02.01.2022 Henry Gordon Memorial Bowls’ Day Last Saturday, Club Dubbo staged the 5th Henry Gordon Memorial Bowls’ Day, with a total of 72 bowlers, comprising the Indigenous All Stars and the Flying All Stars, playing 2 ‘test matches’ over the day.... This was the 5th staging of the event, which commemorates and honours a great Club Dubbo bowler. Over many years, Henry Gordon made friends across the state through his bowling feats and his wonderful ability to ‘get on’ with whomever he came into contact. Visiting bowlers came from far and wide, and amongst the clubs represented were Bourke, Coonamble, Orange, Goodooga, Brewarrina, Lightning Ridge, Narromine, Mudgee, Nyngan, Tottenham, Tuncurry, Northmead, Raymond Terrace, Dubbo City, Dubbo Macquarie and West Dubbo. Henry’s family was represented by his wife, Elsie, his 2 children (Dinna & William), his mother, sisters, and grandchildren. In the morning game, the Flying All Stars won 208 to 189 (5 rinks to 3, with one rink drawn). Darryl Bryne had the best rink, with a 34-17 win over Ben Sullivan. The Indigenous All Stars bounced back in the afternoon winning 189 to 175, with the best performed rink from Liam Morrow over Steve Read, 31-12. However, the morning margin proved too costly for the Indigenous team, and they went down in the combined total, 383-378. At the presentation ceremony, Henry’s son, Will, spoke on behalf of the family, thanking all the players and friends for travelling long distances to make the day a great success. Will also thanked the organisers and sponsors for their valued contributions. The major sponsors of the day were Club Dubbo and West Dubbo Diggers. Bowls’ manager, Anthony Brown paid special mention to the Club Dubbo staff (Bar, Bistro & Greenkeepers), for doing a marvellous job in providing their services to the bowlers. The men and lady bowlers also assisted in providing morning tea, running the 100 Club and raffles, as well as general duties around the club and COVID-19 marshalling. Special mention must also go to the team captains, Warren Towney (Indigenous All Stars) and Andrew Reynolds (Flying All Stars), for organising the players and teams, and to Anthony Brown (Club Dubbo bowls’ manager) for his efforts in ensuring the day went off without a hitch. The day was not only about bowls, camaraderie and memories. During the day, everyone involved dug deep to raise near $900 for the local PCYC Lifeline centre.
