16.01.2022 COVID-19 It's a concerning time out there right now... and many martial art schools are on the front lines for survival. It is a sad reality that martial arts d...o not enjoy the popularity they have in previous decades, and more specialised arts such as Classical Japanese Sword arts are smaller than most. So what does this mean? Well, it means that all of these schools will need your support and assistance in order to weather the current and coming stresses. Many schools have closed down classes for a short time... and all others are constantly monitoring the situation, ready to make a decision in an instant. For teachers, the challenge is quite difficult. They face the possibility of losing all students, and therefore the school itself, by the time this is over. Mt recommendation is to see what you can do to keep the school going when the classes are forced to temporarily close... see about offering online or email lessons in their place... send tips for home training... articles on the history of your art... and see about what you will need to do to keep the school in a position where it can re-open, whether that includes reduced fees, or a fund-raiser when the time comes. For students, this means keeping in contact with your school, and helping out wherever you can. It also, obviously, means that if you're feeling sick in any way, please refrain from attending, and ensure your instructor knows about why you're absent. The thing to remember, if you classes do close for a time, is that it will become vital to maintain your contact with the class, including continuing your training at home wherever possible... as it will become a new habit of not training if this extends for too long! Fortunately, some of the arts can easily be done solo (Iaido, Jodo), and others can be modified for solo practice (Kenjutsu, Jukendo, Naginata). Arts such as Kendo have a number of practices that can be maintained... obviously Shiai will need to wait until you can have training partners... but that is part of the challenge we must all rise to. Being a martial artist is about meeting these challenges, and rising above them. If we continue to support each other and our arts, I'm positive we will get through this!

06.01.2022 West Australian Kendo Renmei - a SAD day! Today, is the last Kendo training to be held at the Budokan Academy due to the sale of the property.... Budokan Academy was the founding dojo for the West Australian Kendo Renmei (WAKR) in 1985. The WAKR became an incorporated association in September 1986. It was the first incorporated Kendo Renmei in Australia, even prior to the AKR becoming an incorporated body. Members of the BA Kendo club will be absorbed into other Kendo clubs within WA. Our Iaido and Jodo clubs (also the founding clubs in WA) will take up residence, as of the 6th July, in a new dojo at the Southern River College gymnasium. Monday nights: 1830- 2000 will be Jodo followed by Iaido from 2000 till 2130. Wednesday night: 1830- 2000 will be Iaido followed by Jodo from 2000 till 2130. The last official Jodo and Iaido events at the old dojo will be on the 4th July (Jodo) and 5th July (Iaido). Iaido will finish off with a Yondan Shinsa (3 students) which will be the first ever Iaido Yondan Shinsa to be held in Australia without and input from Japanese sensei. At some point, I will update our website: www.budokan.com.au
