24.01.2022 Tyson the baby alpaca (cria) suffered a broken jaw in the 1st week of his life. His loving mum, Emma from Farmtastic, brought him straight in for emergency treatment at West Coast Vets. On X-ray, we could see that he had suffered a fracture to his mandible (jaw bone). This would need to be repaired as soon as possible. Dr. Maxwell Hall applied an external orthopaedic fixation device to the jaw to allow it to heal correctly. Two screws were placed either side of the fractur...e site and a solid rod was placed between the screws to hold the jaw in place. He recovered extremely well from his surgery and is now a happy, healthy young alpaca.

20.01.2022 Case Study - Severe Angular Limb Deformity "Absolute Obsession" presented to Dr. Maxwell Hall as a referral for a complex angular limb deformity (bent leg) when she was a weanling. On presentation the limb was bent out (valgus) to the side and there was a bleak prognosis for her future as a sport horse. A combination of screws and wires (internal implants) were used in order to cause the outside growth plate to slow its growth and allow the inside to catch up. Thankfully th...is surgery was successful and this mare competed at the Young Horse Championships 2 weekends ago as a five year old. Due to the owners willingness to go ahead with this procedure, she has allowed this mare to become a competition horse. This is an amazing outcome for a lucky mare.

19.01.2022 Kumari is a 5.5 year old female Rottweiler that had a history of ongoing ear infections with associated chronic irreversible changes to her ear canal. As a result her ear canals were severely scarred, narrowed and some had turned into bone. This was a source of ongoing, frequent painful infections and stress. Her dermatology specialist recommended a TECALBO (total ear canal ablation) for permanent resolution and pain relief. Following surgery at West Coast Veterinary Hospital with Dr Aaron Raney, Kumari is doing very well, pain free and happy.

15.01.2022 Rigbys Wee problem In this weeks case study we will discuss feline urolithiasis and the surgeries available to resolve this painful condition Rigby the 3 year old male cat came to visit us earlier this year with a wee problem. He had been unable to urinate for at least 24 hours and was beginning to feel the pressure.... Dr Ella diagnosed him with with obstructive urinary lithiasis - meaning a bladder stone had become lodged in his penis and he could no longer urinate. This situation starts out with severe discomfort, but if not treated rapidly can lead to electrolyte imbalances, damage to the kidneys, and even death. Plan A: He was unblocked successfully by passing a urinary catheter into his bladder via his penis, but unfortunately re-blocked even more severely a few weeks later despite medications and dietary management. Male and female cats can both suffer from urinary stones, however we usually only see blockages in males because the urethra is much smaller and longer, hence stones are more likely to get stuck. The problem can even get worse over time as strictures begin to form in the penis, making future blockages more likely and more severe. It was time to make some drastic changes... Plan B: Male cats such as Rigby with repeated severe obstructions usually respond well to a surgical procedure called a perineal urethrostomy, where an artificial vagina is created in the perineal region. Normally this is sufficient to create a larger opening for bladder stones to pass through, however in Rigbys case this approach was unsuccessful because of the scar tissue already present. It was time for Plan C... Dr Aaron performed a pre-pubic urethrostomy where an even bigger urethral opening was created in front of his pelvis. This successfully allowed Rigby to urinate freely and comfortably. We are now two months down the track and Rigby is feeling much better. Weeeeee!

12.01.2022 Smegma Beans Smega is a waxy build up of dirt and skin cells that can commonly form into a bean in geldings (and occasionally stallions). The build up forms in the urethral fossa, and can create irritation, swelling to the sheath and in severe cases interference with urine flow. Cleaning of the sheath every 6-12 months will help avoid beans forming plus it will allow you to check your horse for any other common issues in this area including sarcoids, melanomas, squamous cell carcinoma and habronemiasis.

09.01.2022 Dr. Aaron was presented with a very challenging case recently. Nigi presented to West Coast Veterinary hospital with a large amount of fluid swelling under his neck. A diagnosis of a salivary mucocele was made. A salivary mucocele, or sialocele, is a collection of saliva that has leaked from a damaged salivary gland or salivary duct, and has accumulated in the tissues. This is often noted as a fluctuant, painless swelling of the neck or within the oral cavity. The only satisf...actory treatment for a salivary mucocele is removal of the salivary gland or glands that are involved with the mucocele. Nigi underwent surgery and the mucoele was excised. He is now much happier and back home.

04.01.2022 Here is a sneak peak of our next case study. Can anyone guess what animal this might be?

03.01.2022 Dogs will be dogs Leo the 4 month old puppy ate one of his beloved soft toys when his owners werent looking on a Saturday night. They realised very quickly and brought him straight down to West Coast Vets for an urgent after-hours appointment. Toys are a very common cause of intestinal obstructions, but thankfully Dr Josette was able to get Leo to vomit up his toy before it had a chance to get lodged in the intestine. ... Leo was soon back to feeling 100% and nearly surprised us all by attempting to eat his toy again, but we were too quick for him :)

03.01.2022 It's grass seed season Here’s three quick cases that we have seen in the last fortnight. Case One: Biscuit a female Spoodle had ear issues which included head shaking and scratching her ears. ... An otoscopic exam under sedation found 4 grass seeds deep in the horizontal canal of the left ear, perforating the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and 2 grass seeds in the right ear, also perforating the eardrum. These were removed and she was given medication to help recover. Case Two: Ava, a female staffy, presented to West Coast Vets with chronic sneezing. Under sedation we found a grass seed embedded in the wall of her nostril - ouch! Once removed Ava was much more comfortable and sneezing resolved. Case Three: Mellie, a 3 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, X was yelping when opening her mouth. An oral exam under sedation found a grass seed embedded into the back of her pharynx. Thankfully we removed it quickly and she was soon feeling much better. Grass seeds are awful at this time of year and can cause severe discomfort to our furry mates. Always check their coats after being outside.

02.01.2022 Protect against sand colic. Designed to feed to horses exposed to dry or sandy conditions, where an accumulation of sand in the hind gut may have occurred. Horses can graze very close to the ground, and when grazing on sandy soils, or fed in yards/stalls with a sandy floor, they can often inadvertently take in sand. Under most conditions this is not an issue, however under some circumstances due to the sand being heavy, it can accumulate in the hindgut and cause a blockage an...d abdominal pain. The movement of sand through the intestines depends on the rate of passage of the digesta (undigested food). Due to the ongoing drought conditions seen in most of Australia, the risk of sand colic and sand related blockages is increasing, as horses strive to find pasture to eat. SandBuster contains a blend of ingredients each selected because of their unique action on causing increased rate of passage, becoming gelatinous and supporting intestinal mucosa repair. For the month of September receive 20% OFF the 2kg tub of Sand Buster.

01.01.2022 Another great Case Study for all of ewe Dr Ella raced into action last month when this young Mum got into a spot of trouble during her lambing. Most animal babies are positioned in the birth canal with two front legs and their head ready to come out first, however this little one was determined to do things a bit differently. He managed to get himself in the awkward position where he had one leg and his head out, but with no sign of his other front leg! This meant he wa...s getting stuck in the birth canal at his shoulders. With the help of some pain relief and a medication to relax the uterus, the lamb was manipulated into the correct position. Once Dr Ella could grab both front feet she helped Mumma sheep by pulling the little lamb into the world! If you ever notice your pet actively pushing to give birth for 20-30 minutes (or much shorter if it is a horse) with no signs of a baby then please call us straight away to ask for some assistance or advice.
