09.01.2022 I get asked plenty of questions about supplementation and what will help with performance and achieving goals. Here is a great post from @thealanaragon about the supplements that have been shown by research to provide benefits and where these benefits are most prominent. Please read his entire post, I personally find the cake analogy is the most important piece of information! #Repost @thealanaragon with @get_repost... Supplementation for sports performance doesnt have to be complicated. Theres only a handful of compounds that have strong scientific support. Ive laid them out in this graphic, and placed them in their respective domains along the strength-endurance continuum. The solid lines denote stronger research evidence, the dotted lines denote weaker evidence. - Nitrate has a question mark since its effectiveness has been modest but more consistent than a multitude of compounds whose evidence base is truly scarce & equivocal. - Notice how caffeines effectiveness spans the entire continuum. The initial version of this pic had caffeine spanning the middle to the right, but I expanded it all the way across, in light of recent research. Also note that caffeine is the only compound there thats a drug. - Keep in mind that Im a proponent of using the least amount of performance-enhancing compounds necessary to get the job done for the goals of the individual. This least necessary philosophy of performance enhancers makes the most sense from the standpoint of minimizing health (and economic) risk. - Its worth mentioning that the general population largely can attain their goals without any of these supps. Athletes have different demands & motivations, including seeking the competitive edge. - Big picture perspective: dont forget my cake analogy describing the hierarchy of importance. Total daily macro- and micronutrition comprise the foundation (the cake). The icing is the timing of the constituent doses of the cake. Supplements are the sprinkles on the icing. In other words, they can provide a competitive advantage, but not unless the right dietary foundation is in place. #science #research #evidence #doyoueven #aarr See more
