25.01.2022 Dried Apple Snacks These are the perfect snack for kids! You can experiment with the thickness of the apple; thicker slices will have a soft texture like store bought dried apple, thinner cuts will curl up at the edges and have a crunchier texture. ... I have left the seeds in as it looks pretty (and I could not be bothered! ) but you can always use an apple corer or small knife to remove the core. Ingredients: Apples (red works better as they are sweeter) Cinnamon Lemon juice Method: 1.) Slice apples thinly 2.) Add 1/2 cup of lemon juice to 1 cup of water. Soak apple pieces in liquid for a few minutes then remove and pat dry with paper towel. (the lemon juice helps stop browning) 3.) Place on baking tray and sprinkle with cinnamon 4.) Cook at 85C for approx 2 hours. 5.) Remove and cool.

22.01.2022 But how do we know when kids need help with communication? :... You may recognise speech delay when a child shows with speech sound errors that impact on speech clarity, making it difficult for others to understand them : You may recognise a language delay when a child has difficulty understanding what has been said or doesnt have the words (vocabulary) to communicate their needs, wants or feelings. ? By 3 years of age, a childs spontaneous speech should be at least 50% intelligible to unfamiliar adults. By 4 years of age, a childs spontaneous speech should be intelligible to unfamiliar adults, but may still with small differences & errors () It is important to bear in mind that there is considerable individual variation between children. If, as a parent, you are in doubt about your own childs speech sound development or speech clarity, an assessment by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) will quickly tell you if your child is on track and making the right combination of correct sounds and errors for their age See more

21.01.2022 - ? If you have a preschooler (3-6years) chances are they may sit with their legs in a W position (like the picture above) If you google W sitting, or look at any blogs about it, you will be super worried about your child sitting in this position. However the evidence contradicts most of these statements - check out our blog (link in bio to read more)... , . . - - . If your child sits in a W and only sits like this, trips and falls often, walks with toes in and has trouble keeping up with their friends on the playground then thats when a #kidsphysio may need to check things out. ? Get off the floor! Reduce floor play, move play onto tables or even better onto a vertical surface. Like Miss E here - shell preferentially sit in a W for floor play and by moving the paper onto the glass siding door not only is she working on arm strength but squatting to get the pencils works on core and legs too! @ Perth, Western Australia https://westernkidshealth.com/w-sitting-why-the-drama/

20.01.2022 /// - ? When physios give you an age that bubs should be doing certain things by, they arent just making up a random number. Most therapists are guided by an amazing tool, a motor scale, that looked at the development of thousands of children, by Piper & Darrah (the AIMS) This is where the numbers in this video come from. ... But what if my bub isnt achieving the skill when 90% of other bubs can? Its important to check in with a Physio, paediatrician or GP. They might need therapy, they might not - but a check over will help make that decision. Sometimes physios might give earlier numbers... like when I say if there are no signs of wanting to move by 7 months its worth checking in, because if they do need therapy, the earlier we get to see them the better! This reel is inspired by @speechwithalextrichilo - she is a master speechie who coined this type of reel make sure you check out her page for all things Speech & language! See more

20.01.2022 Another easy school holiday activity (I mean we all love easy dont we?!) It may be a little bit messy ... Step 1 get out your muffin tray Step 2 grab your food colouring and pop a drop or a mix (depending on what colour you are trying to make) into each muffin area Step 3 pop a couple of teaspoons of bicarb soda on top Step 4 have some vinegar in a cup and give your kiddo a variety of tools; pipette, syringe, spoon to pop the vinegar on top of the bicarb... ! ... as the reaction happens the colour beneath is revealed! For older children you can get them to mix the food colouring drops together to make new colours and see if their guesses or hypothesis are correct Lots of fine motor control, problem solving and motor planning / control going on here! @ Perth, Western Australia See more

19.01.2022 - @__ , ! We used our @shapemags to create a marble track.... Mr 4 used his spatial skills to pick shapes to create a pathway - our mags were a little bit short so he had to figure out a different way to keep the track stable - he layered up the ends to create a slope! There was a lot of to design the track and change it when the marbles became stuck, shape square, triangle and . 18.01.2022 & Leaving the warm safe anti-gravity womb, learning to feed and learning to sleep is a shock for many if not all newborns, but finding themselves doing tummy time flat in the floor like a pancake? Where its super hard to lift my head and look around? Its no wonder many bubs arent a fan straight up of tummy time. Helping your baby develop head control, right from the very start, can help immensely with tummy time! You can help head c...ontrol develop just by picking them up differently. You can start these variations from about 3 weeks old Using your hamburger hands (you know the ones you wrap around that delicious hamburger that are firm enough to hold it in place without crushing that delicate bun ) you can either 1support bub from the shoulders to make their upper body stable or 2go under bubs shoulders (See the video above) If you are worried about your bubs head stick your index fingers put so they can provide support if needed behind bubs ears Miss L is ~4 weeks old here notice how mum chats and keeps eye contact the whole time ? ? 12.01.2022 @_ More tummy time!!! Flat on the floor can be uncomfortable for bubs with reflux and sore tummies, and hard work for long stints too, in the first few months. ... Heres another version that incorporates support, incline and built in activity!!! The dip between your shins means less pressure on tums. Heads higher than bottom keeps food down and helps bubs last longer. Your arms along their body length gives lots of support and input to help with balance. Have your bubs elbows over the top of your knees to help prevent "aeroplane wings" and keep them in contact with a surface to bear weight through Hold their bottom firmly into you, stabilising pelvis Automatic face to face contact so you can chat together and play with face expression or mouth sounds Try slowly lowering one leg, and alternate, to add weight shift. Or keep your knees together and slowly lower them from one side to the other a small way, whilst holding you bub on top and watch for balance reactions as they hold their head in the middle (from 3 months) There are so many different ways to try tummy time, variety is super helpful for learning. What have you tried this week?? See more

12.01.2022 & There has been a LOT of discussion in our Physio community here in Perth of late about anterior cruciate ligament (ACL - the one in your knee) injuries in kids who haven’t finished growing yet. So much so, that Nicole, as chair of the WA @physioaustralia Paediatric Committee, got together with the #australianorthopaedicassoication to put on a night of learning & discussion... Michelle one of our awesome senior physios spoke about why kids & teens are different and why you can’t just treat them like an adult ACL. There was also a super panel of both surgeons and physios to discuss controversies in the research and practice. So what was the outcome? Physios, Surgeons and families need to work together to find the best solution for the child. And every child is different, their growth & development, sports, future ambitions, injuries etc... so there isn’t one answer. Also working with a Physio in the first 12 weeks after your child’s injury to improve strength and control helps us make better decisions and improves outcomes long term. This is termed prehab and is important for your child’s physical and psychological wellbeing. Got questions? 08.01.2022 - How do I help my baby learn to roll over? Well most of the time you dont have to, around 6 months, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, just one day theyll be lying there then BAM they roll onto their tummy.... and then probably start to fuss cause they cant get back ... But if you want to, how can you? There are a few different ways and it really depends on your baby. To roll over from back to tummy, usually Bub needs: 1 A reason - something motivating 2 To turn their head and reach their hand across their body to lift their shoulder off the ground 3 To lift their legs up and over 4 To lift their head up and off the floor There are a few different strength components as you can see... Miss C when rolling right, struggles to get the legs up and over and also her head. So this is one way I can help her Her fave rattle, get her to reach over FIX the rattle still- so she can pull on it to help her generate the power to lift her legs over, but Im not pulling her or lifting/moving anything for her (Check the video) If I didnt fix the rattle - she would just take it with her to roll back onto her back. Ill pop another way I do this with an O ball on a ribbon in my stories. Has your baby rolled? When did they first roll? Remember there is no winning in milestones, each baby has their own path and is working on their beautiful foundation skills with beautiful motor patterns. See more

Giving birth then being left in a room without your baby while your partner goes with them to NICU Sleeping on a ward without your baby but with all the other mums and their babies Not getting to hold your baby for hours, days, or even weeks it’s going home with an empty car seat and a gaping hole in your heart it’s waking up every three hours even though your baby isn’t there because you have to pump milk for them it’s asking a nurse permission to touch your baby It’s seeing your baby covered in wires and on a ventilator it’s your heart racing every time the monitor starts beeping it’s wishing you had those monitors when the baby comes home it’s having CPR training before you take your baby home it’s grieving for all the things you missed out on it’s having a very different set of milestone cards about breathing and being able to wear clothes instead of smiling and clapping it’s explaining actual and corrected ages to everyone who asks how old they are it’s worrying for years about weight gain and development it’s wondering what the long term effects will be . 01.01.2022 Repost @nicole_kidsphysio Im going to be honest. They arent great for a babys development. Being restricted from free movement, with soft mouldable skulls, developing bones and muscles learning motor patterns, it isnt ideal. But neither is sitting at an office desk working 8 hours 5 days a week. And its better than a mental breakdown.... . . But shoot me now, Im a paediatric physio and . Ive used many. Only for short times. Ive got a bouncer swing thing at home in my living room right now. If I didnt use a baby container I would go insane. , . I dont have my mum across the road when my baby is in hysterics An Aunty to hold baby while I cook dinner Cousins next door to play with the 4 year old so I can just with the baby, or have a hot cup of . So I have baby containers. And thats ok These are my sort of guidelines, I guess, based on the research I know, that I follow: 1. Short periods (15-20mins) 2. My baby gets lots of free floor play 3. If I have a day with lots of container use I try to prioritise free floor play (sometimes Im doing 2x1 hour to the to drop my husband at work) 4. I dont put her in the sitting containers until she has good balance in supported sitting 5. I dont put her in standing containers, like activity centres, until she can support herself in stand..her feet are flat, take her out if shes leaning 6. I dont use jumpers, because the jury is out on whether they contribute to toe walking, but if I did Id wait until bub was strong enough to take their own weight through their legs, just to protect their growing bones 7. I dont use walkers. They are unsafe and not recommended by @physioaustralia I will never judge a mumma for using them. We are all doing our absolute best, and in these COVID times, things are even harder. Big love See more
