24.01.2022 Highlights from our presentation at The MHS Learning Network Conference in Brisbane. What is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)? Its a clinically-proven non-medication therapy that helps with low and anxious mood. It works on the principle that we as human beings tend to beat ourselves up over things. BUT in fact, it is 100% NORMAL to feel LOW or ANXIOUS when stressful stuff happens. This is how we have evolved to sense and escape danger. It is also 100% NORMAL to feel PHYS...ICALLY UNWELL when stressful stuff happens. This is just the body releasing adrenaline, making our heart pump faster and our muscles work harder so that we can escape threats. It is ok to feel like this when stressful stuff happens. BUT ITS NOT OK when these thoughts and physical reactions stop us from doing what we want to do in a day. So CBT is retraining ourselves to ACKNOWLEDGE BUT NOT TO ENGAGE with unhelpful thoughts and feelings. COGNITION is latin for thoughts so this part of the therapy is the retraining of our thoughts before they enter the downward spiral of nonstop negativity. The BEHAVIOURAL part of therapy is retraining our bodies to control the release of adrenaline to control our racing hearts, the sweats and shakes and the stomach tied in knots when we are low or anxious. So thats CBT in a nutshell..therapy to overcome overwhelming negative thoughts and uncontrolled physical reactions. For more information, see your doctor or psychotherapist. #wellnesssa #themhs2019 #brisbane #cbt #mentalhealth
18.01.2022 Favourite moment at The MHS Learning Network Conference 2019...taking a deep breath and being MINDFUL... Not dwelling on the past (the pile of paperwork I left at work from last week), not stressing over the future (the presentation were about to give to a bunch of people we havent met yet)...instead Im just focusing on clearing my mind, enjoying the moment and colouring in this giant colouring wall! Thanks Flourish Australia #themhs2019 #serenity #mindfulness #mentalhealth
16.01.2022 More highlights from our presentation at @themhsorg Conference in Brisbane this week. Here are our top tips for clinicians and support workers talking about Mental Health... 1) SHUT UP AND LISTEN . And that allowing ENOUGH TIME to shut up and listen is important. Remember, verbal history is everything in this area of health care where we dont have the luxury of scans and blood tests to assess .... 2) ACKNOWLEDGE that it is ok to feel the way someone is feeling, given what they are going through 3) REASSURE that feelings dont make someone weak or weird or a loser. Just that rhetorical and reassuring notion "if you had a mate that was the exact same age and gender as you, and was going through the exact same stress as you, would you not expect them to be FEELING THE EXACT SAME WAY???" 4) EDUCATE that it is NORMAL to feel LOW or ANXIOUS or even PHYSICALLY UNWELL (this is just the body doing its job and releasing adrenaline) when stressful things happen... This is the key though...and it is a VERY SUBTLE BUT IMPORTANT CONCEPT. While it is ok to feel low, anxious and physically unwell when stressful things happen, IT IS NOT OK for these feelings to STOP YOU FROM DOING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN A DAY!!! This is difference between ACKNOWLEDGING the negative thoughts and ENGAGING with them. It is just like passing someone you dont like and doesnt like you on a narrow sidewalk and choosing to nod politely and keep walking on rather than feeling like you have to stop and chat. Ackowledge but dont engage and remember...THERE IS ALWAYS PROFESSIONAL HELP AVAILABLE #wellnesssa #wellnesssapeaceofmind #mentalhealthawareness #endthestigma #themhs2019 #conference #brisbane #mentalhealth #therapy #psychology #health #wellness #wellbeing #doctor #socialwork #community #depression #anxiety #suicideprevention #mindfulness #rural_love #eyrepeninsula #portlincoln #southaustralia #team #themhs #recovery @ Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

13.01.2022 Proud to be giving rural South Australia a voice The Mental Health Services Learning Network - Themhs National Conference in Brisbane. Thanks to all the people affected by and fighting for mental health for sharing your inspiring and encouraging experiences and ideas. Were excited to put them to good use back home on the Eyre Peninsula. We have it pretty tough in Port Lincoln South Australia. The nearest mental health hospital is over several 100s of kms away, waitlists to s...ee a therapist can be over half a year long. Just like the big cities, we too have our share of employment, cultural, gender and drug and alcohol issues and yet, despite the fact that we are all Australian citizens, the standard of healthcare is SO DIFFERENT. Our message is pretty straight forward. We need to encourage each other to GET HELP EARLY . Because while its OK TO FEEL LOW OR ANXIOUS when stressful stuff happens (stuff the mental health stigma) it is NOT OK for these feelings to stop you from doing what you want to do in a day. Secondly, we ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER . Everybody across the mental health services has a role to play and COMMUNICATION, COOPERATION AND RESPECT is key. All of us deserve to feel safe and worthwhile, no matter what your age, gender, culture or postcode and Rural and Remote Australia is NO EXCEPTION! #wellnesssa #themhs2019 #conference #brisbane #mentalhealth #depression #anxiety #suicideawareness #health #therapy #wellness #wellbeing #medical #themhs #recovery #psychology #mindfulness #rural #southaustralia #portlincoln #eyrepeninsula #rural_love #respect #strong #survivor #community #socialwork #doctor #team
08.01.2022 Honoured to be guest speaking at the Lincoln Alive AGM and Suicide Prevention Meeting at the Port Lincoln Hotel in Port Lincoln, South Australia. Our message is simple folks... 1) Its ok to feel down or anxious when bad stuff happens...THATS NORMAL! 2) Its not ok though to feel so down or anxious that you cant do the stuff that youd normally want to do in a day...you dont deserve that and theres help available if things have got to that point! 3) Timely access to menta...l health care (or any kind of health care) should be available to ALL AUSTRALIANS ...NO MATTER WHAT YOUR POSTCODE IS! #wellnesssa #suicideprevention #portlincoln #eyrepeninsula #southaustralia #mentalhealth
