23.01.2022 We've put to together a little bit of fun to celebrate the flattening of the curve! It's a reminder that Westcare is still open for business and keen to stay in touch with our loyal patients and friends. You may never have seen us like this before, but we've all had to make a few changes to get through the pandemic, haven't we?! As COVID restrictions begin to ease, here are our key messages:... - Keep up the social distancing, as the virus has not been eradicated - Keep washing your hands and sanitising - Do get in touch with your doctor if you are worried about your health - Don't delay check-ups for your ongoing medical conditions - Don't ignore new symptoms: your doctor is available today - Don't ignore your mental health, raise it with a GP you trust - Do get tested if you have symptoms of COVID - Telehealth and phone appointments with your GP are still available - But if you need to be seen at the centre, we will arrange that too! Stay safe, see you soon. https://youtu.be/L_914pOZ0l4

13.01.2022 Ready for the flu vaccine clinic!! Michele Geddes and Magda Janiak are all set to get you vaccinated for 2020. Our flu vaccine clinics have started, and if you are over 65 you may have already received an SMS. We are taking every precaution to avoid COVID-19, and social distancing applies inside and outside our medical centre. We will bring people in in small groups, keep you separate from others, and after your vaccine you will leave by another exit. ... Please don't form a queue at the front door -- wait in your car if possible until your appointment is called. Those eligible for government-funded flu vaccines (no cost to you) include: - Over 65 year olds - Under 5 year olds - People with chronic disease - Pregnant people - Aboriginal people Everyone else can also have a vaccine, and we are charging $15. Just call us for an appointment (03) 9747 5800. Please be patient if you can't get in straight away. We have started pretty early in the season and there is plenty of time to get your vaccine. We have ordered as many vaccines as we can get our hands on, but delivery dates are uncertain.

08.01.2022 E-Prescribing coming soon! Westcare Medical Centre will soon be ready to issue electronic prescriptions. Our doctors will be able to send the prescription to you as an SMS or an email that you can print at home. The pharmacist will dispense your medicine using the code, which they can scan from your phone screen. If there are repeats, the pharmacist will give you a new code for each supply.... This promises to be very convenient, especially if you are consulting the doctor by phone or video call. The doctors at Westcare are ready to go. Unfortunately not many pharmacies are dispensing electronic prescriptions yet, but we have been told most of them have the technology available. If you are interested in your prescription being electronic next time, please ask your doctor. It would also be a great idea if you could ask your pharmacist if they are ready for e-prescribing and encourage them to get on board! If you are not interested in e-prescribing, don’t worry we will still issue the usual printed prescriptions as well. Just let us know which you prefer.

07.01.2022 Today our staff are donning their craziest socks as part of ‘Crazy Socks 4 Docs’ day. An annual event, the first Friday in June is a day when we pause to reflect on the mental health of doctors and health professionals. A Beyond Blue study in 2013 sadly showed that doctors report substantially higher rates of psychological distress and suicidal thoughts compared to both the Australian population and other Australian professionals. 1 in 5 doctors have depression, 1 in 4 docto...rs have thought about suicide, and 1 in 50 have actually tried to end their life. Just like our patients, doctors are human too. We share the same vulnerabilities, and sadly the stigma around having a mental illness is still too strong in our community. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and challenging time for everyone. Some people are starting to feel depressed or anxious for the first time in their lives. Others who already had depression or an anxiety disorder have found isolation especially hard and are struggling right now. Feeling vulnerable and acknowledging that you need support is hard, but we’d like to remind you that as your GP, we are here to help you. Telehealth and phone appointments with your trusted GP are still available, and if we need to see you in person, we will organise to do that safely. In the meantime, here are a few tips that help to keep us all well. - Keep active! Research shows that daily physical activity helps to lift mood, decrease anxiety and improve sleep. - Eat well! A diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits and legumes helps to improve wellbeing. - Reduce alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Whilst often tempting as a coping strategy, alcohol and drugs change the way our brains and bodies work. They often make existing problems worse, and make recovery harder. - Prioritise getting enough sleep, and a good sleep! Avoid the use of devices in the bedroom, and for at least 30 minutes before bed. - Stay in touch with family and friends. Social connectivity is so important. Whilst this may be more difficult due to physical distancing at the moment, phone calls and video calls are a great way to stay connected. #crazysocks4docs

07.01.2022 We are open and available to assist you for all of your health care needs. Please phone the clinic on 03 9747 5800 to organise a telehealth consultation. Should you need to be seen face to face a time will be arranged by the Doctor during your telehealth consultation.

07.01.2022 Please wear a mask when you come to Westcare! From tomorrow it will be mandatory to wear a mask when you go out in public. We also ask you to do so when coming to the medical centre for care. It does not matter whether it is a surgical mask, or a homemade fabric one, or even one of the full-face plastic shields (they are not quite as safe but better than not wearing anything). ... Our doctors and staff have been wearing masks for some time. We are taking all the extra precautions to minimise the spread of COVID-19, and we hope you agree that the inconvenience is worth putting up with for now. Remember too that we are doing many of our consultations by telehealth (video link) or telephone so you can #stayathome. The medical centre is still open if you need to be examined or have a test or procedure, so don't hesitate to contact your doctor with questions or concerns.

01.01.2022 Now, more than ever, it’s important to keep your health and wellbeing on track. Your GPs are still here for you, so there’s no need to put off or miss medical appointments, or ignore symptoms during isolation. You will be able to have a phone or video appointment, and prescriptions can be sent to the pharmacy. Face-to-face appointments will still be recommended in some cases, but they can be done safely. There are rules about social distancing (such as sitting a safe distance apart), and extra strict cleaning measures are in place. You can do your bit by sticking to these rules, keeping your hands clean, and wearing a face mask if you’re asked to.
