25.01.2022 What is the best strengthening exercise for my knee?!?! This is one of the top questions that we get in comments and DM’s. The truth is that the knee is actua...lly supported by the FOOT and the HIP. Yes, the knee has a bunch of muscles that flex and extend the knee, but that’s all they do. The quads, hamstrings, calves, etc don’t keep the knee in proper alignment, the hips and feet are the ones that keep the knee in alignment. Those need to be strengthened! Do 10 repetitions with a 5 second hold at the top. Make sure that your toes do not bend. Try to keep them straight as your press upward this will activate the muscles in the bottom of the feet and calves. The purpose of this exercise is to focus on strengthening the muscles in the feet while also being consciously aware of whether or not the knee is caving in. There are tons of muscles in the arch of the foot that can be strengthened to improve the arch of your foot and its ability to keep the knee aligned when walking, running, squatting, going up stairs, etc. The glutes and muscles surrounding the hip also play a role is keeping the knee in alignment, but that is not the focus of this video. If you are having any kind of knee, foot, hip, or back pain, pay attention to whether or not your feet, ankles, and/or knees are collapsing inward (valgus). If you are seeing this happen with your body, you can correct it over time! The first thing to do is to be aware of it. Secondly, just work on keeping everything straight and in line. There are hundreds of exercises to strengthen the hips and feet to help you keep the knee in alignment, but if you just simply work on being aware of your alignment in your daily movements, it will improve on its own.
