19.01.2022 CLUB MEMBER OF THE WEEK Congratulations to this week's Westies member of the week - Tyler Clement and Dejan Bouwhuis! Tyler and Dejan were chosen as this week's members of the week because of the helping hand they gave some of WARC's coaches in between training and uni. Without their help the 8+ that needed to be moved, rigged and packed away at Wesley, wouldn't have been ready in time - so thank you for your awesome work gentlemen! ... Here's a bit about Tyler (scroll for Dejan!): Tyler 19, used to go to Wesley (where he's currently coaching Year 9s) and is now studying sports science at UWA. His favourite classes are sports psychology and African drumming! (who knew, right?) His hobbies include running (he casually runs sub 4'30" kms for 21km....), and cooking. Tyler started rowing in Year 7 at Wesley and stuck with it because of all the people he's gotten to meet, cox, row with, coach and learn from - "many of whom have become my mates", he says. An interesting fact about Tyler is that he loves seeing live music, especially local bands, and has an entire collection of t-shirts from gigs he's been to! And now a bit about Dejan! Dejan is 19 years old and went to Trinity College. He's currently studying Actuarial Science at Curtin University while also working as a barista. Dejan started rowing in mid 2015 because, he says: "it's an exciting sport where anything can happen and I love the feeling of moving fast on the water either in a scull or big boats that go even faster". "I also enjoy rowing because of the community around it and the cafe culture and banter that comes with," he said. A weird fact about Dejan is that he has a self-proclaimed strange taste in music.... "such as having Taylor Swift's Love Story playing while doing intervals on the erg". Hmmm... i don't think it's right to qualify T Swizzle as strange. What IS strange is jamming out to Love Story while you're dying on the erg Thanks for all that you do guys, well done and well deserved!

17.01.2022 CLUB MEMBER OF THE WEEK Congratulations to this week's Westies member of the week Madi Hanlin! Madi Hanlin has been chosen by the WARC coaching staff as this week's member of the week because of her amazing work organising and running the club Sundowner.... Her initiative and her generosity went far from unnoticed and we're all extremely grateful here at Wests to have members like Madi who go above and beyond to make this club a community and a family. Thanks and well done Madi! Madi is 19 and is currently studying history at UWA, after which she plans to take on a law degree post grad. Madi, who went to MLC , spends most of her time rowing, debating or working at the Cottesloe General Store as a barrista. She started rowing in Year 9 and continued because it's literally her favourite way to start the day. "I really enjoy being at the club around positive and driven people," she says. FUN FACT: Madi admitted she's a "bit weird", confessing she listens to Harry Potter audio books while training on the erg. Also, she loves playing poker and is proud to say she can beat some of our other members, INCLUDING Andy Le
13.01.2022 What an amazing season it's been! Despite a rocky start - one where we weren't sure each time we went for a row if it could be our last (or if we were ever going to be able to hug our teammates again) - the 2020 club rowing season has been one for the books. Not only did each squad get through this year's challenges together, we also grew into a stronger, more close-knit family. At Westies, it doesn't matter how old you are, where you come from, how long you've rowed fo...r, or whether you're training to make new friends or solely to compete. There's room for everyone and this year, more than any other, has shown just how lucky we are to have one another. Take a trip down memory lane with us and check out some of the highlights of this season in the video below. We can't wait to see you back next year, and if you're new to Westies or rowing in general but are eager to give us/it a go, we can't wait to meet you!! See you soon! The WARC family

09.01.2022 It's #RUOKDay, a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation that could change a life. Today we're calling on Australians to learn what to say after R U OK? so they can keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. There's more to say after R U OK?... In a year when many of us have faced challenges we’re more likely than ever to hear No, I’m not OK. Learn how to listen, help them find support and better ways to manage the load, and how to check in and stay connected at www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask #theresmoretosay #ruokday #ruok Learn what to say when listening with an open mind Learn what to say when encouraging action Learn what to say when checking in Learn how to continue a conversation that could change a life. 08.01.2022 WARC member James Rao passed away on Sunday November 8. His passing has left us all devastated. The biggest thing you can do to support his family and friends now is by helping to preserve his memory. Please can you take the time to find old photos, screenshots of messages or videos and upload them to the google drive we have created at shorturl.at/fntuN.... Please also take the time to write down some memories of James, funny anecdotes, notes to James’ family, comments about James’ impact on your life or really just anything you remember of him fondly please email them to [email protected] or comment below. There is no such thing as too much or too little, so please upload and send through anything and everything you have. We will be collating these photos and stories for a commemorative photo book to be presented to James’ family. Thank you for contributing to this memorial project for a wonderful young man.
07.01.2022 : The West Australian Rowing Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of member James Rao on Sunday November 8. We join with all the club and wider WA rowing community in sharing our deepest sympathies with James’ family and offer our heartfelt condolences to them, along with his friends, crew mates and loved ones.... The 21-year-old was a much-loved and talented oarsman at WARC and will be remembered for his intellect and friendship. The WARC Committee is working to provide professional support to its coaches and members, while being supported by Rowing WA, Rowing Australia and the wider sporting network at this difficult time. WARC President, Darryl Salisbury said: "We are deeply shocked at James’ sudden passing, he was a much-loved member of our club". "There is a whole community of people, not only at WARC, but across our rowing family, who will be impacted by James’ passing and we will work together to support each other at this difficult time," Mr Salisbury said. "We extend our condolences to James’ family and friends at this most saddening of times".
05.01.2022 To our loyal Members and Supporters A massive thank you to the very generous members and supporters who got in before the end of the last financial year and supported our call for front deck funding. You raised a staggering $11,394 in less than 2 weeks towards our front deck, which is increasingly in desperate need of replacement for the safety of our members, café patrons and the general public. ... Vosy with endless support and advice from the Grumpies, has done an amazing job sourcing the timber and best quote for the installation this has given us a firm target of $40,000 to replace the deck. Given the cost to the State Government of COVID relief funding, State Heritage have informed us they cannot guarantee that there will be a 2020/21 Heritage Grants Program. We had hoped this grant would pay for half of the deck replacement. We are now forced to raise the full cost of replacement ourselves to ensure the safety of our members, and now putting out a further call to individuals and businesses who maybe thought about donating last time but didn’t, or know of others who can contribute. Everyone who walks into our club will set foot on one of your boards. Each donor (private or business) will be honoured with their name printed on an honour board. $250+ Bronze $500+ Silver $1000+ Gold $2500+ Platinum $5000+ Diamond For those who have generously donated already, you can top-up your donation to qualify for a higher level of recognition. Donations can be made to a fund setup under the Australian Sports Foundation, in place until the end of 2020 and all donations are tax deductable. To donate, click on this link: https://asf.org.au//west-austra/warc-clubhouse-development Many thanks, Darryl Salisbury, President West Australian Rowing Club Inc PO Box 6672 East Perth WA 6892 e: [email protected]
