22.01.2022 We’re always there to help, so our crews know the importance of looking out for each other, ensuring that one another is ‘OK’! If you’ve noticed a change and a...re feeling someone you know or care about isn’t behaving normally, no matter how small, trust your gut instinct and act on it and ask R U OK? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, start a conversation and show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask. So today, ask someone in your ‘crew’ if they are OK! A conversation could change a life. 16.01.2022 IMPORTANT NOTICE As with all organisations across Australia, the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for the Service. Due to increased public concern, to protect the health of stakeholders at all levels and in response to the Prime Minister and COAGs direction with regard to organised mass gatherings and social distancing, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service - Inverell Support Group wish to advise that there will be no Support Group meetings within the next two month...s. This is a position that will be reviewed every 2 weeks. Whilst it is disappointing to lose this face to face interaction with our peers in our support of the Rescue Helicopter, the safety and well-being of everyone is paramount and the Service has decided this is the best course of action. The Service is very conscious of the huge efforts undertaken by our Group however the safety of all members of the Rescue Helicopter family and the wider community takes priority. Please stay safe and observe all the recommended health initiatives being promoted to combat this virus so as to ensure the wellbeing of your family and loved ones. See more

15.01.2022 Wishing you a veryMerry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year Thank you to our community for keeping us flying

15.01.2022 If you are heading to the Inverell Show this weekend, make sure you pop by and see the friendly volunteers from the Inverell Support Group who are selling raffle tickets! How good do these prizes look?

14.01.2022 Wed like to wish everyone a happy and safe #Easter break, at the same time, reinforce the importance of #stayinghome unless you need to attend work, exercise o...r seek medical care. Staying home will help save lives but whatever you are doing, PLEASE do it safely. In recent weeks weve attended a number of incidents around homes and properties, such as roof falls, burns, as well as falls from horses and motorbikes. If you are required to undertake #essentialtravel the roads in our local area are very familiar to us but this familiarity can often lead to complacency, so please #drivesafely and be mindful of other road users if you have to be on the road this weekend and remember that #DoubleDemerits are in force. Across the weekend however, you can rest assured knowing our Westpac #RescueHelicopter crews will be on standby 24-7, as normal, to provide prompt aeromedical assistance to those most in need, wherever that may be. Happy Easter everyone! #StayHome #StaySafe #HereWithYou

11.01.2022 What a great looking group of volunteers! We will be down at Big W again on the 21st of December

11.01.2022 Many people within our community have used the Helicopter service. One of these people being Maggie Thomas. Maggie is generously giving her time to raise funds for the service, we are extremely grateful for her support. The Inverell Support Group being unable to fundraise due to COVID, so we are thankful that the funds that Maggie raises will go straight back to the chopper. 6 years ago I went through the toughest journey of my life and without the help of the Westpac Re...scue Helicopter, the life I live today may not be possible. I cannot express enough how thankful I am for this service for saving my life and the thousands of other lives they have saved. The fact that I was isolated where I lived and restricted with critical medical care means that without the services of WRH our stories may have ended a little differently. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has put out a call to communities across Northern NSW to ‘Rise For Rescue’ and help raise valuable funds for the Service as it heads into what is its busiest period of the year. Rise For Rescue is a FREE virtual fundraising event for the Service asks participants to rise to their own personal challenge with a minimum of 30 minutes for 30 days in November at sunriseor when they rise up. Walk, run, ride a bike, horse, tractor, swim, surf, paddle, skate, scoot, push a wheelchair, flow with yoga, pilates, or meditate, sing, dance or mix it up. An event for all ages and all abilities. Participants can join as an individual or team - teams can be family, friends, work colleagues, sporting group or school friends. Prizes are on offer for fundraisers of every level sponsored by Garmin, with weekly prizes on offer for the best Rise For Rescue images, which the Service anticipates will include some spectacular sunrises from across Northern NSW. 02.01.2022 Maggie Thomas, Armidale NSW Rise For Rescue Ambassador - Rescue Story Maggie Thomas was just 16 years of age when she and her dad Andrew met the crew of the Wes...tpac Rescue Helicopter Service. That flight changed my life in so many ways, she said. Maggie was fit and active and a keen participant in triathlon events, but had been unwell for a few weeks while studying year 10 at Holy Trinity Inverell. I just didn’t feel myself and we went to the hospital a number of times. Each time I returned home feeling a bit better only to feel worse again a little while after. My stomach became really hard and extended so we went to the hospital in Armidale, she said. Maggie had contracted a rare combination of two viruses that caused the inflammation around the pocket of her heart, causing myocarditis and pericarditis. Doctors at Armidale Hospital did a number of scans and x-rays and discovered that she had about three litres in fluid around her heart which was also causing her other organs to move in her chest and abdomen and start to fail. The decision was made to fly Maggie to specialist care for immediate surgery. I was in a bit of shock because it didn’t occur to me that I was that sick. I remember looking at dad and I could see he was trying to keep it cool. They said that I would be flown and that my family could join me later in Newcastle. A few minutes later, the doctors came back and told us that Dad could be with me. It was such a relief to know I wasn’t going to be alone, Maggie said. I shouldn’t have worried. The people on board were so beautiful. They talked to us all the way trying to take our minds off my situation and positioned me so I could see out of the helicopter. I had been in a helicopter joy flight but this was so different, she said. That was the first of two aeromedical flights for the 16 year old. Maggie’s heart was operating at just three percent of its capacity. After initial surgery, she was then flown to cardiac care at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for an additional seven surgeries and was on life support for about 15 days. In total, she spent three months in specialist hospital care before she returned home and completed her year 10 studies. Maggie is now 21 and living and studying a Bachelor of Performance and Dramatic Arts at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney. She has recently completed a season of a dramatic interpretation of the Australian movie Picnic at Hanging Rock and eagerly preparing for audition season. I am so grateful for every moment of my life and I am very aware that without the opportunity to be flown by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter that my future might be very different than it is, she said. Being able to access the care I needed so quickly was the key and for my dad to be there with me was so special. We are so grateful for the support and kindness of the pilot, crew, paramedic and doctor on board that day, she said. Maggie has slight nerve damage down one leg after having to learn to walk again. I am back running and I never complain about walking to and from classes or work. I have a new appreciation for just about everything in my life, Maggie said. Donate to Maggie's page or join Maggie's team from this link https://events.rescuehelicopter.com.au//ma/rise-for-rescue
