02.01.2022 WATCH OUT FOR DUCKLINGS It's that time of year again! Ducks and ducklings are beginning to leave their nests in search of the nearest wetlands, prompting ...a plea from Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia for motorists and cyclists to be cautious. "Mother ducks often nest in tree hollows and shrubs a considerable distance away from wetlands. Once ducklings have hatched, the families have to walk to their preferred habitat, which can be challenging as it often means crossing busy roads," they said. "It is best not to interfere or try to pick the birds up. This can result in the mother taking off and abandoning the ducklings. "It is also not uncommon to see ducks and their hatchlings in backyard swimming pools. If this occurs, we recommend that people leave gates open if possible and encourage them to leave, without chasing them, so they can find suitable nearby wetlands." Ducks and ducklings will be making the journey from nest to wetlands from now until November. To report injured or orphaned ducklings, contact Parks and Wildlife's wildcare helpline on 9474 9055.
