25.01.2022 Sometimes LESS is MORE! We all know that we need exercise to keep our muscles, joints and bones healthy . Many of us do not have the time with to fit in multiple sessions of exercise a week as recommended. Previous research does show that the more the better (10-20 sets/ week at 6-20 reps), but these studies trained each body part more than once a week, allowing for recovery. ... A recent study by Barbalho et al (2019) took 40 participants and trained their chest, back and leg muscles for either 5, 10, 15, 20 sets of 6-15 repetitions close to failure. The catch is, each body part was only trained ONCE a week. They found that those in the 5 and 10 set groups did significantly better than the 15 and 20 set groups when they retested strength and size after 6 weeks. So 5 sets may be all you need once a week! Try it out and let us know how you go! ONLINE BOOKINGS: https://www.westernsydneyphysio.com/

11.01.2022 Have you ever had a lay off from an injury and have just started to return to sport? Were you unsure of where to start? Tim Gabbetts research into acute to chronic workload ratios (ACWR) has given us a great starting point! This is the comparison of the amount of exercise youve done previously to the exercise you intend to do now. Staying within 0.8 - 1.3x of this ratio can minimise injury risk. Exceeding this or doing too much, too soon has been shown to increase inju...ries 2-4.5 x in soccer players. Please keep in mind that these numbers only serve as a guide and do not account for other factors for recovery such as sleep, nutrition, age and injury history! Its best to see a health professional before returning to sport Lets have a look at Jo the jogger as an example!

09.01.2022 You are NOT your scan!!! A recent study by the American Medical Association took 321 people, who demonstrated meniscus tears (the main shock absorber of your knee) on imaging and assigned them to surgery or physiotherapy. The patients were excluded if they were experiencing locking or giving way.... The surgery group had arthroscopic partial meniscectomies, where they remove a portion of the cartilage in your knee. The physio group were on a program which involved balance and strengthening exercises twice a week for 8 weeks. Both groups were followed up after 2 years post intervention and showed no significant differences in function. Both improved in terms of pain and activity levels as well. If you are however getting locking and instability, its best to discuss your options with a health professional before starting any exercise program.
