22.01.2022 Lori-Keith came here as a juvenile in early November having recovered from neurological symptoms in the care of a kind gentleman who found him with concussion and contracted feet/legs. He will be flying free very soon after building up his strength and stamina for the wild.Thank you Manna Gum Wildlife Shelter for your great care. The joy of his release is counteracted with the sadness of losing Lorikeet Donatello...... Sadly at only 60% of his weight, starvation had led to irreversible damage. RIP Donny....may your flight be light and food always abundant

22.01.2022 If one dream dies, dream another dream. If you get knocked down, get back up and go again. Joel Osteen Lori-Keefe has come to the shelter after initially being cared for elsewhere. That’s where he got his name-pronunciation from a toddler Found suffering concussion with neurological symptoms, he is making a full and speedy recovery.

22.01.2022 Isn’t little Private adorable This is is his story: He was ‘rescued’ and kept for a couple of days by someone on holidays...they dropped him off to a vet clinic on their way home.... He spent the weekend in a box with water and cat food. Private is a newly fledged magpie, apart from not needing to be ‘rescued’, he relies on mum and dad to feed him. His parents are devoted and meticulous in their care. By the time he came here he was exhibiting signs of starvation and liver failure. Sadly any plans to return him to his parents have been cancelled. He died overnight. If you suspect a young bird needs rescuing, unless they are in immediate danger, please leave them where they are and call for help/advice: Wildlife Victoria 8400 7300 between 6:40am-7:30pm 7 days a week. Aware 0412 433 727....24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please have these numbers in your phone.

21.01.2022 Your parents spent: 7 weeks diligently building their nest. 3 weeks fiercely protecting their eggs. 4 weeks tirelessly feeding, caring and protecting their chicks still in the nest. 2 weeks protecting, feeding and teaching them on the ground.... Then in just an instant you were taken from them, scooped up and taken to a vet clinic because you were not welcome on the property. I am grateful your life was spared, but you’ll never see your parents again and I will never be able to give you all they could.

21.01.2022 Mysa was successfully reunited with her parents this afternoon after 6 days of separation. It took only 45 minutes for them to arrive, and Mysa wasn’t even calling. Dad kept watch in a tall tree while mum sussed it all out and reconnected.... With the cage open Mysa hid in a nearby bush while dad stayed on guard and Mum went to find food. You’ve been gone so long I’m gonna make you the best meal ever! What a happy day... Video to come.

21.01.2022 Eyes so young, so full of pain ... Two lonely drops of winter rain ... -Shaun Hick And then there were ten.... New orphan arrival, Annie Safe now

20.01.2022 You survived 8 hours after the cat found you and did what cats instinctively do. I’m so sorry beautiful girl Please keep cats indoors or in a suitable outdoor enclosure. It’s just not fair to do otherwise.

19.01.2022 Those who wish to pet and baby wild animals 'love' them. But those who respect their natures and wish to let them live normal lives, love them more. Edwin Way Teale This is Oswald, a fledgling raven, underweight, malnourished and showing bone/beak deformities from mineral deficiency. Hopefully we can reverse the damage done from being ‘kept’ for 3 weeks and fed an inappropriate diet in form and frequency.... Wild birds belong in the wild. Baby birds belong with their parents. 18.01.2022 Day five of recovery for this young Rainbow lorikeet, Orion. With his leg injury greatly improved, and doing all the things a healthy lorikeet can do, release is imminent. What a joyful bird the lorikeet is

15.01.2022 Meet Gabriel, our young Rainbow Lorikeet As a fledgling, his vocal repertoire consists of a high pitch wheeze.....and seemingly all the time, not just when hungry! Regardless, it doesn’t make him any less adorable... Soon we’ll pair him up with Rafael

13.01.2022 Conservation is not just important for protecting endangered species. Protecting habitat is good for everyone.... The findings of a recent study from the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity revealed that greater bird bodiversity brings greater joy to people.... There are other studies also supporting the importance of birdlife for our mental wellbeing. So lets protect the trees we have, fill our gardens with indigenous plants and let the birds fill our hearts with joy Rainbow lorikeets like Gabriel like the nectar in flowers from eucalypts, grevilleas, banksias, callistemons and melaleucas.

13.01.2022 It is a happy talent to know how to play. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Magpies have it mastered

12.01.2022 Born out of love and necessity, Weelam has cared for more than 70 animals over the last 12 months. On the first anniversary of the shelter, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to family, friends and all who have supported us along the way. Much love, Nat

08.01.2022 In 2017 two magpie fledglings came into my life. They taught me so much. Toby didn’t make it, but Atticus stayed until she felt the call of the wild.... She changed my life and awakened me to the complexity and beauty of magpies. This time of year she’s on my mind more often. Hopefully still living wild and free. Atticus, the first magpie raised and released from what is now Weelam Wildlife Shelter.

07.01.2022 Our most basic instinct is not for survival but for family. Paul Pearsall New girl Georgie, one of seven new admissions this past week, has been lovingly welcomed by Jack and Meg. That’s her in the middle of the snug with a big smile on her tiny face

07.01.2022 Please put water out for wildlife on these hot days. Use only shallow containers so small animals do not drown. Alternatively (or additionally) add a few rocks or sticks so they can easily crawl out. You can also hang them in trees and on fences. Make sure they’re in a shady spot, out of the way of human activity and protected from domestic animals.... Please note that nocturnal animals out during the day, tree dwelling animals sitting on the ground, or animals that are lethargic or staggering may be suffering from heat stress. Birds will be panting with their wings open and having difficulty with balance. Keep your local wildlife rescue number handy.

07.01.2022 Every day there are innocent souls whose precious lives are cut short, usually by some human connection, whether car, cat, dog, or removal of trees. We need to cherish these lives. We can do better

05.01.2022 Water is life So a quick reminder to put out water for wildlife, especially on these extremely hot days Shallow dishes are recommended but bird baths and larger containers are appreciated by birds...just ensure there’s a way out for smaller critters in the way of rocks or a stick/branch Magpie Johnny cooling himself down

05.01.2022 The more I work with birds, the more I believe in the undreamt, the things we are not given to know. Julie Zickefoose Day three of R&R & TLC following concussion. Meet Marcus the Raven.

02.01.2022 It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. Henry David Thoreau I see a strong, determined, beautiful soul, who is whole, and will one day fly free... Rafael, the Rainbow Lorikeet

02.01.2022 Another cat attack victim. Her parents did a great job protecting her, but with puncture wounds to her legs she requires antibiotic treatment for five more days before she can be reunited with them. Meet Mysa

02.01.2022 Did you know that in Australia cars are responsible for the death of more than four million mammals and six million birds, reptiles and other animals per year. (Sep 26, 2019) That’s a very sad stat I wonder if it takes into account those that make it to shelters but die later? RIP beautiful raven.

01.01.2022 When it comes to raising ringtail joeys, two are better than one. Solitude is not their thing. Little Annie has a buddy now. Oliver and Annie.
