25.01.2022 People often ask us how a western dressage horse should move, or the correct outline at the various paces, or how to ride a particular movement. One of our favo...urite resources is a poster set (6 posters) produced by Susan E. Harris. The posters are available on her website (but not sure if they can be sent to us here in Australia): https://www.anatomyinmotion.com/p/western-dressage-set-of-6 Over the coming weeks we will also be reviewing some western dressage books that are easily available from online suppliers.

24.01.2022 Over the next few days we will be introducing the expectations of western dressage tests at each level. Today we are looking at Introductory Level Expectation...s. Introductory Level in western dressage is perfect for young or green horses (and sometimes riders) to show at a level that supports the development of good building blocks and foundations. It is also a good introduction to the sport for those not familiar with gaits, movements or even riding in a dressage arena. These tests are at walk and jog only, and most of the lower level tests in western dressage focus on flow - for example there is no halt at X to salute - we want to encourage a horse to keep moving forward in a relaxed and calm way! The tests focus on straight lines and 20 metre circles with progressive transitions to jog from walk, from jog to walk, and walk to halt. All introductory tests are non-sanctioned (ie., no point scoring) and anyone can ride these - even if not a member by paying a day membership (insurance) fee. Any questions - ask away!

14.01.2022 We get asked a lot about tack and what is allowed and not allowed. The great news is WDAA has basic tack and attire requirements therefore encouraging any rider... and equine partnership to participate in a western dressage test. Here's some notes on tack: Any western bridle made of leather or leather-type material may be used, with or without a cavesson. A snaffle or bosal may be used at any age or any level as long as the rider uses two hands while performing their test. When using a curb bit, the rider may choose to use one or two hands. If a rider chooses to use two hands they may not switch back and forth between one and two hands during the test. Any western saddle may be used to perform your tests unless you are using a tapaderos saddle which is not permitted when performing in a Western Dressage Equitation class. Horns on your western saddle are optional as well. Western breastplates and cruppers may also be used at the rider's discretion. Silver will not count against your overall score. Whips may be no longer than 47 inches including lash. Polo wraps are permitted in the dressage ring but must be as matching to the horse's color as possible. 13.01.2022 Whilst western dressage is a serious discipline in its own right, plenty of people who compete in western dressage also participate in other equestrian discipli...nes. This is a lovely story about a rider and her horse who whilst mostly participate in dressage, have given a number of things a go, including western dressage. What other equestrian sports/disciplines are you and your horse involved in? https://www.chronofhorse.com//winner-of-the-week-whether-b

02.01.2022 A shout out to our hard working national committee (Western Dressage Association of Australia) who provide strong governance and leadership of our sport. The wo...rk they do supports not only our members, but also the work of our state associations, branches and affiliates. The board has established a really clear vision for all of us to aspire to.
