24.01.2022 The Victorian Country Cricket League has selected its Team of the Year for season 2019-20. Eight regional cricket teams of the year were originally forwarded to... the VCCL and all 96 players were considered for inclusion in the VCCL team. The selection process includes the application of criteria based on player performances using statistics from home and away matches of each country cricket associations top grade or division. The team contains two opening batsmen, four top and middle order batsmen, an all-rounder, a wicketkeeper and four bowlers, at least one of whom has to be a spinner. The VCCL team of the year is decided on the basis of total runs and wickets, the best averages and the most wicket-keeping dismissals. All other variables are discounted, VCCL chairman of selectors Rob McIntyre said. This seasons nominations have again seen some outstanding performances in country cricket associations across this State, he said. Quite a number of associations are seeing players with Premier Cricket experience returning to their original clubs which strengthens the quality of cricket in those competitions. The two opening bats in the VCCL team had fantastic seasons. Cam Taylor from Bendigo amassed over 900 runs including three scores above 150 to go with his 31 wickets of leg-spin. This is Cams second selection after being named the spinner in the previous seasons team and has been rewarded with the captaincy, The other opener, Aaron Brunner (Ferntree Gully), hit five centuries including three in the first three matches of the season. He is one of ten players that have been named in the team for the first time. Dale Kerr, the opening bowler from Bellarine Peninsula, is the other player to be selected for the second time after gaining a place in the 2017/18 team. Selection of the four top and middle order batsmen proved to be a difficult exercise with so many outstanding performances with high aggregates or averages, McIntyre said. The VCCL Team of the Year process provides Vic Country selectors an opportunity to recognise the better players across the State when sorting potential Victorian country squad members for the Australian Country Cricket Championships in January. Should COVID-19 restrictions allow, members of the 2019-20 VCCL team will be acknowledged with a plaque and cap presentation at a leagues annual general meeting in late August.

21.01.2022 Worth a read this article on 16 year old Georgia Gall from Euroa. Georgia was recently signed by the Melbourne Stars to play in this years WBBL. Great article and great message for aspiring country cricketers. Snipped of Georgias insights:... I then played for the Euroa under 14 and 16 boys teams, and from there I was selected for a regional team called Northern Rivers which played in the State Championships. I absolutely loved playing with those girls and I think that was where I really started to discover a passion for cricket. A lot of people say that being from the country can be a disadvantage in getting opportunities to play professionally, particularly in Melbourne, Georgia said. I actually think being from the country is an advantage because the opportunity to get discovered is higher, particularly once you get in the pathway programmes. Theres just less competition and you can really stand out"
