17.01.2022 Anyone get married at Bellavista in Mayfield? Bellavista was originally built in 1919 as the residence of David Baker, an American steel expert who was hired to be the first manager of BHP Steel Works. This beautiful 2-storey Edwardian style mansion was later home to other steelworks managers. Famous visitors include King Edward VIII, Queen Elizabeth II, Louis Mountbatten, Sir Douglas Mawson and Errol Flynn. It’s estimated that more than 2000 weddings have been held at BellavistaWow! 15.01.2022 Well, hasn't 2020 been a tricky year to navigate through! Being a small business owner myself, it has been a testing year full of hurdles and creative thinking to keep one step ahead of all the challenges that COVID-19 was throwing at us. During this time, I met lots of Mayfield residents who either needed some advice about their homes or the property market, while others just wanted to chat with someone to break the cycle of isolation. I have to say, while this year was tou...gh for many people, both financially and emotionally, it was great to see our community band together and support one another. What surprised me the most was the large number of people operating their own small business from their lounge room, garage, kitchen or small retail outlet. These ranged from services like therapists, designers, virtual personal assistants, accountants, architects, clothing retailers and more. With this in mind, I thought it would be great to give our much loved small business a shout-out to show our support and get the word out to the local community as it is surprising how many businesses are out there in Mayfield that many people wouldn't know existed. Show your support by: - Tagging your favourite local businesses as a comment below, along with a quick summary on what they do + why you love them. - If you see any awesome businesses from other peoples comments, follow them on their socials. - Show your support where you can by using their services/products. One new customer means a lot to a small business owner. And lastly, a quick shout-out to everyone who has supported my team this year. We're thankful for the support as it has kept us turning up for work each morning. So, BIG thanks Let's get the word out there guys and give a shout out to the local businesses we love

03.01.2022 Thanks to the reader who advised us that the Sid Fogg’s bus depot used to be where SuperStrike Bowling once was. We found this photo of a double decker bus fire back in the 1950s. Photo courtesy: University of Newcastle Doug Brown Collection.
