25.01.2022 Recently it appears that some breeders are getting their vealer specs confused with Butcher specifications and think that yearling carcases as light as 100-150kg are viable for the butcher domestic spec market - this is incorrect. Under 150kg is the vealer market for animals to be slaughtered direct from weaning, the domestic / butcher specification traditionally goes from 160kg-210kg carcase weight (280kg-350kg liveweight). Having a 4th generation butcher in the househol...d I can guarantee that you are better hitting the 180-220kg range and turn off animals at 10-12 months in that specification, or grow them on 12-14 months to 200-240kg carcases to hit the light supermarket specification/domestic wholesale specification (where a lot of butchers get their supply nowadays rather than buying whole bodies). This is also essential to get into the MSA grading window which often starts at a 200kg carcase - to achieve this with dressing percentages around 54% (common for british breeds but can be 52-58%) you would need an animal around 380kg liveweight at the farm gate to allow for weight loss travelling. A good article as a guide on this is the DPI Primefact on market specifications which was republished in 2015 and which has a great reference graph which I include below. The Sydney Royal Carcase competition specs shown in the table also provide an indication - the minimums have increased to align with the current market requirements - meaning if breeders dont maintain growth they will not be suitable at the yearling age as intended by the founders of the breed. https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//mar/beef-market-specifications

24.01.2022 More photos of the young Steer axel who was a twin calf and is by Weethalle Kelso and out of Thurloo Park Blanch 3rd (an amazing cow who also bred the champion bulls Laird and Monarch)

24.01.2022 14 month old bull for sale - Weethalle Ben Nevis. By Weethalle Laird (Javid Horowitz / Thurloo Park Blanch 3rd) out of Weethalle Lotus who goes back to Cluskers Lotus / Brown sugar lines. Ready to work this spring. Shown as a calf with good comments in Show ring and is halter broken to tie and lead and has a good temperament. Squaremeaters Frame Score 3 measuring 107cm at 12 months and with great muscle down his back. So good to use over bigger cows for those establishing a more moderate efficient herd.

24.01.2022 The advantage of using yearling bulls is quick genetic turnover, Monarch at 23 months already has a couple of calves on the ground having being loaned to Chevalier College as a yearling bull to support their breeding program. You should be careful not to ask too much of them with too many head to cover and always watch condition to ensure they maintain enough condition to keep growing and finishing themselves. Very pleased to support Chevalier with their first fully homebred Heifer and bull calves.

23.01.2022 Some of the Weethalle 10-12 months calves being finished locally - the tops are near 400kg and finishing well on a crop

22.01.2022 Great news from Moss Vale Show with the Chev team winning Champion Steer with the excellent squaremeaters x Angus steer from Palmerston Stud in Gloucester beating some great purebred Angus entries. Also placed 4th was a purebred Weethalle steer and a Weethalle sired purebred steer bred at Chev out of a Antill cow so great to see that all the hard work that Hayley Mahoney and her team have put in is paying off. We wish them luck for Sydney.

22.01.2022 Lovely group of Weethalle Laird calves on the ground with both spring and early autumn calves - some showing great muscle patterns. Weethalle Stud retained a share in Laird when sold to Thurloo Park and its great to see his stamp back on the herd. Will be another crop of caves by him next spring.

21.01.2022 Well we had a range of weather in Canberra Royal this year. Super hot humid and sunny on Friday with the Squaremeaters judging and then the heavens opened on Sunday with the parade of champions cancelled and the interbreed held in a marquee to avoid the downpour. Although numbers werent large, Chevalier College, Javid, Rainbow and Weethalle all had cattle in the ring. A Javid bull took champion junior with a lovely young bull shown by Tom Cairns in Reserve. We were pleas...ed to get Junior champion female with Weethalle Amie, she went on to get Grand Champion female and Supreme of the breed. Weethalle Monarch of the Glen got up to be senior champion with the judge complementing his length and weight for age, but it was a very close call with a great senior bull from Javid coming in reserve. Monarch went on to become grand champion bull. In the cows a Javid cow and calf came senior champion female, with our Lotus cow coming in Reserve. Chevalier college unlucky as had a lovely Heifer who has not yet calved who was beaten by the cows with calves at foot. Apologies that I dont have many photos as we were going to take photos Sunday but it was raining too much. Huge thanks to Pat and Jess who have helped us all week and at several prep shows this year - couldnt have done it without them and also Aiesha coming down to the show as one of our parade team with dad Ahmed an awesome support to us all.

20.01.2022 Wonderful to win Breeders Group and Sires Progeny at Canberra Royal with a team by Javid Horowitz who has been our foundation bull and set us up with a wonderful herd of females coming through now as well as the nice young full brother bulls Laird and Monarch. I think this is the third year we have now won with a team by this bull. Howie is actually only a frame score 4 but has great length and we are pleased with the stamp he puts on his calves. Thank you to Javid Squaremeaters for selling him to us as a calf bull. Horowitz is potentially for lease for a year or so as we dont really want to lose the option to cross back to him. Here are some photos of him and his offspring.

20.01.2022 Two bronze medals and a 1st on the hook and a 2nd and 3rd on the hoof makes an excellent Sydney Royal. Full results here: http://www.rasnsw.com.au//2018purebredsteercarcaseresultsc

18.01.2022 You know you have easy doing cattle when you get the best presented award for a mixed group of cows (G, J and K) with calves at foot - straight from the field - not supplemented with grain at all - and have come from a group of 30 cows and calves have been only getting a very limited amount of hay to keep them going with little grass at the moment. Sad to sell any of our core breeding herd - but pleased to see we sold them at their best and in good condition.

18.01.2022 *sold* Cant fault the temperament... so M28 has been in a trailer for the first time, arrived at a new property and turned out with some heifers.... hes not been properly broken in or handled much - just tied up in the yards once when we were breaking some show animals in, and he still lets you walk up and scratch him in the field in a new situation.

18.01.2022 *sold- others available though not black* First calf L cow for Sale - B grade (as black) with a steer calf at foot. Calf is now 3 months old - pictured here as newborn. We are making some room for the upcoming spring calving and it will be a shame to sell her as she is a lovely natured cow. A handful of other K and L cows and M heifers due with their first calf in Aug/Sep are for sale.

18.01.2022 Commercial Squaremeaters Bull for sale - available Aug 2018 onwards for spring joining. Born Sept 2016, by Javid Howitz sire of 2 Sydney Royal bronze medal winning steers in 2018 out of a Cluskers/Thurloo Park cow who has produced another bronze medal winning Steer. Just turned out on his first joining to a group of commercial angus heifers, an ideal heifer bull as is not extreme and exhibits easy doing tendencies. Has been grass produced with no supplementary feeding and i...n these photos is enjoying some of the best pasture in his life. (photos taken this weekend) 11 month old stud bull, dark grey, also available shortly - photos to follow.

17.01.2022 What not to keep. There was some good debate at the AGM last week on type, and the opinion from several longstanding breeders that squaremeaters cattle are losing the type initially in the breed when established 20 years ago. Below is an example of what not to keep, this is a 17 month old bull which is deceptive at 510kg and 115cm so well within frame scores and was 110cm at 12 months. ... He actually has good muscle down the spine and back, good structure and pigmentation, and a lovely temperament. He is registered and could be shown. However, we will not even sell this bull as a commercial and he will be going to the yard for meat this week as he is not of the right type to add to the squaremeaters breed - much to straight behind and lacking muscle expression and thump - I would like him to be slightly deeper as well. Before deciding to use any bull, or sell any bull - especially to other studs for breeding you should ask the same question - is this animal sufficiently true to type to be improving the breed. If not do the breed a favour and cull like we do. You rarely breed the perfect animal - but when keeping bulls you must be very disciplined to ensure that you only keep herd improvers.

16.01.2022 Washing practice for the local show...

15.01.2022 Some excellent spring calves on the ground and a few blacks (all heifers) with using Weethalle Laird as a sire last year who Weethalle Stud is pleased to retain a minor share in with Thurloo Park. Despite the dry the cows are maintaining their condition well showing the attributes of the breed.

14.01.2022 Weethalle Stud can be found at Berry Small Farm Field Days today and tomorrow - we have cows, heifers and a bull for sale. Please come and say hello and meet our cattle on display. https://m.facebook.com/Berry-Small-Farm-Field-Days-400503043304075/

14.01.2022 Really appreciate Ian Lamb and Hayley Mahoney who both produced excellent steers for us to get Bronze medals at sydney royal

14.01.2022 Very pleased to hear that axel a Weethalle bred Steer of only 11months won both the lightweight Steer class and grand champion steer at Kangaroo Valley Show today with Chevalier College against 20+ other entries. Axel is out of Thurloo Park Blanch 3rd (dam of two champion bulls Monarch and Laird) and by champion show bull Weethalle Kelso. What is truely exceptional is that he is a twin and still doing so well at under 12 months!

13.01.2022 The schedule is available to view on our webpage www.boorowashow.org.au

10.01.2022 Weethalle Stud has two 15 month old yearling bulls for sale - perfect for autumn joining. One black and one dark grey commercial. Both by Javid Horowitz.

10.01.2022 With the dry times - I would like to repost an article from 2014 Squaremeaters magazine (see page 6-7 what do you get from a steer) as when feed is short it can be difficult for cattle to be finished properly (have enough fat) to give flavour and tenderness to the beef - the steer in the article was at the minimum fat cover for most meat grading specs so visually its good to look at any 10-12 month steers / heifers in the paddock against that and see whether they need to b...e supplemented to finish to make a good price in the yards or when selling direct to the butcher. It can be sometimes better to sell some/all as weaners if you do not have the feed to finish them properly as yearling steers as its depressing if you grow animals out to 12-18 months but then get less money for them than weaners if their condition score has dropped and if the market is down. http://www.squaremeaters.com.au//uploa/2016/07/ots2014.pdf Though for those further north the challenge is to keep even the core breeding herd alive let alone in a forward condition with the drought - wishing them all luck.

10.01.2022 Weethalle Lotus and calf Ben Nevis got Reserve Snr Champion British Breed at Bungandore Show. Weethalle Amie did well to place 2nd in a very impressive class of Angus and Hereford 12-24 month heifers. Great also to see Rainbow Squaremeaters out with a nice young bull in the <12 month bull class.

09.01.2022 Kudos to Elizabeth Macarthur High School for winning the Squaremeaters class at Canberra Royal with Weethalle Georgia N4. They have done all the hard work with this heifer as we have been totally hands off. This is a half sister to last years Grand Champion female as both were by Javid Horowitz so thanks also to Javid Stud. She is from one of the last crop of calves by him - as we have been lucky to have him sire Champions 4 years in a row.

09.01.2022 Love the temperament and doing-ability of this bull. Weethalle Kelso is on loan to Chevalier College for breeding for a month or so - he has been out in the paddock for a year and working hard with joining both our spring and autumn cows, but when we were asked if they could take him to Hawkesbury Show this weekend we said why not.. a couple of baths and a trim later he has picked up both a grand champion and an interbreed ribbon (the latter with competition) but most importantly behaved himself beautifully around kids and with his new herd of females out in a strange location with other cattle around. He has also just been on average grass paddocks for the last year with no feed or supplementation since his last show outing a year ago so this is absolutely what you get straight from the paddock with a good-doing breed.

08.01.2022 A bit of a belated post - but thank you to Preston Rise Squaremeaters for sponsoring the Grand Champion Squaremeaters class at Canberra Royal earlier this year. The prize has finally caught up with me to unwrap and its very appreciated. Credit also to Elizabeth MacArthur School for preparing and showing the heifer so well to win this prize and the help also from Chevalier College and Murrumburrah High School who helped take some heifers for showing over the last summer which helped retain them back from being sold due to drought conditions. Without all these three schools all the N show heifers would have not been retained. Jo

07.01.2022 We got a bronze medal, a first and won the virtual taste test! So pleased, and win a second! on the hoof I think thats a great outcome for a great squaremeaters Steer.

05.01.2022 Good outing at crookwell show with around 180 entries and a Hereford feature this weekend. Amie beat Lotus for Supreme and Monarch was unfortunately the only Sqm bull. But he presented well in a strong interbreed bull class with some magnificent animals from top class studs heading to Sydney:

05.01.2022 Tattooing, measuring and weighing day at Weethalle Stud of the 2017 heifers. After an intensive course in tying and handling from Bert Barrass of mobile cattle care and chief handler Emily Simmons visiting for her school holidays all of the 12 were tied up and then led out in hand via a 50 acre paddock to their paddock for the next month. Some of these heifers will be on exhibition at Berry Field Days if not sold by then. If a school is interested I would happily provide easy payment terms as most of these would now be ideal for a school or a junior to have a bit of fun with showing. I do have a couple of heifers retained that I would like to send to a school to show on our behalf if any ag teacher is interested.

04.01.2022 Although we are not showing this year we have Weethalle Georgia N4 - out and about with Elizabeth Macarthur School who are doing a great job with her.

04.01.2022 Stud Reduction. Due to tough times we are going to have to reduce our stud breeding herd - and now have Bulls, cows and heifers for sale. Some of our best bloodlines and animals are available including successful show animals such as Weethalle Monarch of the Glen pictured below - a multiple supreme champion bull winning this year at Canberra Royal and now rising 2.5 years old with multiple calves on the ground who is available end Oct. ... Please get in touch if you want to add some beautiful quiet cattle to your herd - all in good paddock condition and not drought impacted yet but numbers need to be cut so we can keep it that way.

04.01.2022 Keeping everything crossed for Chevalier (Hayley Mahoney) and Ian Lamb as well as the other squaremeaters breeders representing the breed at Sydney Royal today.

03.01.2022 We have two fenced parading rings for the cattle judging tomorrow at Boorowa show and a new concrete wash pad as well as the existing facilities in the cattle yards thanks to the Hilltops Council Works team and additional tie rails in the shed as the shed is now dual purpose to also help the picnic races. As a small show we can only improve gradually but happy to continue to collect ideas to make this a great fun and friendly show for cattle breeders and junior and school cattle paraders.

01.01.2022 Get your cattle entries in tomorrow for Saturdays boorowa show cattle section to qualify for discounts on entry (and to allow me to try and get entries organised on Friday) so far we have shorthorns, squares, mini Hereford, mini Galloway and charbray entered with an great paraders entry from murrumburrah harden enroute - all entries for a fun friendly and relaxed show for both handlers and cattle are really appreciated Email your entries to [email protected] and pay on the day
