17.01.2022 ONDIT FOCUS FARM UPDATE - Part One Dale and Karen are enjoying a good season at their Ondit property. Whilst the quality is going out of the pasture, there is still plenty of feed in the paddocks. As is usual for this time of year, production is starting to drop, though still tracking above the long-term average. All cows and young stock are looking very well following the good spring.... After extensive research, and discussion with the Support Group, heat/health collars have been ordered and will be fitted to the herd in February prior to calving commencing. Whilst in-calf rates are not an issue, taking pressure of Dale’s already busy schedule, animal health monitoring and lifestyle benefits have led to this decision. An automated drafting gate will also be installed to work in with the collars to further reduce the manual labour load in the dairy. Here is a snapshot of what is happening on-farm right now. Look out for a second update focusing on irrigation and summer crops later this week. Milking herd Pregnancy test results have been excellent. The six-week in-calf rate stands at 74%, with 87% in-calf overall All cows were AI’d with Friesian semen. Friesian and Angus bulls were then used to mop up Average daily production is 18.5l or 1.45kgMS per cow Current fat test of 4.2% and protein of 3.51% Barley is being fed at 6kg/cow/day When to start feeding silage will be reviewed over the next two weeks Cows will start to be dried off in 7-8 weeks, it will be staggered to allow an eight-week break before due date. All cows will receive dry cow therapy at dry off Heifers Pregnancy test results for the heifers show 89% are in-calf, with 35 or 43% due to sexed semen Jersey bulls ran with the heifers following AI Expect to start feeding them silage around Christmas/early New Year, depending on when the grass runs out They will be lead-fed barley for three weeks before calving They will receive a 7in1 vaccination booster, probably a multimin and possibly a drench in the coming weeks Calves The calves are due to be weighed soon. They are looking much better than last years They are currently receiving about 1kg of grain per calf per day They will receive Piliguard for pink eye and a 7in1 vaccination soon, they've just been drenched, but will probably have another dose in the next month or so The calves will go on to irrigated pasture, but may get some silage top up too during summer Hay/silage Silage has been completed with 1,800 rolls made this year, up from 1,200 last year There are also 200 rolls carried over Feed testing is carried out on the silage six weeks after baling There is still some hay to bale, it’s expected about 250 rolls will be made this year In addition, approximately 300 rolls have been carried over from last year The farm received 20mm of rain over the weekend

13.01.2022 Like much of the region, silage making at the Macarthur Focus Farm has been delayed by recent rain. Despite being about two weeks later than normal grass quality is holding up quite well and quantity certainly won't be an issue - inoculant is also being used. A total of 230ha will go into the pit now, with a further 70ha, where ground conditions are currently still too wet, to be either chopped or made into bales later. Generally very few bales are made on the farm. Ideally g...rass is tedded about six hours after being cut and then in the pit 24-36 hours after that - of course rain has affected proceedings this year. Following silage some paddocks will be sown with summer crops once conditions allow. Most will return to the milking/grazing platform - a second cut may be attempted on some of the ground, dependant on how the season progresses. The silage will be fed to the 750 strong milking herd and young stock. Despite the poor ground conditions, damage caused by heavy machinery has not been as bad as expected, the contractors have done a good job. Back at the dairy afternoon milking continued as normal........

10.01.2022 Dairy farmer Mel Ackerley completed the Sustainable Dairies program last year. Mel farms with husband Paul on their Larpent property where they currently milk 185 cows on just over 300 acres. Extension Officer Libby Swayn and Regional Landcare Facilitator Karen O’Keefe from Corangamite CMA caught up with Mel on-farm to hear what Mel gained from taking part in the program. I’d highly recommend the course to other farmers. It makes you sit down and think about how you’re using... fertiliser and managing nutrients on your farm. Like many farmers, fertiliser is a huge cost to our business and there is a wasted opportunity if you aren’t fully utilising it. I learned about the true value of fertiliser, the different types that are available to use and about the nutrients that are already on-farm in the form of effluent. As well as the soil tests we received free effluent tests so we could sample both effluent ponds. We already valued that resource, but the course taught me more about the use of the second pond. A big benefit of attending the program was being able to hear from other farmers about the problems they have experienced and how they overcame them. Chatting to and learning from your peers is always so valuable to help improve your own business, said Mel. Karen believes the course offers a great opportunity to farmers in the region. There’s a range of benefits to farmers from taking part. The program looks at a variety of topics including soil health and how you can use available nutrient to match your soil’s needs. Farmers will learn more about biodiversity on their farm. Five free soil tests and two free effluent tests are included. These results are then used to create a nutrient map for each participating farm, Karen said. The Sustainable Dairies program is a joint initiative between WestVic Dairy, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and Agriculture Victoria. The next program starts on Tuesday 8th December, 11.00am 12.00pm. To register click https://bit.ly/34aJohe or contact Libby on 0459 612 681 or [email protected]

09.01.2022 Our Extension Officer Libby Swayn and husband Rod run a Holstein stud, Jordney Park at their Nalangil property. This weekend was particularly busy, summer crops were drilled and urea spread before the heavy rain on Sunday afternoon. As well as all the field work, joining of the spring calved cows commenced six days ago and the monthly herd test took place on Saturday. The pictures below tell the story. The first two drone pictures show the same shot six weeks apart, the heavy... rain and flooding experienced back on October 10th certainly helped set up a great season. Here’s a snapshot of the weekend’s activities: Summer crops Pasja mix was direct drilled into silage stubble at a rate of 6kg/ha This is the third paddock to be sown with Pasja, the two other paddocks were sown two weeks ago and have emerged This is an opportunistic sowing due to the good season pasture silage was taken off this paddock on Friday All summer crops are direct drilled to help retain soil moisture Pasture Urea is being spread after grazing at a rate of 50kg/ha Exact timing varies due to weather forecast, with hot days avoided to minimise volatilisation Applications of urea will continue whilst moisture levels remain conducive to growing grass Most pasture remains of decent quality with only some paddocks that have been too wet to mow going to head The flats contain fescue which is now growing well, and the ryegrass continues to hold on Cows The herd is 50:50 autumn/spring calving Cow activity collars were fitted five weeks ago The spring calved cows are now being joined using this technology 27 from 62 cows have been submitted in the first six days Rod does all the AI and is using data from the collars to more accurately decide when to inseminate Joining is carried out AM and PM depending on the best time window identified by the collars Cows are currently averaging 28 litres per day off grazed grass and 6.5kg of pellets, with a SCC of 58,000.

09.01.2022 Watch our Extension Officer Debbie Twiss discuss tomorrow's new program 'Friday Focus on Fertility'. 08.01.2022 Our Regional Extension Officer Michelle Muir has taken some time off to bale silage at her dairy farm near Simpson. There's been limited opportunities to get it done, with the ground too wet through October and not many breaks in the weather to get the grass wilted. However, a few warm days and some wind to dry the paddocks out has seen tractors going day and night throughout the district as the season quickly changed. Michelle is looking forward to tomorrow’s rain to wash in the fertiliser that was applied today - and have a reason to get out of the tractor for a couple of days!
