25.01.2022 We know there’s a few around, but we couldn’t resist starting our own Spoonville. Corner of Barkly & Clarke Streets West Footscray with the iconic @mike.makatron mural as a background #wefo #westfootscray #spoonvillemelbourne

24.01.2022 Happy Eid al-Adha to our Muslim neighbours. Presumably, Brett is reminding you to stay home in this video, and we're so sorry you can't celebrate the same way as usual. We hope you can feel socially and spiritually connected even when physically apart. For those unfamiliar, Eid is an Islamic religious festival, and traditionally a time of gathering for celebration, prayer and sharing of food. You can read more about its significance and the impact of current restrictions at https://www.sbs.com.au//eid-al-adha-is-very-different-for-

24.01.2022 As NAIDOC Week draws to a close we're looking forward to our next online Aboriginal story time. Taungurung woman Annette Sax will share story and song, including the Hokey Pokey in local language.

23.01.2022 People usually come to us but for now, we're going to them. Soul House worker Suzanne has been buzzing around to deliver around 40 food parcels to local residents each week. When we needed increased supplies to send out, the support really came through. Huge thanks to podatpid, 300 Blankets, SIMS IGA West Footscray Plus Liquor, Bharat Traders Indian Superstore Melbourne, City of Maribyrnong and Aldi Central West for your generous support. This time has really brought together the local community and we're so proud to be a part of it.

23.01.2022 This year's NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Celebrate NAIDOC Week by joining local singer-songwriter, Pitjantjantjara/Mirning man Bart Willoughby in ‘Live from the Porch’ a free event via Facebook, Thursday 12 November, 7pm 8pm.

20.01.2022 Kate came to the neighbourhood house to use our community childcare and 3-year-old activity group for her gorgeous twins. She joined our committee while wrangling four small children and has been such an amazing support. Thanks to Maidstone Community Centre for bringing us all more of her story!

19.01.2022 We've been working with council and other local organisations to deliver material aid and check-in with isolated community members. If you or someone you know is experiencing hardship due to COVID-19, get in touch with council's dedicated support team on 9688 0434 or email [email protected]

16.01.2022 A huge thank you to our community for your support of the Keeping safe in shared accommodation program. This partnership with Tenants Victoria delivered packs to people in 30 local rooming houses plus nearby caravan parks. Seddon Community Bank Branch generously donated $500 to purchase essential cleaning products and masks. A call out to the community through our local Wefolk Facebook group brought in the most encouraging load of masks, hand sanitiser and more. ... Thank you for helping people access the items they need, and helping them feel valued and connected to the community.

13.01.2022 LOCKDOWN JOYMAKING Facing another round of stay at home restrictions feels daunting so we've come up with a small, community-building activity. Tie a ribbon and help us add some community cheer to the walkway into our building. You might like to add a message, your name, or a drawing. Thanks to our generous models for their ribbon-tying demonstration! ... 539 Barkly Street West Footscray The building remains closed but the gates are reliably open 9am - 3pm Monday to Friday.

12.01.2022 Gosh, we're missing our room hirers. We're especially missing the sound of Sophie's voice and instruments drifting upstairs, along with the children in her classes. If you're looking for new ways to entertain your little ones at home we really recommend her online classes. Drop into a fun and engaging online music class at Leading Note. Classes start at just $10. https://leadingnote.com.au/leading-note-at-home/

10.01.2022 Our children’s services space looks like one giant invitation to play. Our staff have been busy preparing for our reopening today - we’ve been bursting to see all our families and to have this space filled with play again. We’re only open to existing families while we adjust to the new normal but if you’re interested in our 5-hour sessions keep an eye out for updates.

08.01.2022 "From fine amnesties, to boosting the prominence of digital offerings, to simply putting books in the post, libraries have drastically changed the way they operate to accommodate the massive social changes imposed by governments during the pandemic, often with heartwarming results." Libraries across the state have been working hard to support their members this year. Our own West Footscray Library and other City of Maribyrnong branch staff spent stage 3 restrictions packaging... books and delivering them to doorsteps. They've also turned to virtual storytimes and their usual online offerings have become more and more popular - look up the Borrow Box app if you haven't already. The arrival of books book packages has been an absolute highlight of the day for many of us and such a great encouragement. Although the librarians had to head home during stage four restrictions we want to acknowledge their important place in our community. https://www.theguardian.com//when-covid-closed-the-library

06.01.2022 How glorious are those blossoms? Cross Roads Community Garden volunteers have been just as hard at work during stage 4 restrictions. Gardens and their blossoms need constant tending!

06.01.2022 NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK This week we celebrated our regular volunteers with morning tea and it was so exciting to get together. There were reunions, donuts, gifts, and the most conversation the house has seen since March. Pictured are Ruth, Gary, Stacey, and Steve. Missing are Nicole and Atike who volunteer in our toy library. ... Our committee members are also volunteers and our Chairperson David was modestly behind the scenes over the other side of the room. Setting the direction of a community organisation is a massive task and never more so than over the last few months with the ground constantly shifting. Our committee have helped steer the course. Thank you to all our current volunteers and those who have volunteered over the past year. We literally could not do it without you.

05.01.2022 A big thank you to The Westsider for sharing our work during the COVID-19 lockdown. We've desperately missed hosting people at the neighbourhood house. While we've had to close our doors we have been fortunate to continue our connection with our regular visitors through weekly food drop-offs. The partnerships we've formed with local community-focused organisations have added more than we could have imagined. Click through to read more!
