25.01.2022 Great work by fisheries in Victoria, I wonder if Recfishwest has plans to expand its very popular fishing in the Burbs project to include something like this? Let hope the typical Government red tape in WA dosent cause to many problems. Korg

22.01.2022 I love being on the water and catching a good feed of fish and it never ceases to amaze me of the different things that happen out there. Take yesterday, it was not the nicest day on the water but we caught a good haul, noticed some strange clouds and had a bit of a different capture. The pic of the clouds is attached but the capture needs a bit of explaining. I was slow pitch jigging using one of Alan Koh's 200g contact jigs, I hooked up solidly not far off the bottom, my... crew for the day Morris Wilkinson asked me what I was calling it for? My first thought was for a sambo as it was going pretty hard and had some real wight behind it, but it just didn't feel right. Then as it, or as it turned out them, came to the surface they seemed to float to the surface as a big dhu would. My first look at the colour in the water had me thinking big dhu but moments later when I noticed hue in the water I realised it was a queenie, not just one queenie it was in fact to solid fish. Both with 1 each of the top hooks in there mouths and the lower hook in there belly, trussed up like a couple of cart horses and certainly solving the problem of why they pulled to bloody hard. 15.01.2022 Pink snapper spawning aggregations like this is what we’re continuing to fight to protect in Cockburn Sound from the Outer Harbour development. The Westport Ta...skforce which made the recommendations for the Outer Harbour development completely failed to answer this basic question in its multi-million dollar, three-year process: What impact will a new port in Cockburn Sound have on the Sound’s pink snapper stocks and fishing experiences? So we’re not stopping the fight for the Sound and its habitat which supports the largest spawning aggregations of pink snapper in the West Coast Bioregion. We’re continuing to push Government to address the Taskforce’s shortcomings and make sure Cockburn Sound’s future as a marine habitat and the future of West Coast pink snapper is not put on the line. Thanks to Jamie Vogler, of The Nomads, for sending us the footage and thanks to him and the tens of thousands of you like us who care about Cockburn Sound. 15.01.2022 Field testing of shark deterrent devices has been carried out at various locations this year as part of an RFIF funded Shark Depredation Project to determine th...e effectiveness of three shark deterrent devices in mitigating bite-offs while line fishing. Trials were first conducted at the Abrolhos and Shark Bay, with researchers Dr Peter Coulson and Nick Jarvis then travelling to Exmouth and the Montebello Islands. While at the Montebellos, the team fished over three days in waters between 35 and 55 m deep and encountering sharks at every spot. Underwater video footage from cameras attached to the fishing lines is now being analysed to determine the species and size of sharks, and importantly, their behaviour in response to hooked fish while the different shark deterrents were deployed. The team will visit Broome and Exmouth again early next year, before collating their findings to inform the final stage of the project, a serious of roadshows to engage with recreational fishers on shark depredation at various regional centres throughout the northwest.
