22.01.2022 Education Minister Dan Tehan today confirmed JobKeeper payments for childcare workers will end on July 20, and Australias free childcare program will be wound up on July 12.

21.01.2022 Superannuation In the 2019-20 budget, the government announced they would further relax the work tests for super contributions. This will mean that from July 1, those aged 65 and 66 will be allowed to make voluntary concessional and non-concessional superannuation contributions without meeting the work test. The bring forward of up to three years of non-concessional contributions rule will also be lifted to 67 on that date and those up to the age of 75 will be able to make s...pouse contributions. It will allow older Aussies more scope to make contributions to their superannuation, even if they are already retired, and give older Australians greater flexibility to save for retirement.

13.01.2022 Federal Governments New $25,000 HomeBuilder scheme. ... Last night, Scott Morrison announced the new HomeBuilder scheme to help Australians keep their home building or renovation dream alive "Twenty-five thousand dollars to support those Australians whose dream it was to build their home or to do that big renovation," Mr Morrison said. What you need to know about the HomeBuilder $25,000 stimulus: Single applicants must be earning $125,000 or less based off their 2018 / 2019 tax return Couples must have a combined income of less than $200,000 based on their 2018 / 2019 tax return. The stimulus will only be offered for any building contracts entered into between 4 June 2020 and 31 December 2020 You must be aged 18 years or older, an Australian citizen and be an individual, not a company or trust. The grant is for new home builds valued up to $750,000 (including land), or renovations between $150,000 and $750,000 that will result in the property being worth under $1.5 million. The new $25,000 grant is on top of State and Territory First Home Owner Grant programs, stamp duty concessions and other grant schemes, as well as the Commonwealths First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and First Home Super Saver Scheme.

11.01.2022 DEPRECIATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES There is a limit to the value that can be depreciated, which is $57,581 for 2019-20 and $59,136 for 2020-21 (unless the vehicle has a load capacity of more than one tonne or nine passengers, which allows a full cost depreciation). For a small business using the simplified depreciation rules, an eligible new vehicle can be added to the small business pool, deducting an amount equal to 57.5% (rather than 15%) of the business portion of the vehicle... in the year it is added to the pool. If the less than $500 million turnover entity does not use simplified depreciation, they can immediately deduct 50% of the cost of the vehicle (within limit) plus depreciate the balance. Anything over the limit is not covered.

The information covers the process for enrolment b...y an employer and how employees will nominate themselves to their employer. It also gives further information on how the decline in turnover test can be calculated in relation to the early part of the JobKeeper payment time period. In this video, John Jeffreys,Tax Counsel of Tax and Super Australia explains these issues. Watch out for other videos that Tax & Super Australia are creating on the JobKeeper program and the COVID-19 Federal Government Stimulus packages. #tax #taxandsuperaustralia

04.01.2022 The Australian Taxation Office has made a major change this year as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With countless Australians now working form home in a bid to slow the spread of the virus, the ATO is rolling out a new working from home shortcut to make it easier for people to claim deductions. The special new arrangement will allow people to claim a rate of 80 cents per hour for all their running expenses, instead of calculating costs for specific running expense...s as taxpayers would under normal circumstances Multiple people living in the same house can claim this new rate individually, and it is no longer a requirement to have a dedicated work from home area in order to claim. Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said the new shortcut method which will be in place from March 1 to June 30 will make it easier for those who are working from home for the first time. The shortcut method provides a rate of 80 cents per hour and will only require you to keep a record of the number of hours worked from home, Ms Foat said. This recognises that many taxpayers are working from home for the first time and makes claiming a deduction much easier. Daniel Di Julio CPA ACA Principal

04.01.2022 Early access to super to manage the Coronavirus Crisis Over the weekend, the Federal Government announced a new stimulus package to help Australians financially through the worsening Coronavirus crisis. One of these measures is allowing some Australians to access up to $10,000 of their super tax free this financial year and $10,000 next financial year under a relaxation of the Financial Hardship rules.... Below we've prepared some information about what these measures mean. Who is eligible To apply for early release you must meet at least one of the following requirements: you are unemployed; or you are eligible to receive a job seeker payment, youth allowance for job seekers, parenting payment (including single and partnered payments), special benefit or farm household allowance; or on or after 1 January 2020 o you were made redundant; or o your working hours were reduced by 20% or more; or o if you are a sole trader - your business was suspended or there was a reduction in your turnover by 20% or more. How you can apply If you meet the eligibility for this release, you can apply to the ATO directly via the MyGov website. Once your application has been processed, the ATO will issue you and your super fund a determination. Your super fund should be able to process the payment without you needing to apply to them directly. If you plan to apply for this payment, we recommend you get in contact with your super fund as soon as possible to ensure they have your correct bank account details and proof of identity documentation. When you can apply The Government expects that you will be able to apply for early release of your super from mid April. What else you should know These are extraordinary measures in unprecedented times. Before applying to withdraw part of your super, you should keep the following in mind: Most super funds have experienced large falls in the last month, as share and bond markets have reacted to the Coronavirus crisis. By withdrawing part of your super now you will be 'crystallising' these losses and not allowing these to recover when markets begin to recover. Super is designed to fund your retirement. By withdrawing part of your super now, you may be compromising your retirement outcomes. The Government has announced a range of other initiatives to help individuals and businesses through the crisis, including expanding eligibility for income support payments and payments to businesses to encourage them to retain staff. These measures may help provide the extra cash flow you need without you needing to access your super. Details of all the Government Initiatives can be found on the Treasury Website. We're here to help Hopefully your current super fund can help you with any enquiries you might have. If however you are having problems simply reply to this email and we'll do our best to help.
