25.01.2022 The salvias and lavender are in full bloom. Our volunteers got to take a bunch home from our recent working bee, though we left plenty for the bees! Salvia leucantha is a wonderful plant - super tough, long flowering, beautiful, and bee friendly . They're also very easy to grow from cuttings, so we might give that a go soon! #communitygarden #communitygarden #wbcg #westbrunswickcommunitygarden #melbournegarden #melbourne #urbangarden #urbanhorticulture

24.01.2022 Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides for you plant nerds ) is a great (and native) alternative to Spinach. The taste is very similar, but it holds its shape better when cooked and is arguably much easier to grow. Only minor downside is that you have to blanch it before eating it due to the oxalic acid, but don't let that put you off. You can easily blanch a large quantity in one go, then freeze it in blocks so it's ready to add to meals. This is growing in the Food Forest opposite the community garden entrance gate. Grab some and try it for yourself!

24.01.2022 Thanks Moreland City Council. Having the team from Working For Victoria on site this week has really helped us get on top of the weeds in the food forest. Weed matting & mulching still to come, but it has been great to work with such a helpful & friendly group.

13.01.2022 - Meet our members! - If you’re part of MCG, chances are you’ve already met our awesome Board president Libby. Libby first got involved with MCG 9 years ago, w...hen she was new to Melbourne and looking for a way to connect with her local community. She loves not only having a space to garden, but also the opportunity to chat with people that she otherwise wouldn’t have met. The gardens have also been great for my two kids, both have grown up with a third space that they feel safe and free (sometimes a little too free). They both have a strong feeling of connection to the area and have great skills in engaging different people in conversation. I currently work in an organisation supporting women in environment work. In entering this space I felt like community gardening wasn’t really part of the environment movement. I’ve been really pleased and surprised with how my view has changed and my understanding of community, working together, food security, carbon and biodiversity has grown. Now I’m excited by how much community gardening contributes to a more sustainable environment. Libby seems to have endless energy for our beloved community gardens, and as she’s currently renting says she is free of gardener’s guilt about spending more time in them than in her own garden! Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can meet at the gardens again and put our enthusiasm to good use. Hang in there members! We would love you to contribute: https://forms.gle/6d3oHnF8dvWkFYMG7

13.01.2022 Weeding may not be glamorous but it sure is satisfying! Here's a before and after of a little patch of the Food Forest next to the community garden, freshly weeded and mulched. Thank you to the local resident who stopped to help out (from a distance of course) - we love it when people say hi or give us a hand so don't be shy.

11.01.2022 This word cloud, based on our recent survey, shows the things that people love most about the garden...with the PEOPLE being the most frequently mentioned positive! No surprises there if you've met our members.

08.01.2022 Eggplants have been one of our best crops this year, and they are STILL going!

07.01.2022 During Melbourne's stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions, our gardens Pentridge Community Garden and West Brunswick Community Garden are allowed to stay open for the es...sential purpose of growing and harvesting food only. The gardens will not be open to visitors during this time. Members must book in a time slot if they wish to visit, and adhere to the safety protocols in place. Members, please check the members only Facebook groups or your emails for the booking link. Stay safe everybody, and we look forward to the day when we can gather in the garden again!
