21.01.2022 Whoops as Tak wouldve said " George Donikian here with the late news" Congrats to Charles Kingsford Smith on winning the annual Karl Ohlden Trophy with a plus 6. Thanks to Karl for a fine lunch and to Marg for doing all the prep. See y'all Sunday.
21.01.2022 Arvo Gaters As expected Golf Australia have advised we are likely to remain closed until 26/10. A small glimmer of hope GA have asked govt to clarify how and if golf fits in with stage 3 on 28/9. Stay tuned
20.01.2022 Message from The Prez Hello Members and welcome back to Westgate Golf Club We have done some great upgrades around the course with new tee markers, sand bins, path's and construction of a new 11th tee well under way. A big thanks to Andy and Chris for the good work. The course has enjoyed the break and is looking good and with your help will continue to get better.... With Covid restictions in place that will be with us for some time to come ...hopefully eased in the near future there is some rules we all need to adhere to. All Members and green fee players MUST book a tee time and provide a contact phone number for our required attendance record. Arrive 10 minutes prior to your tee time and report to the shop. only 4 people allowed in the shop at any one time. Only play in pairs. This may relax in November and we can play in 4's. Social distance....1.5 meters. Hire equipment can not be provided for now Buggies included. Leave as soon you can after your game. We are also restricted with the car park being half closed for now. So make way for the next players to attend. We are a Public golf course and rely heavily on green fee players lets make it enjoyable and acessable for everybody. We will keep you updated as restrictions change but for now enjoy your game and stay safe. Neil Joyce President Westgate golf Club
20.01.2022 Maybe it was Tak ?
19.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Congrats again on getting around in good time this morn. We are fully booked dawn to dusk and running on time. Good news we will play 18 holes again next Sunday so get yr names down. We are allowed to process cards for handicap purposes so I ll do them the following Friday. Not too bad today but remember part of lockdown is we must go home straight after our round. It is not BAU.... Not sure if the compulsory face masks applies to golf but lets assume it does. Expect an email from GA tomorrow and will let everyone know. Stay safe
19.01.2022 Evening Gaters Nice post this arvo from VGL sponsor The Golf Clearance Outlet. Thanks folks glad you enjoyed your round.
19.01.2022 Evening Gaters ! Abt 100 x 9 hole rds played today 1/2 of them by members. Great to see everyone back. Restrictions are seriously tough for us we are basically only able to sell rounds of golf and in pairs only. However its only to 2/11 so we ll stick at it. Another reminder you must book ahead, Friday is almost full we expect Thurs Fri, Sat & Sunday to book out. ... Sunday will be 18 hole "social comp" please only arrive 10 mins b4 your round and unfortunately we must move on straight after our round. Huffy will sleep tight tonight after abt 45 holes :-) See more
18.01.2022 Arvo Gaters. We are closed from 6pm tonight. More info on course maintenance and security as it comes to hand. How did today go ?
18.01.2022 Morn Gaters Happy Fathers Day be it a day of celebration or remembrance or both. Havent seen my dear old dad for almost 6 months so today we are going to try that face time thingy Lets hope Dan gives us something else to celebrate later today.... Take care
17.01.2022 Arvo Gaters, A great day for our return to comp and "socialising". Was great to see blokes having a beer together in our prestigious beer garden :-) after 3 very tough months. The copper thieves almost spoilt the day by cutting off our power. Great work by Marg and special thanks to Ivan from the Lakes ( who is the project electrician) for getting us up an running with a generator.... Unfortunately we dont have sufficient power to fire up the computers so no comp results today. I ll take the last 2 weeks cards home tomorrow and process them in the old system Tuesday. After some discussion the Prez and the Skipper have decided no honourboard events this year (exception being we will play the final round of the McLean in a few weeks). Playing conditions are just a tad social at moment with upside down holes, pins in, no rakes in bunkers, no swapping cards etc We will however play the 2020 Club Champs in Feb for the first time in about 20 years. We will play Karls event in December and are looking at one or two other special events as well. Stay tuned. Again welcome back and enjoy your golf! Reposted Gaters apologies to those who acknowledged something stuck in there.
16.01.2022 Arvo Gaters A successful " cardless comp" today in nice winter conditions. Thanks to the great majority who cleared the Reserve promptly complying with lockdown.... You can txt me yr card till Thursday nite I ll process them Friday and hcps will be on board Saturday ...0412706475. I ll post some of the better scores as they come in....I doubt too many shockers will be sent !!!! The Golden Greek at +2 and The Huf at +1 are pretty handy so far. I buggered up the timesheet I ll post correct tee off times mid week. Just a reminder no CASH sales from tomorrow we ve had a weeks grace thats enuff. Stay Safe See more
16.01.2022 Admin best keep busy Gaters the bride is looking for jobs for me to do. I want my Sundays back!!!!! The Huf sank 3 of the longest putts I ve seen today. The first was 90 seconds the 2nd was 100 seconds and the last was 2 minutes. Go Hufster :-)
15.01.2022 Evening Gaters Club legend John "Tak" Matthews popped in today. Doing OK !!!!
15.01.2022 Evening Gaters Tough day today with strong winds and cool conditions. Didn't stop Rees Lewis though who won our first ever December VGL medal with an awesome nett 60 off 7. Great shooting! Runner up was Dan Doyle nett 65 off 15 from the Prez (8) on c/b. A few more restrictions lifted today which was great although nothing specifically for golf. Should get some advice from GA this week on stuff like processing comps, flags, bunkers etc... Would be good to get our miclub set up properly so ShaneO can enter his score on his smartphone hole by hole Haveagoodweek!
15.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Bit weird to drive past Flemington today and see it empty except for the nags! Roses looked almost as good as Karls though :-) The final draft of the new clubhouse has come through and a copy will be in pro shop in morning. Its looks OK but we are just checking some of the dimensions from the concept we saw in February. There wont be major changes we need to get this project cracking but have a squizz and lets know what your think. Handicaps are updated and on boa...rd....sorry Andy !!!!! We are hoping for some further relief with Dans press conference tomorrow. For us its not so much the size of the groups but the "density quotas" so a reduction of the 2 square metre rule will help us in the legendary concrete beer garden. Certainly no masks on the course itself would also be a welcome change. We are also working on a syllabus for the rest of year and hope to make some announcement s tomorrow. There will certainly be an extra social event likely a 4 man ambrose. Haveagoodone and see y'all in the morning. See more
15.01.2022 Apparently golf gets a mention on channel 7 news tonight. Fingers crossed!!!!
14.01.2022 Victoria Opens !!!! We will get some concessions Weds and likely back to "normal" 8/11. Groups of 10 no longer have to be from 2 houses only from Weds. Surely this means groups of 4 will be restored !!!! We will get an advice from GA sometime tomorrow and will post it immediately.... Just remember bookings are still essential and will likely remain so for this summer. Cheers !
14.01.2022 Morn Gaters. Cards are sanitised and processed. Gold medallist was in fact Charles Kingsford Smith with 40 pts....well played ! Silver to The Golden Greek with 37pts and Bronze to Tony Grant on c/b with 36pts. NAGA on 20pts....Sammy TwoCans :-( ... Haveagoodweek !!!!!
13.01.2022 Morn Gaters Good news with the greenkeepers able to obtain work permits to continue maintain the course. So should be top top when we get back. Stay Safe
13.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Understand the Spicer final was a hard fought contest with a 1up result to Eden and Ossie over Glenn and Karl. Congrats to all players. Just back from Cobram home of the annual tour since 2014 and the two courses are in great condition. The impact of the pandemic has forced the closure of the clubhouse and shop with the whole operation consolidating to the Sporting Club down the road. Looks fantastic they've done a great job. Club Champs draw will be available to...morrow arvo. Anyone got details of Gold, Silver, Bronze....and NAGA today ???? See more
13.01.2022 Updated timesheet for Sunday
12.01.2022 Morning Gaters trust you are enjoying a relaxing start to your Cup day. 4 days of " double donuts" be closest to the quaddy most of us will get but should result in some further relaxing of restrictions this Sunday. We will have power restored tomorrow and not a moment too soon. Staff are working by torchlight and the beer fridge is screaming as is the generator. The "final" design of the clubhouse is due in about 7 days and will be posted as soon as we get it. Assuming there are no changes affecting us from the concept Neil, JB and myself saw in Feb we should be able to sign off fairly quickly. Enjoy your day !
12.01.2022 Evening Gaters Weve done ok out of lockdown 2 restrictions. We must play in pairs and leave the property as soon as we finish our game. Comp will go ahead in pairs teeing off 4 to 5 mins apart. No gatherings and the beer garden will be closed.... Please remember to book all your social rounds the weekends will be close to full. Enjoy your game See more
11.01.2022 Morn Gaters Not exactly the news we were hoping for yesterday but trust we all enjoyed the great weather for Fathers day. It seems we may be closed until 26/10 but what will happen now is GA will seek advice from the DHHS as to how the new policies relate to golf. Soon as we get that advice we will share it. Have a good week.
11.01.2022 Rd 1 Club Champs !
11.01.2022 Arvo Gaters on our first golfless Sunday for a few months. Still happy to process any scores from last week. Only got one so far. We are waiting for confirmation that the clubhouse project is proceeding during lockdown. This week work was done to provide temporary power to the shop and shed.... This enables demolition to occur so we will wait and see. Committee (via email) this week decided to purchase a new handicap system. Its the touchscreen version ( as used at the Lakes) which we should have up and running in 6 to 8 weeks. Looking forward to watching ShaneO punch in his hole by hole score :-) For the smart phone folks there will be an optional app where you can enter your score as you go...pretty cool. Good to see Jason Day hang in at the PGA. Could be worth a 5am get up for those with Foxtel. Stay safe
11.01.2022 Arvo Gaters 4 weeks in today hope we are all staying somewhat sane. Not much to report except we are optimistic of resuming shortly after 13/9. Dan not giving too much away at the moment however the figures are promising albeit extremely sad. Course is in good nick and there is good spring rain predicted so should be a cracking season. Some demolition work has commenced on the old buildings. Progress will be slow until the asbestos is removed.... Stay safe See more
11.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Those scores lodged from 26/7 are now processed. No printer access in shop tho so look em up on golflink. See yall Sunday.
10.01.2022 Evening Gaters Confirmation this evening from GA. No mask no play. Let your mates know.
10.01.2022 Arvo Gaters, It would be nice if we support Northcote GC in this issue ( personal choice of course). Apart from helping our fellow golfers Northcote is a very similar suburb to Yarraville/Spotswood and no public courses are immune from this. Cheers G.Ward ... Dear Secretary, As you may be aware the Northcote public Golf Course was opened to the community to use for exercise during the recent lockdown period for covid19. Now that golf is back up and running there is concerted politically motivated push to close the golf course and have the area as open space. Most of those pushing for it are not City of Darebin residents, but seems to have stirred bored activists with something to do. We are hoping that you may help by passing on this email to your members to sign on to our website and/or facebook pages to support keeping the golf course open. Here is the website https://weplaygolfatnorthcote.com/ Please share it with all of your friends, family and neighbours. Please share it on all your social channels. Also, there is an accompanying Facebook page. https://m.facebook.com/weplaygolfatnorthcote Please go across to community tab and like it and ask all of your network to do the same. Really appreciate you help and support Regards Phil Goad Executive Manager P: 0488 598 113
10.01.2022 Took 7 years to get started. Just over 7 days to come down. Full steam ahead !!!!
09.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Tad warm today but some good golf. 3 way countback on 3 up today. Gold: T.Grant Silver: G.Ward ... Bronze: B.Johns. Spicer matchplay: Joyce/S. Stubberfield d Shaw/Sammut 3&1 Cucek/O.Stubberfield d Tewhare/Sullivan 4&3 Graham/C. Brown d Dessmann/Doyle 1up Ogilvie/Ohlden d Nikolovski/Syrkiardis 2&1 Club champs list is up get on it. On a sad note long time staffer Marg Lawerson's mother passed away today. Our thoughts are with Marg tonight. Stay cool.
09.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Another gorgeous winters day at the Gate. Todays gold medallist going back to back is The Huf with 36pts. Silver medal Nick OC Smith with 35pts on c/b from Tony Moore. The ONeill trophy for 2020 goes to Phil Tomal with 100pts from The Huf on 97 and Kouvo and ... JB on 96. Well played gents. NAGA only 2 weeks after his gold medal LaurieBrand on 19pts one behind TwoCans...ouch ! Including comp over 230 players on course this weekend surely a record for winter. Just a reminder we all should know social distancing is strict at the moment so after your round move into the parkland area in groups of 10. If restrictions tighten again on 12/7 we dont want it to effect us. Finally was the natural order of things restored last night ??? ie Richmond, Collingwood & Essendon lost....and Caaarlton won
09.01.2022 Apologies for the false hope folks. Not to be. Until further notice we are closed until 26/10. Stay safe
08.01.2022 Really moving now ! Hope ShaneO wasnt asleep in the public loos !
08.01.2022 Great news Gaters Groups of 4 from Wednesday. Full comp next Sunday.... There will still be some conditions. Masks for example. Social distancing. Probably only 6 or 7 in beer garden. However GA will give us full details tomorrow so stay tuned but " its all happening".
08.01.2022 From that great page The History of the Old Lost Western Suburbs of Melbourne
08.01.2022 Arvo Gaters 2 weeks with no golf, hope we are all staying sane. There was intention to accelerate some more course improvements this month using voluntary members labour. Unfortunately this cannot happen during stage 4 lockdown. Only the contracted groundstaff and the primary directors are able to obtain legitimate work permits. Directors will check the groundstaffs work, security and any other essential task which cant be done offsite.... I am sure we are all aware there are only 4 reasons to leave home during lockdown and visiting your golf club is NOT one of them. I am afraid any member who breaches is seriously risking their membership and Australian handicap. We will get this work done and well get thru this. But for the moment........ Stay safe and.....Stay freaking home.
07.01.2022 Morn Gaters 35mms so far just what the course needed to top off all the good work of the last few months. Greens will not be able to be cut so will be a tad soft, slow and bumpy tomorrow after a weeks heavy use. We can live with that. Please read the signage when you arrive.... Forecast is ok a tad fresh but unlikely to rain. Enjoy the GF See more
07.01.2022 On the way folks ! Either that or Tak dropped in to go to the loo !
07.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Just a heads up on Sunday after info from GA and the VGL. We will play 18 holes of par as booked. No comp or comp fees (Mclean postponed at this point). No VGL events or medals for rest of 2020. No honourboard events until further notice.... There is to be no multiple handling of scorecards however if you wish to have your score entered in golflink for handicap purposes you may email or txt a card copy to the club or handicapper ( 0412706475). Under lockdown members are allowed to travel to their homecourse to play in pairs as legitimate exercise. One your round is finished you must go home. At least we are still playing :-) See more
05.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Congrats to all members who played a round this morn the full field coming in under 5 1/2 hours. Allowing the public access in a timely fashion. Course was in great nick and conditions were pleasant for mid July. In terms of non contact regs cards will be processed for handicap purposes next Friday. Stay Safe
05.01.2022 OK folks its now clear. In order to play golf from Thursday you will need to wear a face mask. There will be no exceptions....stock up now. Stay safe
05.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/spotswoodfc/videos/3563913530300066/ G.A.W.N Onwards and upwards Gaters !
05.01.2022 The ol girl is really ready to come down this time. Thanks to all who lent a hand over the last few months. Took the plaque off this morn....wasnt light I can assure you, made at a local foundry. Anyone want to customise a Gater shower screen
05.01.2022 Evening Gaters Fine days golf today in fine conditions with the course in great nick after the rain. Gold medallist in a 3 way countback Dean Westwick 39pts Silver The Huf... Bronze Tony Grant Good shooting! Spicer Semi's Ossie & Eden d Shooter & Scotty on the 19th Great match Karl & Glenn d Coops & Lee 3&2. ........NAGA Samuel T Cans on 20 pts Club Champs entry's close next Sunday after presos. 04.01.2022 Congrats to much loved member Charlie "Have-a-Chat" Nikolovski on the safe arrival of a grandchild...all the best !
04.01.2022 Evening Gaters A heads up on our updated operating restrictions. No hire buggies please bring your own. ( no buckets or hire clubs either) No practice on 9th green...sorry Huffy... Good news all our members are now able to play ie no postcode restrictions. Again remember to book with only 2 per group even weekdays are almost full. Stay Safe
04.01.2022 Arvo Folks great day at the Gate today in perfect weather. Haven't processed scores yet but Charles Kingsford Smith will be hard to beat with 40 pts. VGL have giving their blessing to clubs to play a November and December medal. Please note there will be no 2020 medal of medallist. Syllabus for remainder of 2020 as follows. 15/11 VGL medal... 22/11 final round McLean trophy. 29/11 4 man ambrose 6/12 VGL medal 13/12 Karls Trophy 20/12 4 club challenge 27/12 Stableford Not much for small golf clubs in today's Covid announcements but will be nice to get outside that "ring of steel". Unfortunately the 2 square metre rule under a roofed area still applies. Hopefully that will be lifted in time for Karls gourmet BBQ on Dec 13. Haveagoodweek !
03.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Bit of early morning rain didn't dampen our enthusiasm for a social ambrose. Some nifty pin placements (courtesy Shooter) and "movable" blue plates (courtesy AB). Winners with nett 49 JB, Coops, Mr Whippet and AB. 25 skins each blokes well played.... A fine days golf at the Gate. Haveagoodweek!
02.01.2022 Arvo Gaters Just a reminder no club push buggys can be issued . Please bring your own and let anyone know who usually uses one. All members will also get a clean bucket. Please keep it for the duration of lockdown. Weather permitting enjoy your round, shoot the lights out then faaaarck off !!!!
02.01.2022 Morn Gaters Some good news amongst all this. Next pennant season we will be part of a re vamped division 1 scratch comp. A 7 team event where all matches of the round are played at the same course with the home club having a bye. At this stage there will be semi finals and a GF. An exciting new era for our boys to be part of.... Stay Safe
01.01.2022 A few more photos courtesy Andy Mc. The 1st is a concept design of the new clubhouse from the cricket/football ground side, I ve seen slides of our side and its just as impressive. The clubs will meet as soon as is allowed, likely in 1st few weeks November to discuss and hopefully approve a FINAL plan.
