22.01.2022 The Exercises of Practical Life Dr Montessori observed children from a scientific point of view. By trial and error, she concluded that children’s development occurred naturally by doing purposeful work. Small children mimic their Carer, wanting to join in tasks of daily life. She created the Practical Life activities by uses familiar objects available to her and making it child size. This functional work is called ‘environmental experience’. It follows that the child can... only develop fully by means of experience in his environment. We call each experience ‘work’. The Absorbent Mind, Dr M. Montessori The tasks offered to the children from Practical Life have these essential skills at their core: Independence, Concentration, Co-ordination, Order, Social Awareness and Intellectual Development.

20.01.2022 The Sensorial Materials Geometric Solids These 3D shapes each have a mathematical name. The Montessori Approach is to give children the correct name for things, then link these names and shapes to those in the environment. This set includes (from left, back): cylinder, rectangular prism, ovoid, ellipsoid, sphere; front: square-based pyramid, triangle-based pyramid, cone, triangular prism, cube. When introducing the names of the solids to a child, three contrasting shapes ...are chosen. It is very common for a child to say, block, ball and icecream cone, when they see these shapes naturally, as this is what they have learnt. These shapes are uniformly blue and made of wood. The distinguishing quality is their shape. The mathematical language is given, cube, sphere, cone, and games played to reinforce the new language. When the child has understood these names, another game is introduced, search in the environment. This involves the child walking around the room to look for objects which are the shape of the blue solids. With older children, this can be extended with photos of 3D solids in the See more

06.01.2022 The Sensorial Materials Sound Cylinders This material is designed to begin the process of teaching the child to listen attentively. It consists of a set of twelve hollow wooden cylinders, six with red caps and six with blue. Each set of six appears identical except for the colour of its cap. Inside each set, six different substances (such as sand, dry rice or dried peas) create distinct sounds when the cylinder is shaken. The child arranges the cylinders into two sets according to the colour of their caps and attempts to match the identical pairs by sound alone. Once children can accomplish this, they can learn to grade them from the softest to loudest sound.
