use as many MoA as possible in the programs: https://buff.ly/3hZI3NT

22.01.2022 Have you noticed some changes to the WeedSmart website this week? If your answer was "sure have", you'd be correct! We've launched our brand new website! Please bear with us while make a few final updates this week https://buff.ly/38TPRjm

20.01.2022 Today on the Regional Update, we catch up with our WeedSmart Southern Extension Agronomist, Greg Condon, based in Junee, NSW. We focus on late-season weed assessments and what growers and advisers need to plan for the rest of the season. Listen here

19.01.2022 Farming in the medium rainfall district of SA, Kevin Simon trialed chaff lining for the first time in 2017. Kevin planted early maturing PBA Wharton field peas to help bring annual ryegrass numbers back under control. The field peas yielded around 34 t/ha and, being early maturing, offered an opportunity to harvest early and catch the ryegrass before it lodged or set seed. Learn more about Kevin's system here:

18.01.2022 Is it safe to use higher rates of glyphosate & how does it help? In this 'Ask an Expert' GOA (Grain Orana Alliance) Maurie Street explains why poor weed control might not always mean a case of herbicide resistance. Read more below

16.01.2022 Happy National Ag Day! Sharing stories is a powerful way to evoke practice change and we're so fortunate to have farmers, agronomists, researchers and collaborators so willing to do so. Our most recent Case Study subjects are featured below: https://buff.ly/2IGznRj #AgDayAU

16.01.2022 An interactive spreadsheet tool, developed by Peter Newman from WeedSmart Innovations, is available to growers and advisors to compare the costs of the available harvest weed seed control (HWSC) tools, using data and costings from their own farm situation.

16.01.2022 Keen to understand how to manage weeds in a high residue system? Next week University of Sydney Michael Walsh & Greg Condon will discuss using a wide range of tools to successfully farm in strip & disc systems. Register for this free webinar

15.01.2022 Do you know your herbicide resistance status? Knowing the resistance status of weeds, rather than making assumptions, will allow you to implement more targeted + cost-effective weed management strategies. Learn more about resistance testing - https://buff.ly/2R6paOD

14.01.2022 There are several reasons why weeds might survive a herbicide treatment but it is increasingly common for herbicide resistance to be the culprit. Testing weeds for herbicide susceptibility and resistance can save growers thousands of dollars, making the investment of a few hundred in testing very worthwhile. With herbicide resistance testing more available than it's ever been, there is no reason not to get your weeds tested for resistance & the time to collect weed seeds is a...pproaching! 11.01.2022 Clean seed don’t seed resistant weeds! Planting clean seed avoids the risk of spreading herbicide resistance and ensures the crop gets a head start on the weeds. If weeds are planted at the same time as the crop they have access to all the same resources as the crop and can often out-compete the establishing crop. This can potentially reduce crop yield and almost certainly means that the weeds will set abundant seed and most likely shed that seed before the crop is harvested, increasing the weed pressure in future years: https://buff.ly/3m7wGqO

08.01.2022 Group Gs have a place in northern cropping systems both in summer and winter crop scenarios. In our webinar last Friday, we asked Andrew Somvervaille to explain Group G use in both systems. Watch the full recording here https://buff.ly/36DCeCr Co-host: @PaulMacAHRI_PUL

07.01.2022 In our most recent webinar, hear from Dr Michael Walsh, Sydney University and Greg Condon, WeedSmart on dealing with weed challenges in strip and disc systems. Growers are using a wide range of cultural tools with herbicides to successfully farm in high residue cropping programs. If you missed Friday's webinar with Greg Condon & Michael Walsh discussing handling weeds in high reside systems, you can now watch it below

06.01.2022 There has been a lot of development in the weed seed impact mill space over the past couple of years. In this podcast from earlier in the year, we hear from growers about their experience using the different mills including the Seed Terminator, iHSD and Redekop Manufacturing SCU.
