24.01.2022 Planet Ark Tree Planting Day On Brookfield Sunday 28th July MEG participated in Planet Ark Treeplanting Day again this year, planting at our site beside Arnolds... Creek at Brookfield We were both surprised & delighted to have over 60 people arrive for planting. This was one of our biggest events in recent years. About 130 holes had been drilled the day before but it became quickly apparent that a lot more would be required with the unexpected but very welcome numbers constantly arriving. Another 200 or so holes were quickly mattocked by the adult participants. Four Scout troops decided to participate, with leaders, Scouts, Cubs, Joeys & parents, as well as a Venturer & a group from Ballan. Many had spent the night in Bendigo & had just travelled back this morning. 2nd Melton Cubs 2nd Melton Scouts 2nd Melton Joeys 3rd Melton Cubs & Joeys We were also glad to welcome Sue Rogers, (Communications and Engagement Adviser, Customer & Strategy, Melbourne Water). Sue has been liaising with MEG (& other Melton community groups) about Melbourne Water’s ambitious Re-imagining Arnolds Creek Project. Many people also heard about the event on the Planet Ark website & arrived to participate. The beautiful sunny morning probably also played a part in encouraging so Melton Scouting & members of Melton community for their enthusiastic participation. Thanks also to Sue Rogers of Melbourne Water. Peter Sell of Western Land Services (& MEG) arrived with a water tank to water the plants at this year’s site. Many thanks to Peter! Melton Environment Group have been restoring the natural vegetation of Arnolds Creek at Brookfield for some years, restoring the creekside environment. Brookfield is a link in the Arnolds Creek Biolink (creating a wildlife corridor along Arnolds Creek through western Melton). The variety of plant species planted reflects our desire to recreate as much as possible the creekside habitat of Arnolds creek. Take a look at this series of shots, a very healthy red fox about to take a bait, this area is in a very sensitive coastal wetland with a high population of endangered bird life and keeping the Fox numbers under control is vital to the welfare of the Avian population there. These pictures were taken using one of our field cameras which we use to monitor pest animals at the site Western Land Services staff are highly skilled in the use and deployment of field cameras, if you would like to know more please contact us on 97470855 .

19.01.2022 Perennial crops ensure that there are living roots in the soil 100% of the time. This prevents soil erosion, reduces compaction, feeds the soil food web, and pushes the soil profile lower. Further reading: http://proof.nationalgeographic.com//digging-deep-reveals/
