25.01.2022 Brilliant and beautiful, Garth. Fortunate are those who are able to experience this splendour and majesty, and with such appreciation - just as the Weindorfers recognised and intended... for all people, for all time.
24.01.2022 We hope you will thoroughly enjoy watching this fascinating 90 year-old film by H J King (1930) entitled: Cradle Mountain in Winter. See Bob Quaile's horse drawn cart with passengers bouncing over rocks and creeks, Gustav and mates including Ron Smith, H J King and others frolicking in the snow and (who appears to be) Bob Quail chopping wood...
24.01.2022 In case you missed it yesterday - have a listen to our informative interview on 7AD Radio with Martin Agatyn across North West Tassie...
21.01.2022 We could not have asked for a more "glorious" day on all levels, from the speakers at the Memorial Service, the Crescendo Choir, displays and artefacts, historical slides and photographs, the many and varied connections with history and people, and of course the magnificent weather. Thank you each and every one for your contributions in the production of this wonderful, jolly, joyful, nostalgic and sometimes quite emotional event,
19.01.2022 When writer Kate Legge's marriage broke up after almost 30 years, she went walking on Tasmania's Cradle Mountain. There she discovered the story of pioneering n...aturalists Gustav Weindorfer and Kate Cowle. From vastly different backgrounds but with a shared enthusiasm for botany and mountain climbing, Kate and Gustav fell in love in 1903. After climbing Cradle Mountain together, they decided to open a guest house in that remote and beautiful place. Gustav built Waldheim with his own hands, cutting the planks of King Billy pine and carting up the cast iron bath and wood stove on his back. He and Kate advocated to have this pristine wilderness protected, imagining it as a sanctuary for generations to come. 17.01.2022 The Weindorfer Memorial Committee usually marks the commemoration of Gustav Weindorfer with a full day event at Wilmot, TAS we call Base Camp of Cradle Mountain This year living with a fatal virus similar to the one Gustav and Kate would have experience in 1918, we find yourselves isolated. Hence during this period, the Weindorfer Memorial Committee featuring The Mountain Choir is presenting a short film to commemorate Gustav Weindorfer and his legacy. The short film wi...ll be available on YouTube after midday today so followers can share and enjoy the images, music and story. The Inspiration - On the 5th of May 1932, 88 years ago, a man with a vision, passed away in a place he came to call home and built his chalet- Walheim at Cradle Mountain - a place where there is no time and nothing matters Gustav Weindorfer and his wife Kate had a vision and passion to preserve and learn about nature and in the Cradle Mountain area, they found their veritable El Dorado for the botanist. Kate wrote in an article .even the most ardent botanist or geologist must pause to admire it, with that silent outreach of the soul towards eternal beauty The inspiration of Gustav, Kate and friends is recognised today by the many thousand visitors from all over the world to the UNESCO Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair Natural Park. This must be a National Park for all the people for all time. It is magnificent, and people must know about it and enjoy it declared Gustav Weindorfer After the Virus - Next year the committee will be organising on the first Sunday in May, the annual Memorial Day at Wilmot, TAS and appreciate your support in keeping the vision alive.

15.01.2022 So who is Gustav Weindorfer? Gustav was known as "the guardian of the Mountain". Through the pioneering vision of Gustav and Kate Weindorfer and their tireless efforts at the turn of the last century, their beautiful hand-built Chalet home in the wilderness named Waldheim, nestled in the Cradle Valley... they welcomed the first "tourists" to the area for the purpose of scenic beauty and appreciation for the botany and wildlife, skiing and mountain climbing. While very nearby ...was being logged and cattle were run at Middlesex Plains and the Vale of Belvoir. Through persistent striving by the Weindorfers, the conservation of Cradle Mountain was birthed and has brought us to what we have today, the UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area. Without the Weindorfers vision, we believe the Cradle Mountain area would not be what it is today. (Image credits wikimedia commons)

09.01.2022 NEW BOOK "Kindred: A Cradle Mountain Love Story" about Gustav & Kate Weindorfer of Cradle Mountain. We were so fortunate to have met with well-known author and national journalist, KATE LEGGE, at her full-house book launch that was held back on 5th March down in Hobart. !! We couldnt have missed that for quids !!... Having just read this heartfelt book, that imparts the sense and feeling that you are RIGHT THERE accompanying the characters every step of their journey; privy to their honeymoon camping on Mt Roland; sitting at the dinner table inside Waldheim; agasp with wonder standing at the top of the world on the summit of Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff and others; rubbing shoulders with the "giants" of Quaile from Wilmot, and the many prominent scientists, botanists and intellectuals of the time who journeyed from afar to Waldheim to marvel at the uniqueness of the "veritable El Dorado for the botanist" ... we can tell you to put it on your list of MUST-READs. You will share in the history, life, love, dedication, hardships, loss, vision and commitment that took the lifetime of Kate and Gustav and their learned friends to birth the infant of the Scenic Reserve, carry it on through its adolescent years as a National Park, and mature into the adult of the grandest order: a World Heritage Wilderness Area that is Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair - ranked the highest in the entire world, along with only one other, meeting a record seven of the ten criteria for qualification as World Heritage, when only one will qualify. This world acclaimed Wilderness is literally on our door-step. Along with the historical connection with Wilmot, these will be amongst the celebrations to be had during the 2019 Weindorfer Memorial, now held at the little hamlet of Wilmot on 5th May, the anniversary of his passing. Previously held at Cradle Mountain annually on the 1st January, (this date being an Austrian tradition). 07.01.2022 We love this wonderful, old, silent film by by Frederick Smithies. Thanks for publishing it, Libraries Tasmania. It begins in the main street of Wilmot, outside the original Wilmot Hall. At the 45 second mark sees Bob Quaile, who ran the service of transporting visitors to and from Cradle Mountain. He is loading up the cart with travellers for the long journey on a very rough dirt track...
05.01.2022 Have you wondered why the memorial for Gustav Weindorfer was always held on the 1st January? ... because it is an Austrian tradition. Gustavs sister, Rosa, sent candles and Edelweiss flowers for her brothers graveside, asking if it could be commemorated sometime between Christmas and New Year. Gustavs friends chose New Years Day. And so it was. Rosa continued to send the candles and flowers annually for many years and hence the memorial perpetuated.
04.01.2022 Fascinating stories -- listen to Kate Legge describing the life and times of Gustav and Kate Weindorfer.
04.01.2022 Like, share and donate :) to support the 2019 Weindorfer Memorial Event
04.01.2022 This building was built for the Connell family, Lionel, Maggie and children - possibly by them? We'd like to know ... ? The Connell's were caretakers of Waldheim, hosting its guests since Gustav's passing. Gustav's gravesite being very nearby and a little further to the left of this pohotgraph; Waldheim being further to the left again. The stone arrangement, top left, has a direction dial placed on top marking many landmarks.... In more recent years this building had been used as a museum. These days it is not used for anything that we know of. We would love to know any further information - do you have some stories? Photo Credit - Garth Smith Photography - thanks :)
