20.01.2022 New episode today! Full circle to Broken Hill: rural generalist GP Dr Joshua Crase returns to his childhood town. https://www.destinationmedicine.com.au//full-circle-to-/17 Realising that he preferred talking to people than to machines, Josh Crase relinquished his first passion for computing and switched to a medical career. The GAMSAT was a big challenge, but he got through first time and has remained true to rural medicine ever since. In fact, Josh has navigated his way through university to a busy career as a rural generalist GP without a single metropolitan placement. And now he’s come full circle, settling down in the town where he grew up Broken Hill.
19.01.2022 Many of our students have talents outside of their passion for medicine - Our very own Amy Thwaites is a poet and her reflections on drought which was so pervasive upon her arrival in Dubbo in late 2019 are captured in a poem aptly titled "The Water" and you will find the link to the complete issue below. Well done Amy!!! it was published in the AMSA Frontier Magazine on page 21 Frontier! Vol 5 Issue II - Rural Problems Rural Solutions... AMSA Rural Health proudly presents Issue 2 of Volume 5 of it's biannual Magazine: Frontier! Rural Problems - Rural Solutions. The year 2020 has shown the world that 'modern problems require modern day solutions', and transmuting that idiom into the rural setting, we have our newest issue of Frontier! 'Rural Problems - Rural Solutions', an issue focusing on the issues that curtail rural health and the uniquely rural solutions required to tackle them. issuu.com https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/46y5C81V0PTDEqNqsn6cIp See more
18.01.2022 The Rural Health Symposium organised by the Rural Health Clubs from University of Sydney, (Mirage), UNSW (RAHMS) and University of Notre Dame (Rounds) was a credit to the organisers with a turn out of close to 90 from across the three universities. The feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive which was thanks to our guest speakers from across Western NSW. Doctors Damien Limberger, Daniel Stewart, Sean Hogan and Uri Harrington along with nurses Michelle Baird, Gabriel...le Arnold and Jessica Milton all provided first hand information on their working life, why they chose Rural and the many advantages of working in a rural/regional area. The student asked some very pertinent questions throughout the day and during the final session which was a "you can't ask that Panel" where questions were texted to two assistants who then in turn asked the questions of the panel. There was a lot of rural myth busting and certainly a lot of interest in working rurally from many participants. The Western NSW Regional Training Hub and the Riverina Training Hub were please to be of assistance and also provided information to many attendees. See more

17.01.2022 Today was a very successful launch of our new Destination Medicine Podcast series. Our thanks to Sarah Clarke the Chair of the Rural Health division of the Australian Medical Student Association. In Sarah's word.."For me these podcasts enhance the wealth of information found on university medical school websites. These podcasts are a personalised, accessible and equitable source of information for rural and regional high school students too. Sarah congratulated the nation...al Regional Training Hubs on adding to the information available to support high school and non-medical students interested in studying medicine, especially where this interest lay in regional and rural study and training. Not every pathway into rural medicine is a straight-forward one and these stories are so candid and encouraging. The practical advice offered in the podcasts is particularly useful during this time, where other face-to-face opportunities to hear about the process of applying to study medicine have had to be restricted. It s amazing the reach that is achievable with a Zoom launch. Please go to your podcast platform or destinationmedicine.com.au and listen to the four of 12 new podcasts from student telling their experiences in applying to study medicine. Their consistent message is if you want to do medicine then you can find a way!!! See more

12.01.2022 Whoever said a rural life would be quieter? Dr Sarah Wenham started her medical career in the city of Manchester in the UK. After qualifying in palliative care, she moved to Blackpool with a catchment area of 330,000 people. Then, to Australia and Broken Hill. The contrast couldn’t have been more extreme. But Sarah has embraced her role as the only specialist palliative care physician in this region of Australia. She’s loving it - listen now to her Destination Medicine podcast "From Blighty to Broken Hill"

10.01.2022 Day Two FRAME Meeting completed - a very useful session this morning regarding Regional Training Hubs and various approaches illustrated by the Hubs from across the Nation. It's a great space to work in with the degree of collaboration and willingness to share concepts and ideas so freely with so many. I presented on behalf of our three Hubs at University of Sydney. David Lyle gave an update from AHREN which is the overarching governance body for University Departments of Rural Health in a similar manner to FRAME which has oversight of the Rural Clinical Schools across the country.
08.01.2022 Thanks to all who attended the Medical Careers workshop instalment one on Saturday. There was some discussion following the workshops and it was acknowledged that the interactions available in a virtual format were somewhat limited, the content and message was still clear. If anyone has any questions, be sure and let me know and the links to the further information session mentioned by Anthony will be sent to you directly by him. keep safe
07.01.2022 Spot the student- several of our students benefited from first hand experience in a disaster situation - plane crash or car crash. A response involving police, RFDS, ambulance, council and many health professionals and volunteers came together out at Dubbo Regional Airport to test their knowledge and disaster management skills in a mock but very real looking plane crash involving fire and car crash requiring use of the "jaws of life" Well done to all

04.01.2022 Just an update on activities in our current COVID-19 environment. As many of you know several planned workshops have either been cancelled or postponed. The Rural Generalist workshops will be offered later in the year and the Mentor/Mentee social events will in all likelihood be cancelled. Please be sure and take advantage of our Mentorloop electronic platform which in this environment supplies an accessible avenue for mentoring discussions. We would ask each of you to be m...indful of a probable increased workload for health professionals in this environment and responses may be delayed. I am sure each one of you has an appreciation of that, with your understanding of the effect of spread of the COVID-19 virus which will be talked about in the decades to come. The Rural Preferential Recruitment (RPR) workshops will go ahead by Zoom and 4th year students have already received a Zoom invite to that session. The Medical Careers workshops which were originally going to be an all day workshop, held both in Dubbo and Orange, have been amended to ensure essential content is covered. These sessions will be offered to the 4th years in the first instance. If there are spots available following invitation and RSVP , it may be open to third years. The following content will be offered at two different times (morning and afternoon) on the 18th April and you may select the time that meets your needs best. The content of the 2 X 2 hour sessions will be the same and includes: Job Research and Preparation CV (resume) Dos and Don’ts Referee selection and addressing selection criteria. This will provide essential background to 4th year students who will be lodging internship applications in May and is a logical follow on from the Rural Preferential Recruitment workshops. If you have any questions, please contact the Hub and we will keep you posted. We are also planning further zoom workshop as the year progresses and will keep in touch. Be sure and look after yourselves and your colleagues
