25.01.2022 Springtime = matted and pelted dogs This time of year we see lots of dogs who may of missed their regular groom over winter, they may of been wearing a coat an...d the owner has neglected to brush the dogs hair regularly or the dogs have gone thru a moult and missed a groom. Matt’s are caused from dead hair not being brushed out and it gets tangled in the healthy hair. Knots start first then they turn to mats as the hair tangles up more. A pelted coat is where the Matt’s have gotten so thick that the hair can not be separated to see the skin. The worst is a compacted coat where the dead hair is so thick and it can not be separated. Usually a compacted coat happens to double coated breeds (huskies, chows, samoyeds, malamutes). Why is this a issue? - a healthy dog needs healthy skin and skin needs to breath. When the hair starts to Matt it pulls the skin tight. A pelted and compacted coat not only pulls the skin painfully tight but also suffocated the skin. I have seen severe bruising under bad matting and also terrible skin issues, the worse had open wounds that no one could see because of the tight pelted hair. Air and water can not get to the skin so washing can cause more issues as the wet hair never dries properly . When you arrive for your appointment we always assess your dogs and will discuss with you what is the most humane, non painful way of dealing with your dogs groom. Sometimes we can blow out the dead coat and open the Matts or compacted hair apart, so we can wash and brush the dog. But sometimes we can’t. Brushing out dead coat is painful and can take days but also damages the hair and skin. So the most humane solution is to shave the coat off. As we can only go under the Matts it means it will be short, on a compacted coat it is basically back to the skin although shaving double coated dogs is not recommended and we don’t like doing it- it is the most humane and safest way to deal with pelted and compacted coats. It is easy to prevent your dogs getting into a mess- brush them down to the skin weekly, get them professionally groomed every 4-8weeks, all year round, and don’t put dog jackets or coats on longer coated dogs. Your dogs health and welfare is our highest priority and we are here to help and assist in making your dogs comfortable and keeping them look their best

24.01.2022 We’d much prefer the ‘four-pawed’ variety. Happy Friday

24.01.2022 Concerned about ticks? Ticks are nasty little creatures that burrow their heads into the pet's skin for a blood meal. They can transmit diseases and toxins. The paralysis tick can be deadly and urgent veterinary care is needed if found on a dog or cat. Prevention consists of veterinary-approved tick prevention and regular skin checks, particularly after a walk. ... For advice on tick prevention products please contact the clinic to have a chat to one of our friendly staff.

22.01.2022 But aren’t they all? Happy Friday!

22.01.2022 It is important to make sure you use shampoos and conditioners especially formulated for your pet. Human products can often dry out the skin too much and cause more damage to sensitive skin.

21.01.2022 Happy Friday friends.

21.01.2022 Also at random times of the day? Happy Friday!

20.01.2022 And we thought they never knew the difference. Happy Friday

19.01.2022 Is your cat up to date with its vaccinations? Vaccines help protect against contagious, potentially fatal diseases. Even indoor cats need routine vaccinations in case they accidentally get out, visit boarding facilities, are introduced to other animals, or get ill and their immune system decreases. If you are not sure if your cat is up to date please contact the clinic.

18.01.2022 Could your pet be suffering from allergies? Unlike us, allergies in dogs show up as a skin problem. Scratching more than usual and licking of the paws and rubbing their face on the ground are signs of an allergy. ... If you think your pet has an allergy please contact the clinic to make an appointment or for more advice.

17.01.2022 Atopy is the number 1 cause of allergies that develop in dogs less than 3 years of age. It can affect any breed of dog, but is often seen in: Shar Peis, Fox Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Dalmatians, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Shih Tzus, West Highland White Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers.

17.01.2022 Food allergies are far less common than contact allergies in pets. Whilst all allergies can be present all year round we often see environmental allergies fluctuate with the seasons. Contact the clinic for more information or to make an appointment for your pet.

17.01.2022 Spring is a wonderful time of year, but unfortunately can cause a flare of skin irritation to those pets who suffer from allergies to seasonal environmental, parasitic or contact allergens. Whilst the allergen may be something that the skin comes in contact with rather than eaten, the right diet can help support the skin barrier to give extra resistance against these contact barriers. Please contact the clinic for more advice on what diet may help your pet, or to book an appointment.

16.01.2022 RATBAIT ALERT We have seen a lot of cases of rat bait ingestion recently as there is a rodent plague currently in the area. If you believe your pet has eaten the bait itself or affected mice or rats please call us immediately as we can make them vomit to try and remove the bulk of the bait from the system before clinical signs are seen. Rat bait causes uncontrollable bleeding as it binds to the vitamin K that is needed to clot the blood properly, and if untreated your p...et will die. Clinical signs may start with lethargy and inappetence and progress to include any signs of bleeding; these generally take 3-7 days from ingestion to be seen as the body uses its clotting factors up. Most commonly we see coughing but may also see bruising on the gums or skin, swollen joints or new lumps, blood in the faeces or urine. The effects of the bait can last for up to 4 weeks. The earlier the treatment often the better the outcome so please call us as soon as you are aware of ingestion! We can run a blood test to see if prophylactic treatment is indicated or if clinical signs are seen your pet may need a blood or plasma transfusion while the antidote has time to take effect. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT NO BAIT IS SAFE FOR PETS TO EAT DIRECTLY

16.01.2022 Make sure your best friend is protected.

16.01.2022 Happy first day of Spring!

16.01.2022 Whilst we don't expect to see many ticks within Westbrook town area itself, with tick areas being as close as Drayton and Hodgsonvale and expanding each year we recommend tick prevention for your pets. Watch out for ticks in long grass, woodlands and bush areas. These are perfect environments for ticks to lurk, waiting for their next meal to come walking by. Keep the parasite control on schedule and always check your pet's coat, between their toes, and in the ears after each walk.

02.01.2022 Allergies are a common cause of recurrent skin and ear problems seen in dogs. They can be caused by fleas , dust and pollen , or food . We can help determine the cause by a thorough allergy questionnaire, looking at the distribution of skin lesions, and/or running an elimination diet trial.... If your pet suffers from ongoing itchiness or skin problems, book an allergy consultation today.

02.01.2022 Ticks range in size from approximately 1mm when not fed up to 1cm when engorged. This can make it especially difficult if not impossible to find in your pets fur, even in short coats. The female tick drinks blood so that it can lay its eggs and can expand to 200 times its original size. They not only cause local irritation, but certain ticks can cause deadly paralysis. If you're not sure what ticks are in your area or what prevention options are available please contact the clinic for more information.
