24.01.2022 There is no doubt that synthetic oxytocin has its place in maternity care, and can be instrumental in saving lives, but even the companies who develop this synthetic oxytocin state that it should not be used for routine inductions and augmentation of labour unless medically necessary. https://vickihobbs.com/medical-induction-methods-synthetic/

23.01.2022 The Rights of the Childbearing Woman anywhere in the world must be taken seriously, but for the purpose of being Australian and educating my local community I have put together some really important resources so that women have an easy reference point to go to and know that they do have rights, they can refuse treatment without recourse or shame and healthcare providers must be aware that a woman legally has the right to refuse consent and withdraw consent to medical treatments at any time. https://vickihobbs.com/your-rights-as-a-childbearing-woman/

22.01.2022 "In the last weeks of pregnancy, maternal antibodies are passed to the babyantibodies that will help fight infections in the first days and weeks of life. The baby gains weight and strength, stores iron, and develops more coordinated sucking and swallowing abilities. His lungs mature, and he stores brown fat that will help him maintain body temperature in the first days and weeks following birth. The maturing baby and the aging placenta trigger a prostaglandin increase that ...softens the cervix in readiness for effacement and dilatation. A rise in estrogen and a decrease in progesterone increase the uterine sensitivity to oxytocin. The baby moves down into the pelvis. Contractions in the last weeks may start the effacement and dilation of the cervix. A burst of energy helps pregnant women make final preparations, and insomnia prepares them for the start of round-the-clock parenting. The watchful waiting and the intense wanting of the big day to arrive are all part of nature's plan. When the baby, uterus, placenta, and hormones are ready, labor will start. Additionally, all that preparation sets the stage for an easier labor and a fully mature baby who is physiologically stable and able to breastfeed well right from the start." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1595289/ See more

21.01.2022 So following on from my previous podcast on Protecting Your Rights. When women experience what they consider to be a bad, difficult, disappointing or traumatic birth it is important for them to be acknowledged and her feelings validated because this just doesnt go away and they cant just get over it and move on. We know that the way a woman is treated during pregnancy, labour and birth can have a huge impact on her postpartum experience and so we have to protect the mother and her emotional health. A healthy mother makes a healthy baby. https://anchor.fm//Episode-15---Part-2---Protecting-Your-R

20.01.2022 I know in my Hypnobirthing Australia classes we discuss "birth preferences" instead of "birth plan" but I also add my own spin to that and say that we need to be using "active language" around the wants and needs of your birth and that is why I still use the term "birth plan" with my clients, because these are your "informed decisions" - and give a more powerful energy than just saying "I prefer" to do something. You have to own your choices and own your birth. Your birth pla...n is more powerful than you know. A birth plan is not a legal document, but it can be used in a court of law to show how the woman expected to be treated and supported by her care providers during her labour and birth and immediate postpartum period. The birth plan shows that a woman has done her research and understands normal, physiological birth, interventions, risks and benefits and consent. https://vickihobbs.com/your-birth-plan-is-more-powerful-th/ See more

16.01.2022 "Fear of litigation and perceived safety concerns and are among the key factors influencing the decision to perform a caesarean section, according to a major international literature review conducted by researchers at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2018//180730104859.htm

15.01.2022 Sometimes it can be really hard for your partner or birth support person who is a friend or family member to see you in pain during labour. Having the right people there can really make a difference with the outcome of your birth. Lets be clear here the most important person in that birthing suite is you! https://vickihobbs.com/role-partner-birth-support-people/

14.01.2022 A caesarean is major abdominal surgery, so you can expect to experience some level of pain afterwards. Your healthcare provider will ensure that you have medications to help you cope with the pain. It is important that you have support after you leave the hospital to ensure a speedy recovery. It can take anywhere between 6 to 10 weeks for your wound to heal. https://vickihobbs.com/self-care-and-healing-after-caesare/

08.01.2022 The Natural Alignment Plateau phrase was first used by Marjie Hathaway, who is an independent childbirth educator and author of several books, as well as a practitioner trainer for the Bradley Childbirth Method. She highlighted that it is not uncommon for women to get to a point in their labour where their cervix stops dilating. This usually happens before transition, but it can happen at any time, but it doesnt mean that the cervix is broken or has failed. https://vickihobbs.com/the-natural-alignment-plateau-stop-/

06.01.2022 The curse of the due date and the eviction notice for your baby is clearly etched in every womans mind after she has confirmation of her pregnancy. She marks that date on the calendar with excitement and shares this with all her family and friends. This is when her baby will come. Then as the days grow into months, her belly getting bigger and more noticeable, her hormones raging and hospital visits increasing, her due date starts looming and then we see the infiltration of... stress, anxiety and fear as her head is filled with comments about dead babies, the placenta failing, big baby, small pelvis, closed cervix, red hair, short height and time limits, staff shortages and the list of failures is endless. Why are women no longer allowed to enjoy their pregnancy and positively anticipate a normal, physiological birth? https://anchor.fm//Episode-17---The-Curse-Of-The-Due-Date-

06.01.2022 Over time women have forgotten that birth is a natural and normal process as they have been bombarded by the clinical and medical side of pregnancy and birth. Many times there is a lack of preparation and education and also the conditioning of our mind from a very young age that birth is painful because of other peoples experiences. We are also exposed to movies, images and TV shows that depict childbirth as a horrendous event that should be feared. Birth is about bringing... a new person into the world and this should be a celebration and a calm, happy experience. This is an opportunity for me to provide all women (pregnant or those contemplating pregnancy) and their partners or support people with information and education about positive pregnancy, labour and birth experiences. We need to go back to basics. http://www.wellwomansanctuary.com.au/membe/pregnancy-birth/ See more

Do you have a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) or do you book in for a repeat caesarean? How safe are either of those options and what are the benefits and risks? What questions do you need to ask your care providers? What tools and techniques can you use to give yourself the best chance of a vaginal birth next time? How can you prepare for a positive experi...ence no matter how you birth? Find out the answers to these questions and so much more at my VBAC - Back to Basic Birthing workshop on Sunday 9th February 2020 in Maylands.
