25.01.2022 Creaking noises in our knees when we squat? Pain getting off the toilet? Swelling after a long day on our feet? These are often something we all experience in our knees with the fear that we are damaging our joints. BUT, often fear is what slows down our recovery as it may lead to stopping our usual exercise routines and deconditioning our leg muscles which can make things worse for our knee joint. . . Tune into @6pr882 today at 2pm to hear Chris discuss common knee injurie...s, knee facts and treatment ideas. . . If you have a niggling knee issue book online NOW or call reception on 6255 1990. . . . . #westcoasthealth #physiotherapy #injury #kneeinjury #rehabilitation #health @ West Coast Health and High Performance See more

23.01.2022 ****21 Health & Wellbeing Tips for 2021**** 1. Start off slow - The most important thing with getting started with anything is that you let your body ease into it. Our body needs to gradually respond to new exercise and then build up it’s tolerance. Too fast too soon will increase the risk of injury but we don’t want to be slack. 2. Stay Hydrated - Drinking enough water can have numerous benefits. Drinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to r...Continue reading

22.01.2022 PLYOMETRICS . Plyometrics are explosive exercises aimed at overloading the musculotendinous complex. The key factor is the rapid nature of the exercise, with often short ground contact time. An example is hopping, where there is more time in the air as opposed to on the ground. Exercises such as squat jumps and box jumps are explosive in nature but there is more of a focus on landing. While they are not true plyometric exercises they are helpful in the Plyometric Progress...ion which enables you to progress to be strong enough to complete true plyometric exercises. How do they help? Plyometrics, if performed correctly, can enhance athletic performance with increases in lower body strength, power, jump height, agility, sprinting capacity and running economy. How do I start plyometric training without getting injured? . There are some general rules with beginning and progressing plyometric training. Its like learning to crawl before you walk. Here are some general guidelines: Two leg exercises before single ie jump before hop Slow before fast Low before high dont go straight into trying to tallest box to jump on! Short before long Quality of movement over quantity aim to have 5 good quality reps, rather than 10 relatively poor reps General before sports specific Periodise dont try to them every day, and think about where you implement them in your program to avoid injury. You dont want to do a heavy back squat and then go into plyometric training. . The Plyometric Continuum There are phases or progressions of plyometrics which assist in training your body specifically to be able to cope with the explosive nature of true plyometrics. . Look out for our next few posts, where we will explore each phase of the plyometric continuum as well as provide examples of which plyometric exercises are most specific to individual sports

21.01.2022 One of Laras clients Mitch showing great progress with his rehabilitation 12 weeks post ACL reconstruction . #Repost @wasportsperformance with @make_repost ACL REHAB Wait... this is rehab?!? Mitch is about 12 weeks post-surgery for his ACL injury he sustained playing touch footy.. ... He got on the front foot with his pre-surgery protocol that his physio at @westcoasthealth_hp prescribed him (thank you!!), followed his post surgery plan to a T, and now he is back at WASP getting those pins strong again... and the upper body which will act as a secondary goal to get swole Too often Ive seen players rely only on rest and body weight/banded exercise to get them back to sport, not realising the immense strength needed to adequately dampen the forces seen in running, jumping and cutting etc. Once the knee is quiet meaning it has full or almost full ROM, minimal knee effusion and no quad lag, we can begin slowly getting the legs as strong as possible.. even more than prior to injury. Under advice from the physio and myself, Mitch can now start to introduce some light landing drills to slowly start bridge the gap to a return in some months time. These drills pretty much mimick the same plyometric progression seen with healthy and youth athletes, only slightly more cautious for the first few weeks. Want to return to play better than before your injury? Reach out for a chat #aclinjury #acl #aclrehab #strength #strengthtraining #strengthandconditioning #perth #perthfitfam #willetton #rugby #touchfootball #wasportsperformance @mickhughes.physio

21.01.2022 The Final Stages of the Plyometric Continuum Stage 3: Jump Integration this stage combines landing and jumping together think a single hurdle jump. These can be made more complex by progressing from double leg to single leg or adding lateral movements. The natural progression is to continuous jumping (stage 4), where the athlete has to jump, land and then produce those forces again and again. Think of the continuous hurdle jump/ hop. Progressions within this stage inv...olve changes of direction, speed and height/ length of jump. Other ways to make it harder is to either jump against resistance (power band), or tolerate change of direction forces mid jump. The final stage is quite aggressive and involves creating and absorbing high loading and power through the joints and tendons. Exercises such as depth jumps and single leg three hop for distance are good examples of this stage. Stages four and five should be sport specific. Theres no point giving a hockey player the same drills/ exercises as a track and field athlete or footballer. It is important to be specific in the needs of the athlete. Well explore this later. . Look out for our post next week, where we will demonstrate how to progress through upper limb plyometric continuum. #agilitytraining #plyometrics #plyometricstraining #strength #exercise #returntosport #power #sportsphysiotherapy #physiotherapy #exerciseismedicine

10.01.2022 The Plyometric Continuum - Phase One: Eccentric Absorption The main goal of this phase is learning to absorb the forces of the body. Its important that your body is able to decelerate. There is no point if you can get faster and stronger but cant slow down. The ability to decelerate plays a pivotal role in the ability to change direction. How much rest should I have between sets?... In the early stages, with low amplitude exercises rest can be limited to 30-60sec between sets. The more complex and powerful the movement than a longer recovery of up to 2-3 minutes between sets. How many times per week should I do plyometrics? In the early stages, when doing low amplitude plyometrics you can do these daily to second daily. However, as you get further along the continuum and the complexity increases, with exercises such as triple hop for distance, than you only want to load the tendons 1-2x per week to reduce the risk of overload and injury.

05.01.2022 #Repost @marika.physio with @make_repost It has been well demonstrated in the research that increase in body weight is a risk factor for urinary incontinence and that reducing body weight (if you are overweight or obese) can help reduce symptoms. But what about those who may technically have a BMI in those categories but actually have a much higher muscle: fat ratio (eg body builders and power lifters?). To date there really hasnt been much research into this.... In the recent study on incontinence in power lifters (see my previous post), there was not a statistically significant difference in incontinence rates between the different weight categories. In other words, those that were in the 84kg+ category did not have more incontinence than the under 57kg category. What does this mean? Who knows. Perhaps it is because of body composition, pelvic floor strength, other measures of health, general activity levels, overall muscle strength... we could guess as to why this is the case. Bottom line is that in the general population there is definitely an increased risk of urinary incontinence with increasing body weight... but perhaps we need to consider more than s persons weight on a scale... #powerlifting #incontinence #leakingwhilelifting #pelvichealth #femaleathlete #resistancetraining #strengthtraining #pelvicfloorexercises
