25.01.2022 The second weekend of seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island is here!

25.01.2022 Happy World Oceans Day everyone! Keep on doing great work for ocean and seagrass science and conservation! Cant wait to see you all in just *two* days! PS. Wont it be great to have a World SEAGRASS Day? Stay tuned to find out how you can help with this effort.

25.01.2022 WADDI would like to celebrate the life of a truley amazing citizen science star. It is with great sadness that we learn of Louise Benson's passing this week. Louise was one of our most treasured volunteers involved in monitoring the seagrass meadows around Rottnest Island. We loved having Louise on field trips, she was always so bubbly and up-beat. You could tell she really enjoyed dedicating her time for a worthwhile environmental cause. We will always appreciate Louise's contribution to WADDI, and our trips will not be the same without her. We will miss you and your quokka selfies Louise, and your love-hate relationship with Mabel Cove. May you now swim forever with the seagrasses and fishes.

24.01.2022 WADDI had the opportunity to present a poster on our seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island at the World Seagrass Conference in Singapore! Had a lot of interest and other attendees were happy to hear we had good involvement from volunteers. Our volunteers are AWESOME! Thanks guys!! #waddi #rottnestisland #seagrassmonitoring #rottnestconservationcommunity #ISBW13 #wsc2018

24.01.2022 Remembering Louise Benson. Louise and her partner Michael passed away after an accident in Portugal in June 2018. They will be missed and our sincere condolences go out the their families. Lou was our friend, volunteer and treasurer and her contribution to WADDI will always be remembered.... On the 3rd of August a group of Lou's friends will be heading to Rottnest Island to take part in a planting day in her memory. We will be planting and possibly installing jute matting in a blow out area near Rocky bay. This is to stabilise the sand as it is in an area that is exposed to southerly and northerly winds. We will be planting a number of different species in this area to help stabilise it. Participants will need to dress appropriately to conditions and bring a hat, drink bottle and lunch. The plan is as follows: 08:30 meet in front of dome 08:40 Bus out to site 12:00 Lunch 14:30 Bus back into settlement WADDI invites anyone who wishes to join us to get in touch for details. Thank you all.

24.01.2022 Very very excited!

24.01.2022 The second weekend of seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island was a huge success thanks to the dedicated efforts of the WADDI seagrass team! Thanks to Alicia Sutton, David Juszkiewicz, Stan Bowes, Anouk Marren, Kayla Rowe, Wendy Hutchinson and Michael Brooker. As ever, support from the Rottnest Island Authority, in particular Shane Kearney, Cassyanna Thomas and Helen Geers makes this work possible. It takes a team to make great things happen!

22.01.2022 WADDI has completed the 2017/2018 Rottnest Island seagrass monitoring season! A big thank you to WADDI members Kathy Murray, Georgia Hall, Denisse Fierro Arcos, Alicia Sutton and Paul Day, who participated in the third weekend of seagrass monitoring! The weather was the best it has ever been across the three days, which meant we had no set backs weather wise this season and could complete 10 bays in three weekends! We left for Rottnest early Saturday afternoon and, after a q...uick detour past the research station, we made our way to the southern end of Thomson Bay to try and bust out monitoring of a full bay. With three trained divers in the water, we were able to complete the site in just under 2 hours, measure several species of seagrass, and work up a big appetite for dinner! Green Island was on the cards first thing on Sunday morning. With 18 m of viz and hardly any wind and swell, two new WADDI members were successfully trained in seagrass monitoring methods. If only all of our new members could have such perfect wind and water conditions! After having a rest in the sun with the beautiful view of Green Island, and shovelling a couple of sandwiches down the hatch, we all loaded back into the buggies and set off to Stark Bay. Now with four trained divers in the water, we were done in no time, and successfully got Kathy and Denisse packed and ready for the afternoon ferry back to Fremantle- just in the nick of time! Settling in back at the research station with a traditional meal of pasta, Paul, Alicia and Georgia got stuck into measuring collected specimens of Amphibolis, where were always hoping to be the lucky one to pick a stem with the least amount of counting to do! On this weekend, we decided to stay on for Monday morning to finish of a site in the middle of Thomson Bay, which can be very busy with boats on the weekend! Armed with the Pink Flamingo, we were ready to be as visible as we could be in a busy bay so that we could complete our mission! The Pink Flamingo is now a fully fledged WADDI member and will be joining us every season. #waddi #seagrassmonitoring #amphibolis #posidonia #citizenscience #Garmin #SeatoSummit #RottnestIsland #greenrottnest Rottnest Island, Western Australia

15.01.2022 Another successful weekend of seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island! Big thanks to the team involved. We couldn't do this without you! #WADDI #RottnestIsland #seagrass #rottnestconservationcommunity Jade Herwig, Stan Bowes, David Juszkiewicz, Tahlia Newnham, Alicia Sutton, Paul Day

13.01.2022 WADDI member Paul Day was recently engaged by Wesley College in Perth to guide year 11 biology students on a snorkel adventure at Rottnest Island. During the 3 day field trip, which included observations of sand dune spatial succession, a quantitative assessment of the density and habitat preference of the introduced land snail Theba pisana and an introduction to community ecology, the students were immersed in the intertidal reef community at The Basin and the coral sanctuar...y zone at Parker Point. The group explored algae dominated sub-tidal reef, seagrass meadows, and the coral Pocillopora reef where they identified many different species of fishes, invertebrates and seagrasses. Engaging the students and introducing them to the marine communities at Rottnest Island will hopefully spark a keen interest in some to go on and study Marine Science. Here are a few of their photos.

12.01.2022 The WADDI team completed 3 sites over the weekend (14th-15th December), conducting monitoring of seagrass viability indicators inside the A-class Rottnest Island Marine Reserve. A big thank you to Rottnest Island Authority for supporting WADDI, volunteers, Alicia Sutton, Jade Herwig, Stan Bowes, Ivor Bruce, Anoukk Marren, Kayla Rowe and Paul Day and thanks to Murdoch University Dive Club.

11.01.2022 WADDI seagrass monitoring team, David, Jade, Paul, Alicia and Wendy. A fantastic weekend that ran smoothly. Thanks to RIA for their ongoing support. One site left to finish the season.

09.01.2022 Great work, @we_want_waddi our team loves following your efforts, keep up the great work and enthusiasm :) #seagrass #citizenscience Community Seagrass Initiative

09.01.2022 As the 2019-2020 seagrass monitoring season kicks off we will have our forever star Louise Benson in our thoughts.

09.01.2022 Seagrass meadows provide habitat for juvenile fish, small invertebrate animals and algae. They stabilise sediments and protect beaches from erosion. Seagrass meadows are highly productive and sequester large amounts of carbon. Very impressive for an underwater plant. They also provide a very nice environment to spend time swimming in and absolutely deserve our protection.

09.01.2022 WADDI uses Garmin etrex 10 gps inside the highly dependable Sea to Summit waterproof covers. This combination enables us to attach the gps to a dive flag on a float so that we can navigate to a position within seagrass meadows at Rottnest Island. Our citizen science seagrass monitoring program plays a critical role in the conservation and management of Rottnest Islands seagrass habitat. #waddi #seagrassmonitoring #amphibolis #posidonia #citizenscience #Garmin #SeatoSummit #RottnestIsland

08.01.2022 Time to dust off the quadrats, sharpen the pencils and get set for another season of seagrass monitoring with WADDI at Rottnest Island! (oh and we get to hang out with quokkas too!) To get this season rolling we have our AGM in November where new members can meet the team and chat about all things seagrass! #waddi #seagrass #seagrassmonitoring #posidonia #amphibolis #rottnestisland @rottnestconservationcommunity... #marinescience See more

08.01.2022 WADDI completes seagrass monitoring at the infamous Mabel Cove (historically a challenging site due to sea conditions). As previously found, we had very high densities of Amphibolis antarctica.

08.01.2022 WADDI is now in it's second year of seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island Western Australia. In partnership with Rottnest Island Authority and supported by Carijoa environmental consultants, WADDI conducts vital monitoring of seagrass health within the Rottnest Island Marine Reserve. WADDI engages passionate volunteer divers who are trained to conduct scientific measurements and collect data for analysis and reporting to help better understand the present and future health of Rottnest Islands inshore seagrass meadows. For our latest trip story written by WADDI volunteer David Juszkiewicz check out http://www.waddi.org.au/what-s-happening.html

07.01.2022 Congratulations to WADDI's very own Paul Day on picking up the Reef Life Survey's 2017 Scoresby Shepherd Award for outstanding voluntary contribution! Well done Paul.

03.01.2022 WADDI seagrass monitoring at Parker Point Sanctuary, Rottnest. The team has now completed 9 of the 10 monitoring sites visited annually.

03.01.2022 As soon as kids get interested in the beach it's a good time to start showing them the many wonders that can be found lying around in the sand. We were lucky to find an entire seagrass plant (Amphibolis antarctica) and we spent some time exploring the roots, rhizome, stems and leaves. Even though she could only understand a few words, she was able to recognise other seagrass wrack as "grass" after I explained how critical these underwater plants are to the coastal and marine environment. #seagrass #waddi #amphibolis #environmentalstewardship #education #nextgeneration

02.01.2022 WADDI members Alicia Sutton, Jade Herwig, Tahlia Newnham, Stan Bowes, David Juszkiewicz and Paul Day completed the second weekend of seagrass monitoring at Rottnest Island for the 2017-2018 season. A big thank you to Rottnest Island Authority for your in-kind support. Another successful weekend and congrats to Stan, Tahlia and Jade for completing the training in no time! Thank you team!

01.01.2022 Field trip and workshops at the 13th International Seagrass Biology Workshop in Singapore!
