25.01.2022 ***RED ALERT RED ALERT*** BIRD NAPPING SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING! As spring approaches, one of the most common calls we receive at Wildlife Victoria are that ...of baby birds (aka fledglings), and understandably so! Many times, fledglings look as if they are in distress, what with their funny walk, their inability to fly properly, or, as some callers have commented, with ‘how pathetic and helpless they look!’ This is compounded by the fact that many fledglings may be similar in size and look to their parents, thus, appearing to be displaying abnormal behaviour for an ‘adult; or, if they are found in unsafe areas such as dog parks or roadsides. Luckily, there are a few tells to look out for! A good question to ask is, why is the bird not flying? Is there a physical injury, such as a hanging/lopsided wing, or a wound of some sort? If not, this may indicate it is still in the fledgling stage as many birds learn to fly from the ground up, building their chest muscles through rigorous exercise (aka looking pathetic and helpless!). Ok ok, so it might be a fledgling, but in that case should it be all alone? This is a trickier question, as the answer is usually yes and no. When the parent birds give the fledgling the boot from the nest, it is to enable them to start learning to be independent and begin building their chest muscles for full flight, as soon they will be full grown. This ‘tough love’ can be distressing, as the parents will often be undetectable, leaving the fledgling for hours at a time! However, they do return periodically to check in, feed, and tuck them away from predators at night. In these instances, it’s always good to monitor to fledgling from a distance, keeping an eye out for adult birds watching or flying above. The following Fledgling Fact-Sheet is a fantastic quick reference for some common species. It is always best to leave uninjured fledglings alone and resist feeding them (despite how helpless they may appear!), as, like any parents, birds just want what’s best for their children! Nonetheless, if you are unsure, our operators are always just a phone call away and are happy to help identify if intervention is needed. Find our helpful Fledgling Fact-Sheet on our website under Wildlife Information.
24.01.2022 *CAT ADOPTION* Our foster cats, Bobbi and Nigel- around 1.5 years old, are looking for their forever homes. They are tied at the hip (code for obsessed with eac...h other) and must be adopted together. There is some urgency due to residential construction next door (jackhammering ugh). Nigel is active, highly curious and adventurous. He’s prone to keeping himself entertained in the funniest ways, and will play all day if you gave him the time! The kitten vibes in him are still going strong. Bobbi is FIV+ but is otherwise in good health. He is more chill than Nigel, and a big purring fan of belly rubs (he has the best belly!). As his confidence has grown, he has however given Nigel a run for his money during play time. He especially loves a good wand toy chase. While both boys are timid and like to do things on their own terms, they still love being around us, waiting at our bedroom door patiently every morning and Bobbi sleeps at our feet as we work during the day. They are very placid and are not biters. When they are afraid, they retreat to their safe space. They are better suited to a house without young children and other animals. In the right home, we know their love of belly rubs, curiosity and playfulness will flourish, as it has in the short time they have been with their foster carers. These boys haven’t had an easy life, but they have come a big way in such a short time. Can you give them the love they are so desperately needing? Ps both cats are de-sexed, vaccinated, vet checked and microchipped. Source number: EE101467 Microchip numbers: 956-000-010-817-077 and 956-000-010-827-410 Adoption fee to be discussed with foster group.

23.01.2022 COVID-19 (updated 26.11.20) Our priority is the safety of our team, our clients and our patients.... We are maintaining business as normal but we are constantly reviewing advice from government authorities and the Australian Veterinary Association. There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be transmitted by or to domestic dogs and cats. We are frequently disinfecting our doors and surfaces and have increased our already high standard of hygiene at the clinic. To help us maintain normal service for our valued clients, we would request you to observe the following: 1a. Strictly only two people in the reception area at all times. We may ask you to wait outside or in your car, so please call ahead when you have arrived. 1b. Masks are a request when visiting our clinic. 1c. We will be conducting consultations in the regular consultation room. We ask you to respect the government recommended social distancing between yourself and our staff and other clients. 1.If required we will take your pet alone to the back treatment area and ask that you stay in the consultation room or reception at all times. 2. If you have been recently testest, feel unwell or have upper respiratory infection signs please reschedule your appointment. 3. We request that all transactions be cashless. 4. We encourage all our clients to use the hand sanitizer provided at the reception, especially before seeing our vet and before making payments. 5. If you are subject to self-isolation please cancel any appointments with us. 6. We ask that you call us once you have parked for your consultation and we will advise you when it is okay to come into the reception area. We are aiming to reduce the number of people and time spent in our reception area. If it’s busy we may ask you to wait in your car. 7. Strictly one human per animal, (exceptions for special circumstances). 8. If you need a repeat on standard medications, or some parasite prevention or food, we ask that you give us plenty of notice. 9. Unfortunately we will not be running Puppy Preschool until the new year. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know. Regards, The team at West Brunswick Vet

17.01.2022 COVID 19 update. As an essential service, we will always be here to see you and your animals when you need us. Regular COVID-19 restrictions are still in place such as mandatory masks and social distancing when inside the clinic. We would also ask that you please the use hand sanitizer before using the eftpos machines. ... 17.01.2022 Update 29.09.20 COVID19 protocols We are trading as usual in many ways with our appointments, surgeries, hospital facilities and pathology running as per normal.... We may ask that the consultation be contact- free, in this circumstance - We will still be delivering our usual high standard of care just from a distance. When you arrive at the clinic please call us from your car and let one of our nurses know that you are here. A nurse will then collect your pet from you, the vet will assess your pet inside and then call you to discuss and this is when you can ask any other questions If you are allowed in the clinic restrictions are still in place in regards to social distancing. Please keep 1.5m away from other clients and staff. Strickly one person per pet, as well as 2 people in the reception area at any given time. If you have been directed into a consulting room, we ask that you remain in the room until advised otherwise For appointments, when wearing a face mask you will be consulted by a vet directly in our consultation rooms. In some circumstances without you, your pet may be physically examined in our treatment area with our nurses and vets. The vet or nurse will then come back to the consulting room and notify you of any concerns or findings as well as treatment plans. If you wish to order ongoing medication or food please pre-order over the phone, so we can have your order ready to go prior to your arrival. Finally, we ask that if you are not feeling well, been asked to quarantine or recently been tested please do not come into the clinic, we are happy to have a chat over the phone and work out a way to help as best as we can. We take these measures to keep ourselves and our community safe. We hope you are all taking care and thank you for understanding.
