15.01.2022 Ryde’s Armenian sister city saved, But in a ‘shameful’ ceasefire deal Ryde’s Armenian speaking community is coming to terms with a ceasefire agreement that some regard as a shameful backdown by the Armenian government in the recent conflict in Artsakh, but others believe it has saved Ryde’s Sister City of Stepanakert from a catastrophe. The ceasefire has left Armenian’s with around 25% of their self governing nation, Artsakh, leaving the rest under Azerbaijani control. Armeni...an’s in the region have been forced out of their homes, with many burning them to the ground rather than having them taken over by Azeris. Turkey and Azerbaijan’s role in this conflict is perceived by Armenian’s, as a continuation of the systematic planned genocide, committed in 1915, by the Ottoman Empire, where 1.5 million Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians were massacred. Recently, Armenian’s around Australia have come together to show solidarity through marches and protests. You can read more about this in this weeks TWT issue, the link is in our bio.

10.01.2022 VALE JACK MUNDEY AO A TRUE VISIONARY Jack Mundey sadly passed away on 10 May 2020. He will always be remembered as a true visionary and a great Australian. He... was instrumental with the ‘Battlers of Kelly’s Bush’ in the creation of the World’s first Green Ban that protected and saved significant bushland at Hunters Hill in the heart of Sydney from destruction and development. Jack over the years inspired many communities to fight to preserve the natural and built heritage. In Hunters Hill it was not only Kelly’s Bush, he also strongly supported the battle to keep Woolwich Dock and surrounding parklands in public ownership and was at the barricades in the battle for our very survival as an independent council. The VIDEO is a brief tribute by Phil Jenkyn OAM, former chair of the ‘Defenders of Sydney Harbour Foreshores’ and Co-convenor of ‘Save Hunters Hill Municipality Coalition’, taken in Kelly’s Bush the day after Jack died.

05.01.2022 The 2019 Granny Smith Festival 'Miss Eastwood' Queen Quest yesterday at Eastwood Shopping Centre saw Divya Ahlawat hand over the crown to new queen, Laura Middleton runner-up and Selina Lin second runner-up. Coverage of the event - on video and unadulterated (Note: some parts inaudible) - courtesy of the global news resources of Humans of Eastwood Daily. Apart from ceremonial proceedings, MCd by a tag team of 'North West Sydney's Golden Tonsils' Stephen Sim and Eastwood Cham...ber of Commerce prez (and bowling green smiling assassin) Victor Tagg, the video also contains a lovely gesture by City of Ryde Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou who - during his official ceremonial duties called on his councillor colleague Trenton Brown to join him on the podium to announce the winner. Cr Brown told The Weekly Times - Australia the gesture was appreciated. In recent times common courtesy among councillors has given way to adversarial shenanigans, some of it the result of party political manoeuvring at council meetings. Nice one Simon! See more
