24.01.2022 The Shed in Mt Druitt, is a drop in centre for people at risk of suicide, originally a space for Aboriginal men in distress, now open to anyone who comes. It is based on the research on the social determinants of health, more specifically, the determinants of distress and suicide; the Shed links people to the services of which they are most in need. This #MensHealthWeek let us all "work Together" to prevent male suicides in Australia.

17.01.2022 In addition to talking, there must be an effort to acknowledge that behind the suicide ideation could be unemployment, family issues, such as separations from children. We tend to quickly label anybody who approaches us in this context as being mentally ill and label them as depressed and understandably, we medicate them." - Says Emeritus Prof. John Macdonald in the "Suicide: Predicting The Unpredictable" article by Medical Forum. 07.01.2022 MHIRC has always been an advocate of the social determinants of people’s health, arguing for a balance to be struck between attendance at medical services and environments which support health and well-being. MHIRC has drawn attention to the national tragedy of suicide as affecting the whole population and notably that 1 in 3 deaths by suicide are of men. MHIRC, along with partners in Men's Health calls for a shift in approach to suicide prevention in Australia. The new "situational approach" focusing on situational distress, rather than mental illness is principally informed by and responds to risk factors of a broad spectrum of difficult human experiences across the life span. Visit MHIRC's suicide prevention website for more information: https://www.westernsydney.edu.au//mens_/suicide_prevention
