Visas will be issued offshore to students wishing to study in Australia so they can make travel arrangements as soon as the borders open. 2. If you are studying online your online study hours count when applying for a post study visa. 4. Online students studying at Australian Universities are now allowed to apply for a graduate visa with working rights even if they are not in Australia. 5. 18.01.2022 Australia could be opening its borders to some Asian countries under a travel bubble arrangement. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated that talks are underway with countries such as Singapore and Japan about opening up quarantine-free travel. Diplomatic and Government sources say the change in restrictions could be months away, or in the case of another resurgence of the virus in Asia, even longer.... New Zealand is still not accepting travellers from Australia and says they won't until there are "full clear periods" of zero community transmission. The talks between Australia and Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore about an Australian-Asian travel bubble are going to be cautious, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. "The situation in Europe and the United States is awful, and obviously that presents great risks for people coming in from those parts of the world to Australia," he said. "But out of many parts of Asia, particularly in North Asia, places like Taiwan and I would also say [some] provinces of China, Singapore . . . 15.01.2022 Drop in points for Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) Family Sponsored) Unexpected news has been published on SkillSelect! The invitation points needed for the Family Sponsored stream of the subclass 491 have suddenly dropped. In the Invitation Round for June 2020 the minimum points for the subclass 491 under the family sponsored stream dropped to 70 points. By comparison the invitation round in May had the minimum points score for an invitation for th...e 491 as 100 points. What does this mean? The subclass 189 skilled independent visa, the subclass 190 skilled nominated visa and the subclass 491 skilled work regional (provisional) visa are what are known collectively as general skilled migration visas. The difference between the different subclasses is that the subclass 189 is something that you can apply for if you have a ‘good occupation’ and you don’t need anyone to sponsor / nominate you. The subclass 190 is a visa that you get nominated to apply for by one of the Australian states or territories if you meet their nomination requirements. Finally the subclass 491 is a temporary visa that has a pathway to PR, you can be nominated for this visa by a state or territory but you can also get sponsored for this visa by a family member as long as you have a ‘good occupation’. This recent drop in the number of points needed means that this could possibly be a viable visa option for someone who has a ‘good occupation’ (specifically an occupation on the Medium Long Term Strategic Skills List) and who has a family member living in a regional area where they will be happy to move to. The sponsoring family member living in regional Australia could be a parent, child, step-child, brother, sister, adoptive brother, adoptive sister, step-brother, step-sister, aunt, uncle, adoptive aunt, adoptive uncle, step-aunt, step-uncle, nephew, niece, adoptive nephew, adoptive niece, step-nephew, step-niece, grandparent or a first cousin. It may be that there are not many people left in Australia who fit in this category, hence the drop! 13.01.2022 Partner visa changes announced in the Federal Budget 8 October 2020 With the recent Federal Budget came the announcement of more changes to the Australian partner visa program. The long-awaited sponsorship application that was originally legislated back in 2018 but never implemented will come into effect sometime during the 2020-2021 financial year. This essentially means that there will be a sponsorship application before an application for a partner visa. This 'pre-applicat...ion' will focus on the sponsor and ensure that they do not have a substantive criminal history or have been convicted of domestic or sexual violence offenses. This measure is an expansion on previous legislation passed by the Federal government designed to ensure the safety of partner visa applicants from potential abuse by the hands of their sponsor. The other significant change that has been announced is that sponsors and partner visa applicants will need to demonstrate that they have functional English in order for the permanent partner visa to be granted. Where an applicant does not have functional English, they will be expected to undergo 500 hours of free English classes while they are the holder of the temporary partner visa. The government hopes that this measure will help promote social cohesion within Australia while detractors of the measure have claimed that it is a return to the infamous 'White Australia policy’. One piece of objectively good news from the budget is that there will be a one-off increase to the 2020-2021 allocation for partner visas in the 2020-2021 Migration Program with an additional 30,000 places (from 39,799 places to 72,300). Hopefully, this will make a bit of a dent in the massive queue for partner visas which has caused significant delays in processing with the average wait time for an outcome now stretching to more than two years.
