24.01.2022 People from Narrabri & surrounding towns will be coming together this weekend to discuss issues happening on country. This event is about bringing people togeth...er for cultural awareness and education and will be an opportunity to hear from Elders and representatives from local communities. I’m in Sydney for the next two weeks for the last stretch of sitting weeks for 2020 and while I won’t be able to attend in person, I hope the day is supported by many in the region

21.01.2022 'Katie & Ali' Katie "I originally came to this area because of my husband Ben Watson. We met when we were both at boarding school in Toowoomba. Sally, Ben's si...ster, was my best friend at school. It wasn't until a long time after we left school that a love interest struck up between us. I don't think there was any sign of interest from either of us when we were at school. After we left school, we met up again, and I think it's fair to say Ben made the first move, but he didn't have to twist my arm for too long. We started going out not long before I left to travel and live overseas, so we embarked on a long-distance relationship for a few months, then Ben flew over to visit me while I was living in Whistler in Canada and we flew home together. Once back in Australia I was at a bit of a loose end, so I moved back to my parent's farm near Warialda and Ben's cousin notified me of a job going in Narrabri with the council in a marketing and tourism role. So I applied for the job and got it and thought I'd give Narrabri a go. I'd be close to Ben, and it would be perfect. So, that's how I got here and I've never looked back. We now have three children - George is four-years-old, Lucy is two and Waldo is two months old. We live on a dryland and irrigated cropping farm at Spring Plains and we run about six thousand sheep as well, which we are still building up again post-drought. Shearing is also coming up again very soon." Ali "I also fell for a farmer - it seems like the boys did a good job recruiting us to live here. A good friend of mine had a birthday party on the other side of Narrabri and Gus and I were both at the party and that's how we met. I thought he was very polite and had good chat. I was living and working in Sydney at the time. I work as a journalist, so when I met Gus I was working as a producer at Channel 9 with 60 Minutes. We did the long-distance thing for a little while and then I moved up here in about June 2018. It was a friend that introduced us and I also have another great old school friend who lives at Walgett, so it's not like the area was super new to me. As much as I was from Sydney, I had been up this way on a number of occasions before I met Gus and I liked this part of the world. I have one older sister who lives in Sydney with her family. I was born in Canberra and attended primary school there before going away to boarding school in the Southern Highlands in NSW. My dad is in Sydney and my mum is on the border of NSW and Queensland near the beach which is lovely for holidays." Katie "I was raised on our family farm near Warialda. I grew up there, went to primary school there and then went away to boarding school. I loved boarding school. I was an only child for ten years before my little brother came along, so I guess I enjoyed the company of living and being around all my friends all the time at school." Ali "I was the same as Katie, I enjoyed boarding school. My sister was at boarding school before me so maybe that made it an easier transition. I think that you meet so many different people at boarding school and as much as I was from the city, I've always been a country enthusiast so during the holidays friends might come home to the city with me or I'd come up to their farms in the country. It's a great way to meet all sorts of people and they're the kind of friends you keep and stick with you for life. I actually went to school with the friend who had the birthday party near Narrabri where I met Gus. Gus runs cattle on the farm here at 'Nowley', Burren Junction and also has crops. Obviously, this year was the first harvest in three years for people in the district because of the drought, and it was the first time there's been a harvest since I moved here. It was so exciting. There was a buzz in town too and it was so busy. I guess being a journalist is part of my identity and you do get addicted to sharing stories. It's something I've loved for a long time, so starting off working for the local paper has been a nice way to get to know different people, separately to Gus. In a way, working as a local journo means you have an excuse to go to events and things for the paper, and introduce yourself to different people. Katie planted the seed for the podcast series idea that we're working on now called Bush Wanderlust. Katie and I, along with another local girl, went to an event earlier this year in Orange called The Huddle. It was organised by a really successful and incredibly generous, Orange-based businesswoman by the name of Pip Brett. She's a great cheerleader for regional women and it was essentially a women's networking event - a weekend full of ideas and inspiration including tips on everything from social media to how to make a business idea work from a regional location. Katie and I both thought two of the 'buzz words' from the weekend were podcasts and collaboration. So we collaborated to make a podcast. There were so many wonderful and diverse speakers at the event who are all achieving awesome things. The majority of them are running their business from regional areas, and I think that reflects the fact that the Internet and social media have really opened up so many more career choices for regional women. There’s more choices than there were even say five years ago. There's also huge benefit in teaming up and working with someone else, like what I'm doing with Katie - we both have different skill-sets plus we can bounce things off each other. It's also a lot more fun than working on your own. Working as a journalist with The Courier and Wee Waa News I know this is a great news patch and you're never going to run out of stories to tell about people in this region." Katie "I was working at the Narrabri Visitor Information Centre at the time as their Tourism and Promotions Officer, my manager Penny asked me for some fresh ideas on how to promote our region due to a tourism downturn as a result of the drought and bushfires in the National Park. I was still buzzing post Huddle, and I suggested we create a podcast about sharing the stories of local people - the whole life in the bush concept. I thought we had pretty amazing locals here who Ali interviews every day, so why don't we hear from them about why they love the region. Not just the well-known things but unknown places and things that tourists don't hear about. So, I put that idea to Penny. She loved it and told me to do it. One problem, I had never made a podcast! So I immediately rang Ali to see if she would help and collaborate with me; she was willing and very enthusiastic about giving it a go." Ali "That's another thing that came from The Huddle - having the confidence to back yourself and give it a go. It may not be perfect the first time, but it's important to just give it a crack. Some of the speakers spoke about how being in a small community can be wonderful for support, but it can also make you worry more about what people might say about what you're trying to do, especially if it’s different and that can knock your confidence around a bit. We thought we'd give it a try and if it doesn't work, well, at least we tried. But since we've released the podcast people have been so supportive and kind, and we've really appreciated that. It's been wonderful." Katie "We have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement." Ali "There's no doubt the people we've interviewed have great stories and our belief in their story, is what we hope will make the community and visitors embrace the project and enjoy listening. It's all about the people of the Narrabri region. It was quite important to us that we interview people from the wider region, people from Boggabri, people from Wee Waa, farmers and volunteers. Coming from the city, the volunteers in the country have totally blown my mind. People's ability to put their hand up to help and be the backbone of everything that happens." Katie "If it encourages one person to come to the region when the region wasn't on their radar or wasn't just a stopover point and they hear the podcast and think, wow, that place sounds really awesome, that's enough for me. That person will inevitably enjoy their time here and go back and tell their family and friends about it. And even if some of our locals learn about a place they've never been to that's just an hours’ drive from their home - I think that's great too. I think it's really nice to discover your own backyard." Ali "We've interviewed shearer Col 'Mad Dog' Gillham and spent time with him in a shearing shed at Boggabri. He might be called 'Mad Dog' and you could think that he comes across as a bit of a knockabout because of his name, he's eaten sheep's brains and done some wild things, but he has a heart of absolute gold. He's raised so much money for charity and for really important causes, and it's all gone back into the community. I mean he did the 40- hour shear-athon for charity that Katie's family was involved in too. I love that about country people, you can almost stereotype someone and then, boom, there's this surprise you didn't know about, and you think, wow." Katie "I learned so much from Ali along the way. Her skills as a producer, I'm in awe of. Working with her is like a powerhouse." Ali "No, I'm not." Katie "You are, you're amazing. Your ability to know what's going to work and what's not, a lot of people don't have that. It may be experience but it's also natural talent." Ali "It's not always perfect but the basics of how to tell a good story, whether you're doing it at a level where you have a whole production crew helping or whether you're just like us - two chicks from the farm having a go - finding people with the ability to tell their story is essential, we're so reliant on them. One of the first tips I got as a young journalist was you have two ears and one mouth use them in that proportion. Listen." Katie "When I first moved here, I was in awe of the mountain range. I remember driving across from Warialda the first time to see Ben. As I was driving between Bingara and Narrabri across the Nandewar Range and I was thinking, all of my friends from the city have to take this beautiful drive. It blew my mind. Before starting a job in tourism, I never knew much about the region even though I grew up just two hours from Narrabri. The plains also blew my mind, how flat they were and how you could see for miles and miles. But I quickly discovered it wasn't the place, it was the people. I was accepted into the community from the get go. Ben introduced me to his friends, and they quickly became my friends." Ali "I have to agree with Katie in terms of - it's the people here, not just the places. When I moved here, there were dust storms and the drought was bad, and as much as I know there's plenty of beautiful things to see here - I still really do think it's been the community that's impressed me the most. There are so many people who are actively engaged in doing things. Look at Katie, she has three children, yet she's put her heart and soul into this and we're having fun. Definitely, the drought brought the word resilience to light all the time. Country people's ability to pick themselves up and think that tomorrow is going to be a better day, and find the silver lining. You have to just get on with life out here, and that's the strength of character you see and which you'll hear about in our podcast interviews. Regarding our podcast, be kind to us because we're still learning, but you'll love hearing the local stories. Search for 'Bush Wanderlust' or go to https://player.whooshkaa.com/shows/bush-wanderlust-podcast or follow the Narrabri Region or Bush Wanderlust podcast on social media and you'll find the links."

11.01.2022 Unfortunately, despite best efforts the Wee Waa High School has seen an escalation in what is understood to be allergic reaction after rainfall several weeks ag...o. There are currently ongoing investigations into the cause of illness in students and staff at Wee Waa High School. I have kept in regular contact with the Department and the Minister regarding the situation. The decision has been made to move all students, teaching and administrative staff to the Wee Waa Public school site and joint locate until the situation at the high school is fully resolved . A working group of staff and parents will be meeting for the first time on Monday to oversee the transfer and establish the most effective and efficient way to ensure that students and staff can return to face-to-face learning while remaining safe from harm. I will be in communication with parent representatives after Monday’s meeting.

We have facilitated 6 programs over the last 1...2 years resulting in approx 100 graduates who are now progressing their leadership pathways. So, we want to share a couple of testimonials. The first is from cotton grower @georgiahbrown from Boomi in NSW. "The Future Cotton Leaders Program is an extremely rewarding program for anyone wanting to grow their personal and professional development. The Program pushed me both personally and professionally out of my comfort zone. Completing the program really helped build my confidence in taking on roles in my community and industry. The program taps into incredible resources and networks which exposed me to industry leaders and networks that I would not of otherwise had the opportunity to meet. Overall, the program kick started me into developing good business and personal habits which have benefited my own business and my ability to contribute to our industry."

03.01.2022 RAT BAIT - BLOOD DONORS In the last few weeks we have seen an increase in the number of dogs exposed to rat bait. Rat bait is an anticoagulant and prevents ...blood from clotting, which can lead to DEATH. As the number of cases has increased so rapidly we are quickly running out of suitable blood donors. We would like a put a call out to our valued community to put their large breed dogs on a blood donor list that we can call if blood is required. Suitable donors would be: * Over 25kg * Aged between 1-5 years old * Fully vaccinated * Good temperament * In good health If you think your dog may be suitable please comment or call the Narrabri (6792 4388) or Wee Waa (6795 3066) Veterinary Clinics. We would greatly appreciate your help saving lives As always prevention is better than a cure, so if you have rat baits out make sure your animals cannot get to them, and watch out for baited mice/rats as animals can eat them and get affected too. Please contact the clinic if you think your animal may have been exposed to rat bait, or if you would like more information.
