13.01.2022 TICK AWARENESS With Summer just around the corner it's important that you ensure your pets are kept up to date with their flea and tick prevention, especially during this time of the year. There are a few products available on the market both for cats and dogs in clinic if you are requiring some for your pet. Monthly or 3 monthly prevention is available for cats while there is monthly, 3 monthly and 6 monthly prevention available for dogs. ... Some symptoms which may occur if your dog or cat has a paralysis tick engorged on them may include: - unsteady or wobbly gait - change in meow or bark - heavy panting - vomiting may occur - paralysis It is important that if you see a tick on your pet to not remove it yourself unless you are aware of how to do so appropriately. By leaving the head burrowed into the pets skin this can still allow the toxin to be administered to your pet. If you notice any symptoms which may be associated with a paralysis tick it is important to get them to a vet as soon as possible so treatment can be started immediately. #wellpetvets #mountainsanimalhospital #tickawareness #tickprevention #keepuptodate

11.01.2022 Extreme heat warning Temperatures are set to soar again tomorrow and early in the week! Living in NSW means there’s lots of sun and fun, but also a few dangers for you and your furry friends to think about.... Check out some top tips below! HYDRATE Ensure your pets have access to plenty of cool, fresh water at all times. COOL OFF IN THE SHADE Make sure your pet has access to shade and, if possible, consider bringing them inside if you have air conditioning or a fan. WAIT TO WALK Avoid taking your dog for a walk during the middle of the day when temperatures peak. Remember: if you can’t leave your hand on the pavement for longer than 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pooch. Just like people, animals can hurt their feet on hot surfaces too! BE SUN SAFE Slip, slop, slap! Especially if your pet is white, as they have a higher risk of skin cancer. Make sure to pop on some doggy sunscreen or zinc if going out in the sun, and keep your cats indoors. CONSIDER FREEZING TREATS Letting your pets play with frozen ice cubes is a fun way to help them cool down. You can also freeze some treats overnight in a container of water and let your pets lick them free! Kibble and dry treats work best with this trick! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN THE CAR It can only take 6 minutes for a dog to die in a hot car. Never leave your pets unattended in a car! If you believe your pet is experiencing any health problems as a result of heat stress, please contact our Nepean Animal Hospital open 24/7 on 1300 WELLPET #heatwarning #hotweather #keepfuryfriendscool #mountainsanimalhopsital #nepeananimalhopsital #wellpetvets #australiansummer
