24.01.2022 Today’s world is largely a deaf world The frantic paceprevents us from listening attentively to what another person is saying. Halfway through, we interrupt him andcontradict what he has not even finished saying. We must not lose our ability to listen. ~Pope Francis

21.01.2022 When [historian and theologian] Donald Nicholl [1923-1997] was dying of cancer he quoted the words of a Russian poet, that gratitude (if not the highest) is th...e purest form of love, for when you are full of gratitude there is no room for anything elserecrimination or desire for revenge or self-pity. He began to record his gratitude for all those--individuals and communities--who had nurtured him throughout his life, and through his final diary entries two words echo like a heartbeat: gratitude and grace. Michael Mayne’s conclusion in Learning to Dance (2001), 241. May these two words be the cantus firmus of my life: gratitude and grace.
21.01.2022 On the first Sunday of Advent, it’s good to be reminded of the light we can all bring to a dark world. Love, beauty and grace can be expressed and celebrated in... a myriad of ways in our broken world. I’m continually reminded that often the smallest glimpses of light make such a powerful difference! 19.01.2022 Tree MY BROTHER LIKED DIGGING HOLES, and the summer before he died he dug one for an apple tree that I see every day through a window in my office. Thanks to th...e tree, it is the one hole he dug that has not been filled in and forgotten. By the side of an old dirt road in the woods is a big maple tree that is so nearly hollow that three children can get into it together and still have wiggle room. Year after year it puts out a canopy of leaves even so, and a friend of mine once said, "If that tree can keep on doing that in the shape it's in, then there's hope for all of us." So we named it the Hope Tree. Sycamore, willow, catalpa, ashwho knows what their true names are? We know only that they are most beautiful in the fall when they are dying. They are craziest when the wind is blowing. In the snow they are holiest. Maybe what is most precious about them is their silence. Maybe what is most touching about them is the way they reach out to us as we pass. -Originally published in Beyond Words

16.01.2022 "In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning." It was a July morning that began as ordinarily as any other day: Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find that missing sock. Pick up the rogue crayon that rolled unde...Continue reading
15.01.2022 Today is the beginning of Advent. Advent, meaning the coming, is a time when we wait expectantly. Christians began to celebrate it as a season during the fou...rth and fifth centuries. Like Mary, we celebrate the coming of the Christ child, what God has already done. And we wait in expectation of the full coming of God’s reign on earth and for the return of Christ, what God will yet do. But this waiting is not a passive waiting. It is an active waiting. As any expectant mother knows, this waiting also involves preparation, exercise, nutrition, care, prayer, work; and birth involves pain, blood, tears, joy, release, community. It is called labor for a reason. Likewise, we are in a world pregnant with hope, and we live in the expectation of the coming of God’s kingdom on earth. As we wait, we also work, cry, pray, ache; we are the midwives of another world. [For some great Advent resources, check out brilliant project our friends started Advent Conspiracy. It's all about taking Christmas back as a season of compassion rather than consumption: www.adventconspiracy.org] (and thanks for the image Aaron Niequist!)

14.01.2022 Some substantial reasons to be grateful more often.
11.01.2022 She was "lonely as a half carafe of wine." For many, lockdowns have exacerbated feelings of isolation but when you’re lonely, lockdown doesn’t end. This is a moving essay, by the Financial Times’s Claire Bushey. Claire writes beautifully about living alone, and how one’s own choices and circumstances beyond one’s control can easily turn into heart-wrenching loneliness.

01.01.2022 After months of online gatherings during COVID-19 restrictions, we are now (from 29 November 2020) having face to face worship gatherings (Sundays @5.30pm) but with ongoing protocols: sign-in, sanitiser, safe distancing, no handshakes, no singing etc. We hope you can join us.
01.01.2022 with a funny and poignant meditation on the personal gravity of gratitude and why being grateful is one of the most powerful things that any one person can do.
