22.01.2022 THIS WEEK, Parliament will vote on an attempt to amend the Migration Act, effectively allowing mobile phones to be confiscated from refugees and people seeking asylum in immigration detention facilities. Mobile phones are a lifeline. Without them, we wouldn't know the story of the family from Biloela, that people are being forced to sleep four to a room in a pandemic or that basic necessities like soap aren't available.... Mobile phones are a lifeline for refugees and people seeking asylum. Our friends at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), among others, have put together some helpful resources to help you to contact your local representatives and urge them to vote against this bill. Can you sign the petition or make contact today? Write done in the comments below to encourage others to join you in taking action! #NoPhoneNoLife #NoPhonesNoLife

21.01.2022 This is a must read from Refugee Voices Founder and Co-Director Alyas Taqawi! I remember the faces of the people who greeted me and asked me if I was okay. They showed me empathy, care and kindness. The policy of the government at the time was human and human-loving. This was the Australia that people had come to love. That is how people around the world viewed the country, but not now.... Its up to us to #SayWelcome to those new to calling Australia home. We can build a welcoming and inclusive future. #RefugeeVoices #StrongerTogether
19.01.2022 Today is #RUOK Day - and so its fitting that we focus on the mental health impacts of immigration detention, and demand better from our leaders. At the very least, food provided to people in detention should be culturally and religiously appropriate. The deteriorating mental and physical health of people in detention is alarming. We join thousands of others across Australia calling on our leaders to release people from immigration detention so they access medical treatment... and social support in order to recover and practice their religion freely. #SayWelcome #FreedomFromDetention
19.01.2022 Survey invitation from Dr Kathomi Gatwiri PhD at Southern Cross University Are you a self-identifying Indigenous or Black person from any other background in Australia who would like to share your reflections on the significance of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the impact it has had in your life? We invite you to complete an anonymous survey that asks you to reflect on the experiences of being an Indigenous or black person in Australia in the Era of the #BlackLiv...esMatter movement. 18.01.2022 Music is a tool for preserving my sense of personhood, it is so I dont forget that I am a human being. Music is the language with which I can communication with the Australian people in a deep and meaningful way. My message is nothing more than the fact that we should love each other. Music that Moz, Farhad, Kazem and others have shared with us is a radical act of resistance - its allowed us an insight into their lives and their hope for a brighter future. #SayWelcome ... #FreedomOnlyFreedom See more
18.01.2022 Yesterday marked another (unfortunately sad) milestone for Nades, Priya, Kopika and Tharnicaa. 1000 days since they were removed from a community in Biloela who desperately want them to come home. 18.01.2022 Times of crisis often reveal our character. We can choose to give in to the politics of fear and division, or we can champion our values of belonging and unity. 18.01.2022 URGENT ACTION We know that phones are a lifeline for people in immigration detention. Senator Lambie has posted a survey asking how she should vote on the mobile phone ban bill. 18.01.2022 If youre in #Adelaide, dont miss the #StrongerTogether exhibition at Sparkke at the Whitmore, launching this week! Heres a sneak preview of what you can expect: introducing Rumbie and a snippet of her story - Three countries, two continents, one girl. I have always wanted to be a global citizen. Outlier? Adventurer? Simply put, a bad economic situation has forced most of my countrymen to move to other countries and my family is no exception. However, in the journey far a...way from home I have always yearned to belong. I came to the realisation that I could, by creating the sense of belonging for others. Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, when I was 13, my family moved to South Africa for better work opportunities. I had to stay back home in Zimbabwe with my grandmother to finish my high school studies. I later joined them.... When I was in South Africa...not only did I feel like a foreigner, I found it hard to define where home was. One of my siblings thought I was a visitor in my own mothers house I am a Zimbabwean. I live in Australia. I am a significant part of a whole thing whatever thing that I make it to be. I am the integral part to the story of me. And the story of me includes all those that understand wanting to belong and creating an environment where others feel they belong. Being in Australia, getting involved in the Welcoming Futures created those opportunities and nurtured that sense for me. #StrongerTogether2020 #SayWelcome Capture the Present Photography

17.01.2022 Dear Welcoming community, we asked for your help last week, and you responded with incredible generosity, thank you! We have just been advised that another group of people seeking asylum in Community Detention will soon be in the same situation - given just three weeks to find work (after being denied the right to work for years) and a new place to live in the middle of a global pandemic! Again, were calling on our community to help us ensure theyre able to find safe, sec...ure housing and are supported to find employment. How can you help? provide a financial donation to help us to keep these families from destitution; offer a room or home for someone to stay in; donate non-perishable food items to help us stock the pantry; share this post! The kindness and generosity of our community is overwhelming - you respond with care, love and welcome over and over again. We'd love your support once more - please share with your networks, partnering with us to give hope in a seemingly hopeless situation! #SayWelcome #StrongerTogether

16.01.2022 The generosity of our community is inspiring! Today, so many of these bottles of dishwashing liquid will be joining fresh produce from OzHarvestSA and Foodbank SA, alongside pantry staples kindly donated from you, our supporters, to be delivered directly into the homes of people on temporary visas across Adelaide by our amazing volunteer team. These bottles themselves tell a story of hope and resilience; donated by a couple who just weeks ago were in the anxiety-inducing sit...uation of being forced to find employment and housing amidst a pandemic with little to no support. Today, they are donating the little they can to show others like them that there is a brighter future ahead. A visible demonstration that we are indeed #StrongerTogether. #SayWelcome

16.01.2022 Through mobile phones, Behrouz Boochani shared his groundbreaking book, Moz Azimitabar shared his incredible music - and so many more shared their lives with us. If it wasnt for access to these phones in immigration detention facilities, we wouldnt have been able to witness the conditions refugees and people seeking asylum face inside. Access to communication is a basic right. ... There are moves to take away this right. Their phones are a lifeline to legal advice, friendship and support, family connection, medical support, and so much more. Reject the mobile phone bill. #NoPhoneNoLife from Craig Foster

14.01.2022 Stronger Together launches on the 25th September! This powerful series of stories showcase these young leaders from diverse backgrounds who are part of the Welcoming Futures Program, a project which brings young people from diverse communities together in light of developing cohesion, understanding and knowledge. Thanks to Capture the Present Photography for these shots and an insight into Sophies story - come along to Sparkke at the Whitmore to delve deeper! As an indiv...idual, I see myself as a citizen of the world because although I introduce myself as Congolese, I have little knowledge of how the place looks or feels. I was born in Congo, but raised elsewhere. The place I once called home (the Camp) does not exist anymore and all my precious childhood memories of the place are with me, but I cannot visit the place even if I wanted to. And of course, I have spent most of my life here in South Australia but I still miss home. Therefore, I cannot exclude either one of the places I have lived because that would mean erasing the memories I have of the place; which is impossible. Living in Australia means a lot to me. I am extremely grateful for what this beautiful country has done for me. Not only has it provided a home for me, this country with all the opportunities that came with it has enabled me a chance to grow into an independent woman. It is just sad how it came to be that I live in this place that I now love, because I was displaced from my birth country without consent. #StrongerTogether #SayWelcome #WelcomingFutures

11.01.2022 Wondering why were so opposed to the amendment to the Migration Act thats before Parliament this week? This article from Amnesty International Australias Graham Thom explains how phones are a lifeline for people in immigration detention. "The effect this amendment will have on those detained cannot be emphasised enough. The anguish these people endure is huge. Many have been locked up for years and have severe mental health issues as a consequence. The reason is lack of h...ope that their detention will ever end and they believe they will never be able to reunite with their families. "Adding to their trauma is the significant curtailment of all visiting schedules due COVID-19. The only way to communicate with loved ones and lawyers is through the use of mobile phones." #NoPhoneNoLife #NoPhonesNoLife

09.01.2022 Migrant workers, refugees, people seeking asylum and international students are part of the heartbeat of our local communities. As an organisation committed to advancing an Australia where people of all backgrounds have equal opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive Welcoming Australia strongly believes that nobody should be left behind regardless of the circumstance or crisis at h...and. The question we must continue to consider, and seek to answer, is ‘what should inclusive recovery involve in diverse communities, and how can governments facilitate that recovery?’ #NobodyLeftBehind #SayWelcome #StrongerTogether
09.01.2022 A note from our CEO, Aleem Ali: It's no secret that racism follows a recession. As a species, we are hard-wired to be aware of and respond to threats. However, fear diminishes our capacity to distinguish perception from reality. We default to needing someone to blame. Preferably, someone who isn't known to us or in our immediate circle. The question is, what might we do about it? How can we reverse the tendency to exclude and 'other' people when faced with challenging situat...ions and scarcity? 'Stronger together', 'unity' and 'everyone belongs' serve as platitudes if we fail to translate those statements into action and positive change. - When everyone belongs, we seek less to blame and more to include and protect. - When everyone belongs, we defend and support the most vulnerable people in our society. - When everyone belongs, we shy away from grandstanding and point-scoring. - When everyone belongs, it's not about 'me', 'I' or 'them' - it's about 'us'. - When everyone belongs, we smile at, and acknowledge, newcomers and visitors to our communities. - When everyone belongs, we actively seek out opportunities to amplify the voices that rarely have a chance to be heard. - When everyone belongs, we call out the best in people and encourage them to be part of a bigger vision and a better tomorrow. If ever there was a time to engage in this work, it is now. Amid an ongoing health crisis, we have a profound opportunity to strengthen our resolve to advance communities where everyone can belong.I'm proud to be part of a growing movement that demonstrates this resolve every day. 07.01.2022 As if we werent humans: The abandonment of temporary migrants in Australia during COVID-19 is the latest report from UNSW Law Associate Professor Bassina Farbenblum and UTS Law Associate Professor Laurie Berg; co-directors of The Migrant Worker Justice Initiative. This sobering, but necessary, report is a timely reminder that a COVID19 response must ensure that nobody is left behind. A nationwide survey of more than 6000 international students and other temporary migrants ...conducted in July 2020 found that 70% lost all or most of their work during the pandemic. Thousands, like those we support through the Welcoming Centre, have been left unable to pay for food and rent. This report puts forward recommendations to address the critical humanitarian need identified, and to repair the immediate and longer-term damage caused by Australias exclusion of these integral members of our community and workforce. #InThisTogether #NobodyLeftBehind
