19.01.2022 The Covid19 outbreak in Sydney is an important lesson for us here in the Dubbo Region. To be frank, we are getting too complacent and not being strict enough on... ourselves when it comes to social distancing, hand washing/sanitising and logging in our details to venues visited. Dubbo cannot afford a lockdown like they have done in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The reality is if we end up with an outbreak in Dubbo, the State Government will lock our community down. It will decimate our economy, hurt our businesses and put a lot of stress on our families. As Mayor, I cannot emphasise this enough. We must re-double our efforts.

18.01.2022 IMPORTANT Concerns for HEALTH CARE - WELLINGTON Concerned about the state of health services in town, Wellington Health Council Chair Pip Smith has organised a ...PUBLIC MEETING to address a shortage of doctors at the hospital and local medical centres. Mrs Smith has discussed the matter with the Western NSW Local Health District, members of parliament and local GPs along with community stakeholders. The pressure that is on our hospital staff is enormous without 24-hour VMO coverage and not having reliable telehealth available, and with that, the support for our registered nurses who would be dealing with telehealth, she said. The other concern is primary health care and what Mrs Smith describes as the instability of GP appointments, with both Swift St Medical Centre and Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service experiencing a decrease in medical staff in recent months. Mrs Smith said Wellington’s expanding energy sector, aged care, correctional facilities and increasing transient population has put greater emphasis on local health services. Wellington is very unique and cannot be compared to most small rural towns due to our diverse population it is very complex, she said. This has a ripple effect, placing stress and strain on our local doctors’ surgeries like WACHS and Swift Street. This eventually affects all of our local and community services. As vice president of the local CWA branch, Mrs Smith recently distributed a survey with a view to informing the CWA’s submission to the NSW parliamentary enquiry into the management of health care delivery and access to health and hospital services in rural, regional and remote NSW. I thought the CWA survey was timely given the situation of lack of GPs and VMOs in Western NSW, Mrs Smith explained. For decades, the CWA of NSW has been at the forefront of lobbying for better health service in the bush. If we can submit our thoughts and concerns as a community of how we would like to have a new model developed for Wellington Hospital it may be a big ask BUT if we do not try and do not speak, IT WILL not happen. The aim of the public gathering is to inform townspeople of the urgent need to address the problem. We decided we would call a town meeting as I am not sure the community quite understands the situation, Mrs Smith said. The idea is to tell the people of Wellington the situation of our hospital and lack of VMOs then continue to follow and pursue this matter with Western Area Health and the State Government. Mrs Smith is urging residents to become involved and support health care in the local area. We need to work together as a community to achieve the best for Wellington and our whole community, she said. This is an opportunity to get our concerns in front of the NSW Parliament. We need to bring about a change and together I know we can. You may not use our hospital BUT you must know of someone - a friend or family member - who has and will need to use it the future. With investment and change in town, Mrs Smith believes this issue has really emerged in the past decade. The situation has been coming for the last 10 years, in particular the last four years. It has been a long time coming. A spokesperson for the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) said they are committed to providing doctor coverage 24/7 at Wellington Health Service. The district is currently implementing a more networked approach between Dubbo Base and Wellington Hospitals to ensure medical coverage into the future. We strongly support the efforts of the Western NSW Primary Health Network to attract and recruit GPs to the local community. For more information about the enquiry, visit https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/committees/inquiries/ To complete the survey, www.cwaofnsw.org.au/healthservices A community meeting will be held at 6pm on Tuesday, November 24 at Wellington Civic Centre. Residents from Wellington and surrounds are urged to attend. Wellington Health Council Chair Pip Smith.
