22.01.2022 Bloody well done team! Since the first of July West Brunswick AFC members have donated 69 times, saving a whopping 207 lives in just three months. As if that isn’t reward enough, our club also donated more than any other club in the state during this challenge!! This also marks the end of our mini VAFA Blood Drive Comp, in which we faced off against MUWFC, Preston Bullants, and Brunswick FC across three rounds (and came out on top with three wins!). ... Through this initiative, we were able to encourage a huge amount of donations from the four clubs involved. As a bonus, each of the VAFA clubs finished in the top 10 in the state, and together, we saved an impressive 534 lives. Hopefully in 2021, we see even more VAFA clubs get on board, and more lives saved. Even though the Football Club Challenge is officially over, you can still register with our Australian Red Cross Lifeblood team and donate at any time, because it’s never a bad time to save lives!

22.01.2022 In 1970, a motion was passed by the WBAFC general committee to print a club-wide newsletter for distribution. As such, The Birdsnest was born. Since 1970, The Birdsnest has promoted countless sponsors, reported on thousands of matches, and landed in the homes of hundreds of club members. This year we celebrated the 50th year ‘in print’ with a new, glossier format to house the same stories you know and love, and our brand-new logo design.... In The Birdsnest, we love to celebrate our players and alumni, and In our latest edition the last for the year we applauded some of our members who have been kicking major goals off the field. (See more in our next post) A huge thank you to Stephen 'Ocker' Fyffe (a true veteran of The Birdsnest!), Ben Rodin and Beth Cook for working on the 2020 editions and the new design, which by all reports have been incredibly well received. The final 2020 edition does not disappoint, with some iconic flashbacks, club news and Birdsnest history to give us our much needed September footy fix in what would have been finals time. If you are aware of a birth / death / marriage or a notable achievement within our community, please send the details to [email protected] to be included in the next edition. Go to our website to read all the editions of the Birdsnest from this year, and email us to have all future editions delivered direct to your inbox!

20.01.2022 TFW footy’s back on at home tomorrow - @daniellebee at our Decade In Review ball before Lockdown 4.0

14.01.2022 We are hiring! WBAFC is seeking coaches to lead our Premier Women’s Reserve and Division 2 Men’s Reserve sides in 2021 and beyond. Both reserves teams at West Brunswick have a history of success: in 2019 (then playing in division 1) the men’s reserves made their eighth consecutive finals appearance, while the women’s reserves team won the premiership for the second year in a row. ... At West Brunswick, we espouse a ‘one club’ culture, and are looking for coaches who are committed to working with the club committee, and all men’s and women’s coaches to promote a positive and unified club. The successful candidates will receive support to achieve their individual and club coaching goals through certification and ongoing development, while working alongside our senior coaches, who each have a wealth of experience and success as both players, and coaches. To read the full position description, please go to our website wbafc.com.au If you would like to join a progressive club that’s on the up, please email a cover letter and resume outlining your suitability for the role to president Beth Cook at [email protected]. Applications should include relevant coaching experience and references. All applications should be submitted by COB Friday the 23rd of October.

14.01.2022 ‘Well, we’ve been predicting this match-up since halfway through the year. The best defence will face off against the best attack’ (VAFA). Aside from the blustery conditions, it was almost the perfect day for football. The West Brunswick seniors were hoping to go back-to-back, coming in once again as the underdogs against Emmaus St Leos. After losing the toss, the ‘best defence’ managed to keep the Animals to just 2.2 for the quarter. Arguable having controlled the game i...n the first, despite being 7 points down at the change, the second term was an arm wrestle, with neither side proving dominant. With the wind, West put another two on the board, while our defence restricted the Animals to a solitary point. With only five goals kicked in the first half, the third quarter saw the ESL forwards break free to kick 5 goals and set up a 26 point lead at the end of the supposed premiership quarter. In the context of the game, this looked like an insurmountable lead. It certainly seemed as though ESL thought they had it in the bag. The Magpies faithful didn’t agree. Surrounded by supporters, Hamma compelled the group to give it everything they had in the 3 quarter huddle: There’s no more tomorrow, just another thirty minutes to play. West made little impact on the scoreboard in the first ten minutes and it seemed the game was slipping away until a Bill Irving goal gave West some hope. Back-to-back goals from Pickles put the Magpies within a kick. With five remaining, Bill took a monstrous mark and ‘kicked a mongrel punt’ to put West Brunswick in front. The next four minutes were tense, as players tried to get behind the ball. In the last 30 seconds, with a point the difference, the crowd held their breath as the Animals had a shot on goal that bounced along the scoring area and out as the siren sounded. VAFA wrote that West Brunswick ‘AGAIN made the impossible possible, restricting the highest scoring team to just the 3 points in the final quarter’ and taking out the win by a point. For the first time in the clubs history, West Brunswick had won both the reserve and senior premiership.

13.01.2022 Round 11 has kicked off! Check out who and where the Westies are this weekend. Go West!

10.01.2022 2015 Senior Premiership cont. 1. 2015 club president Anthony ‘Gibbo’ Gibson, holding baby Alistair, jogs up to receive his premiership medal. The 2015 granny was Gibbo’s final game for the club, and final game as president. 2. The boys are all smiles during presentation, including Evan Lloyd (bottom left), and Scott Hulm (centre) who both missed the 2014 premiership through injury. 3. Matt Holmes, throwing back to his modelling days... 4. The ressies and seniors celebrate together in the rooms after the historic double win 5. Coach and captain raise the premiership cup for the second year in a row 6. Joel Beer, Warrick ‘Waz’ Baker, Holma, and Bucks. 7. Xav Fowler, Jack Taylor, and Hamma 8. The players cheer on Hamma, the soon-to-be-named 2015 VAFA coach of the year. 9. President Gibbo, Life member Quidy, and Senior Captain Marto celebrate their back-to-back premierships 10. Not a bad year for Aaron ‘Bingle’ Thomson - D3 reserves premiership player (4 goals), D3 reserves VAFA leading goal kicker, and senior assistant premiership coach. #WBAFC4Lyf #WBAFCArchive

08.01.2022 Here’s a chance for the Westies to throw their support behind a fellow community footy club in the VAFA by taking a few minutes to sign this petition by the Albert Park Falcons Football & Netball Club The Falcons home ground is the most impacted oval in the Albert Park precinct due to the Formula One Grand Prix. Each year the club is forced to relocate as a stadium is put across half of their ground. For 12 weeks (February-May) they are moved to another oval, without faciliti...es, and without any guarantee of where we will be moved to. The petition is asking for some simple agreements to improve their situation and help them remain at their home ground and playing in the VAFA. Let’s help the Falcons hit 1000 signatures in the next 24 hours! https://www.change.org/p/lily-d-ambrosio-mp-give-the-albert

08.01.2022 With the end of financial year coming up this is a reminder that those who want to make tax deductible donations to the club can do so ahead of the June 30 cut-off. Tax-deductible donations can be made through our Australian Sports Foundation Development Fund at the link in bio. Donations in the past have enabled the club to break even, whilst being able to support those in the West Brunswick community who need it the most. ... We understand that times are tough, so please don’t think of this as pressure to give any more to the club than you already do. With all that in mind, any donation would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, don’t be shy, please hit us up. Stay well, stay safe, and go west.
