18.01.2022 More than 100 Western Heights College students and staff caught up with Magistrate Peter Mellas (Bell Park High School, 1979 year group) last Thursday in our very first live alumni Q&A session. Students were engaged through the hour-long session and inspired to ask plenty of questions about Peter's experiences in court, study choices and tips, and the legal system in general. "I took away the fact that no matter what school we go to, we can excel and make our ambition, goal o...r dream happen! I loved being able to understand more about the law system, and see what it really it like being an ex-student of WHC." - Year 9 student Jesse said. Peter said he enjoyed the session and thought it was a great learning experience for him to beam into our virtual classroom. "My high school education was the stepping stone to further education and where I am now. I’ve always wanted to give back in some way and I thought this would be a good way to do it. Hopefully I was able to address some universal and timeless themes," he said. Our sincere thanks to Peter for generously offering his time and expertise for our students. In this 5min snippet, Peter shares his career pathway and fields a question from a student. Get involved with our alumni program! Email us at [email protected]

15.01.2022 This Anzac Day will be like no other in our history. Western Heights College felt it was really important to continue with our planned Anzac Day Service at today 10.30am. This service will be conducted by our school captains and live streamed via Google Classrooms so that our students, staff and parents can tune in and respectfully acknowledge our returned service men and women and those who have unfortunately died during their service. The first photo is an Anzac banner which is currently on display at Vines Road, thanks to Colleen, our library manager. The second photo shows former school captains Jamie Cooke and Rebecca Tucker paying their respects at a ceremony in 2000. Lest we forget.

10.01.2022 A career in science can lead to opportunities to travel the world and make a real difference! That was one of the many takeaway messages from our Year 11 Biology class's Live Alumni Q&A with Dr Stuart Minchin (WHC Class of 1988). Stuart moved to New Caledonia this year to head up Pacific-Community-SPC, a large organisation which looks after science and technology for development on behalf of the Pacific nations. Stuart's first job after school was shovelling lead in a factory...! This led him to apply for university and pursue a career in aquatic science. In this video, we've put together a few of Stuart's thoughts about his career progression, what his new role entails, and the importance of "soft" skills like communication and empathy. Many other topics were covered in the session, including ecology, climate change and challenges facing the Pacific nations. Our thanks go to Stuart for making time in his busy day to talk to our students! #nationalscienceweek #careersinscience #alumnipride
