20.01.2022 Tech Tip Tuesday: The selection of Surge Protection Devices for mains can often be confusing. A simple starting point is to commence at the main power board. For MEN systems, a single-pole device for 1ph or a three-pole device for 3ph is used. At the distribution board, we then fit either one or three-pole devices but now we must protect the neutral. A 1+1 pole or 3 +1 pole device is required. In most cases, at least a 40kA Imax rated device can be used in both the main and distribution boards. For areas of high lightning or critical applications up to a 100kA Imax device could be fitted in the mainboard.
