14.01.2022 Why does my dog need to be on a lead? This is a question Charles Sturt officers get asked a lot. Often dog owners feel the by-laws are unnecessary because thei...r dog is friendly and well trained or small or old or needs to toilet or is a puppy that needs to learn and socialise We’ve heard them all. In fact, we’re sure It’s okay, he’s friendly are words every dog owner has heard on their walks, or perhaps yelled in haste as their own dog approaches another person or dog in the distance. The phrase is usually well intentioned - designed to reduce any worry the other person might feel about being approached by an unknown dog. But it misses one small and incredibly important concept it’s not about your dog at all! For more information on good leash etiquette and how it helps everyone in our community feel safe please see our new Dog Blog article - Why does my dog need to be on a lead? https://www.charlessturt.sa.gov.au//pets-and/dogs/dog-blog
13.01.2022 Can my dog eat that? Are you aware of some of the potential doggy dangers out there? We've compiled a quick list for you below. This list is not complete but th...ese are just a few of the hazards we find people forget about or are not aware of. (1) Grapes, sultanas, and raisins: induce kidney failure in some dogs (2)Macadamia nuts: cause weakness, vomiting, and diarrhoea (3) Avocados: lead to a stomach upset and the pip can also cause an obstruction if ingested (4) Onions, leeks, garlic, and chives: ingestion leads to destruction of red blood cells (5) Chewing gum: contains Xylitol and this can cause weakness and seizures (6) Corn on the cob: the corn might be digested, but the cob may lodge in the small intestine causing a blockage (7) Chocolate: you've probably heard this before, but remember chocolate is toxic to dogs and ingestion of just a small amount can be fatal cooking chocolate and dark chocolate are the most dangerous (8) Rodent bait: can lead to blood clotting problems 3-14 days after ingestion (9) Stockings, undies, socks: are all attractive to dogs and can cause a nasty intestinal obstruction Has your dog ingested something? Phone us for advice.

07.01.2022 Did you know that all public places other than a park / reserve are dog on lead areas within South Australia? Reserves and paths within those reserves howev...er are different and are declared so by way of Council By-laws. It's important to remember when walking along the footpaths that run along our coast that your dog is still required to be on a lead. These spaces are shared by bikes, pedestrians, children and dogs alike so please for the safety of others and your dog ensure your dog is on a lead not exceeding 2m in length. 02.01.2022 Does your dog enjoy playing ball on the beach? We know that most dogs love to chase and at times return the ball, stick or frisbee that their caring owner has... thrown for them. We also know that it can be very hard to concentrate on that ball while also looking ahead for the possible sandcastle, small child, towel or another dog that may be in the way. Apart from possible injury to not only your dog and others it can also cause a bit of annoyance on a crowded beach to other beach goers no matter how small or cute our K9 friend may be. Please remember ball games on the beach do not equal effective control if used with a ball launcher or thrown at vary large distances. Ball games should be limited to off lead times and at short distances when you are confident your dog has practised and mastered recall. Share a picture in the comments of your dog enjoying the beach safely! For more information on dog safety and the importance of effective control and leash laws please see https://www.charlessturt.sa.gov.au//why-does-my-dog-need-t
